It is time to get rid of the first generation Rebel I am using. These are the 2 bodys I am looking at and was hoping for input.

I was in the same boat as you, just sold my Digital Rebel XT a couple weeks back. In my research, I learned that the two cameras are very similar in nearly every way, and that I couldn't go wrong with either one.

A used 40d should be at least $250 cheaper than a used 50d (about $400-500 cheaper than a new 50d), and the reviews in general seem to favor the 40d. In continuous shooting, the 40d is slightly faster at 6.5 frames per second. Many reviewers of the 50d have expressed concern that it shows a lot of noise at higher ISO due to the 50d's 15mp sensor (please take this for what its worth, as it's only what I've read on many different reviews and photo sites, I don't have any personal experience with this claim).

The price difference, fast continuous shooting of the 40d, and concerns about noise in the 50d made it an easy decision for me -- I bought a mint-condition used 40d.

Very happy with my decision, though I've only taken about 200 photos with my 40d.

Good luck!

Thanks Cal. I will be buying new. It is a company expense item of course. From what I have found the 50d is about 200 more then the 40d Not a lot but was wondering if the features were worth the money.

Plus 1 vote for the 40D Ben, I love mine. Give Rich Dykman a call, he has shot with both. Peter Twelker likes his 40 more then his 1D, better colors.

Between those two I'd go with the 40D as well. There will be used 40's flooding the market now that the 7D is shipping.

I went with the 50D and think the newer processor and the much better LCD display (3.0" - 920,000 dots) made it worth it. Also, I have seen loads of indoor high school football games shot at ISO 3200 with a 50D and there is NOT much noise. I think it is very good at ISO 1600 and even higher.

I like the 50D. I don't use live view but its live view has auto focus and face detection and the 40D does not.

Im in the same position. Does anyone know if the lens from a Digital Rebel will fit theses cameras? I have the early model digital rebel (6 megapixel).

I just sold my Rebel XT and picked up a pristine 40D. The price difference for basically the same camera couldnt' be justified for me. Like Cal, I've only shot about 200 pics on it. I found mine at a local camera shop and although it is technically used, it still have the 1 year warranty.

Matt- all lenses off the Rebel with fit the 40D or 50D
