Yard Sale 5 was one for the books! This unique event, which happens once a year, brings in riders from all around the world and has the sickest System 2.0 setup you can find. This year, they even added a basketball hoop, which is unheard of! People were bonking the backboard and even dunking balls mid air! Check out the fun below, along with a mini interview of the Yard Sale 5 champion, Gavin Stuckey!
WW: Name?
GS: Gavin Stuckey
WW: Age?
GS: 17
WW: How was YS5 in your own words?
GS: It was refreshing following a summer full of contests. Concrete curbs, bowling balls, basketball hoops, candy canes...you name it, it was there! In my opinion, it consisted of a backyard BBQ feel, which called for a fun fest. No nerves, no jitters, just solely a 2.0 jam session with your boys.
WW: What made this year stand out to you compared to last year’s Yard Sale?
GS: Would have to say my placement! I’ve always enjoyed the event, but the feeling when standing on top of the podium is like no other.
WW: What was your favorite feature this year?
GS: I would be lying if I didn’t say the basketball hoop. Always wanted to hit a massive kicker to wall ride, so being able to fill the box while doing it in true VWC fashion was all time!
WW: Who was your favorite rider to watch?
GS: All the boys killed it throughout the event. However, it was a treat to watch Dary Znebel tear it up on his home turf. His grass lines and creeper hits got me hyped!
WW: Did you think you’d take the top spot in the end?
GS: On a course like that, you never know what could happen! The short ride time between rails and limited practice made it a challenge to build a run. Needing 10 rail hits, the concept of making them flow together during my finals run was a goal achieved itself. I was stoked with that, the W was a cherry on top.
WW: What are your plans for the rest of the off-season?
GS: Haven’t thought too far ahead. Just been going in the moment. Of course, this downtime lets me work quite a bit on schooling, but I’ve been riding some more on the boat and surfing as much as possible.
WW: What are your plans for the next season?
GS: In 2024, Europe travel for summer while winding down the contest season in the States. Spending time over there has played a crucial role in improving my riding as a whole as well as opening new relationships! Safe to say I’m looking forward to it again!
WW: We see your bother got his pro model for 2024. When are we going to see you get yours?
GS: Fingers crossed for the near future!
WW: How is it competing against your brother in the comps and how do you guys push each other to keep one-upping one another?
GS: It’s special. He pushes me and I push him. This relationship gives us both drive and something to work towards. Don’t ever want there to be a trick only one of us can do. Competition has its pros and cons. This drive has definitely helped our riding reach new limits, putting us on many podiums. Yet when we catch a heat against each other, it’s unfortunate.
WW: Sponsors?
GS: Follow, Ronix
WW: Special thanks to anyone?
GS: Thanks Wes and the crew at VWC for the event! Also want to thank everyone who’s helped me get to where I’m at today.
