If you swamp your boat with water ballast it's just like swamping it with no ballast and your boat still floats. If you swamp your boat with 2000# of lead your boat goes down. Just keep the rope attached and hope the water's not deeper than 80 feet.
I know it won't happen but I thought you should consider the info. It also makes trailering a bit tougher.

I have Pop Products. It is not lead. It is steel pellets, 40# per bag. They are great, easy to grab and move with the handles. The problem is that Lead is more dense, so 2000# of lead takes up a little bit less space than 2000# of steel. It shouldnt be too big of a deal. I melted my own lead, about 400#, cost me $60 for everything. Its just time consuming. Good Luck.

That is true except you can squeeze pop bags into all kinds of places on your boat that lead won't fit.

My solution?

Add the total weight of the pop bags, and people you have in your boat, make sure that is within the rated capacity. Any additional ballast comes from water.

Hey Ruppert, since you have experience with melting lead down. I'm curious if you could melt the lead, and pour it into a thin cookie pan (or similar), with the result being thin sheets of lead. Then take the thin sheets of lead and form them to the contoured floor, under the seats. For example, in the bow of my boat, the space under the seats is contoured. . . .seems to me that you could really maximize space that way. Just a thought.

Check your local gun shop. See if they have some lead shot...or recycled lead shot. I got mine for about $1/lb. From there you'll need to seal it and bag it.

2000lbs of lead shot will cost you tho! That's a crazy amount of lead.
