Hi all,
Im from New Zealand so we're right in the middle of our season now. Problem is i spent the end of last season unable to board as i tore my inner ankle ligaments. According to my doctor these are nice and unusual and take 3 to 6 months to heal.
First ride of the reason i managed to do it again, so i havent been riding really (i tried once and it was horrible) since November. Anyway ive now had steriod injections in my foot so am ready to go again.
Question was, does anyone reccomend a very supportive boot to perhaps stop this happening again. I have dodgy ankles and wear a brace on each one, however think it may be the boots causing the issue.
I ride 08 CWB Answers with a PS3 board. Im very intermediate.
Would love to hear some reccomendations. I was thinking about the new hyperlites, but they are pretty expensive down here.
Cheers

Agreed with English. I rock the Cells and if my ankels are feeling super nasty (rode with a severe sprain for a month last year) you can always put a brace on then put them on. Absolutely love mine.

Hyperlite Mareks are also very supportive but have a narrow foot bed IMO.

English is spot on, and DC as well. Ronix Cells are extremely supportive and fit like your favorite sneaker around your foot. Complete foot-boot contact all the way up.

have any of you guys ridden with a pair of Ones also, I have a set of 09 Ones and was wondering if anyone thought the cells were better in comparison?

Watson's have a lot of ankle support as well. They're one of LF's stiffest bindings.

Shaun, the 09 Ones were product of the year in 2009 for good reason. The Cells are almost identical in construction, but as mentioned earlier, stiffer in the ankle than the Ones. Only "better" if you are looking for a stiffer boot.
I have the 09 Cells and I am very pleased.

hands down the 2011 watsons are the best, I have very weak ankles and roll them very easily. Well I use to......... before my watsons

Byron, is it flexion of the foot (like when you do a deep knee bend) that is painful or when you twist your foot or try to rotate it?

Hi Vision,
The first injury happened when i overotated a 180 and had my foot slip half way out of the bindings on impact. That was seriously painfull and i thought id broken my ankle. The second time was when i mucked up a 360 and hit the water underrotated. This was a case of me just trying the trick when i should have bailed on it earlier. When i compress to do tricks and land i get the pain, however inner ankle ligaments are a weird one and normally i can walk fine, yet one knee bends much further than the other.
I love the CWB boots because they are so easy to get into, however would definitley consider something that locks my ankles down a bit more.
Cheers

I've tried both the Watson's and the cells in the search for good stiff ankle supportive bindings. The Watsons don't even come close to the Cells.
Get the Cells and get your ankles happy!

I haven't rode them but from my experience snowboarding I can say that i bet the new Hyperlite "System" would be the most supportive thing out there. This is almost the same thing as snowboarding boots and bindings, which are way more supportive than any wakeboard boots i have rode.

I agree with Nick and Jon, the LF Watsons are very supportive. I haven't ridden the ronix cells so I can't comment on them.

The sovens are super stiff with two ankle support straps. The 2010 and 2011 ones come with the air chassis which will soften landings a little bit. Strap those puppies down and your ankle wont move

The reason I asked is that many stiffer boots have less forward and side flex, but will not do anything to change the ability of your foot to rotate. I have the same problem from years of soccer. If I miss a 3, it can be excruciating due to the torsional force on my foot. If it hurts to flex your foot or try a poke, then a stiff boot will help. But when it hurts on rotation, such as landing while rotating, I do not believe a stiffer boot helps.
It is hard to stop rotational forces. Like others have stated, for me, a well padded boot that fits like glove from top to bottom gives me the least pain. Let me know what you end up riding and how they work for you.
