Now that it's getting colder and the season is winding down for us non Florida riders, here is a winter time project to help you get ready for next year. Lead bars are about a buck a pound, you can make your own for pennys. Hit up your local tire shops during the winter and score all the old tire weights you can get (most will give them to you for free) buy some rubber maid containers about $2.50 each and fill them up with the tire lead. I make mine about 50 pounds each so you can statch them under seats or where ever. They can be moved around easy for surfing or to balance out the wake too. I'm running about 500 pounds over stock balast for about $20.00.

70 pounds of sand also costs 2.69 per 70 pound bag if you are just leaving it in the boat.....if you plan on moving it around much ducktape the hell out of it first.

i picked up 4 lead bars from work...(free) each is 3feet long 4 inches wide and 4 inches deep. im guessing each weighs 150 lbs

i am going to cut them in half and coat them in rubber this winter

Mike, I run 300 LBS of sand bags also, but i found the lead boxes take up about a third of the space and are easy to move around.

I bet you could go to a swap meet or a pawn shop and buy an old weight set. I have roughly 300# in my trunk. Old weight set and two pvc tubes full of sand that weigh 80# each. I total 1540# with the stock ballast(700#). If I run more than that it gets a little sluggish outta the hole. I'm gonna reprop this summer.

I actually bit the bullet this year and spent 200 dollars on 200 pounds of lead shot, in 25 pound bags that we move around quite easily. REI, around 20 bucks per bag.

I've begun collecting empty two gallon plastic city litter jugs and filling them up with sand. Opened or damaged 50 lb bags cost 50 cents at Lowes. The jugs make the sand more manageable.

In High School (when i was dumb) i melted my tire weights in a fish fryer. But other then Tubber ware gas cans works well. The plastic does not break down. Also the the 85lbs fatsac blocks works well to fill with sand

I went to supply store and bought construction sand bags. no sand, just bags. then all you need is a bunch of sand or dirt or whatever. they don't leak unless you move them around a lot. bigger than lead, but pretty cheap. 1000 pounds for $20 and a little work.

wrap them in ducktape a lot to help prevent leaking.
