You can get The Grinch from www.distortionboarding.com or there are tons of threads about how to build on yourself. If you do it yourself you only end up saving a few hundred plus you have a ton of headaches if you don't do it right. Check out The Grinch, they just used it for the Pier Fest Winch Contest in FL.

Definitely check out the Grinch like nuckledragger said. If money is no object, get the Hive at www.neverride.com I believe. Theres also the Blackbox from Hypoxic. And a newer one called the Pulldozer (can only be found on myspace i think for now) I'm looking at the Grinch myself.

I'd say you can save yourself a lot of $$$, by building your own. Matthew Melvin has built his own, and only spent about $300. I'm building my own, and have only spent $500... Mainly because I decided to go with a larger engine (13hp). The only other thing I need to buy is a few bolts, and I'm done. Do yourself a favor, see what it'd take to build one yourself. If you have access to a welder, cutting torch, grinder, and other basic tools, you should be able to build one pretty easily, and pretty cheap. -Blake

The Hive is very cool, but it is $10,000. That is NOT a typo. If you are mechanically inclined and rather handy, I'd say yes, build your own. If you're like me you may just rather purchase one.

http://winchskating.com has info on winches. Buy or build, it's your call but I believe people tend to get more out of building their own. Takes more time, less money, and you know what exactly is going on.

Mine was that cheap because I already had ALL the steel and 99% of the hardware sitting around. If you have nothing to start with and have to buy things like drill bits and grinding wheels if will cost a bit more. I had access to a metal shop which made a huge difference. I might build another winch if someone wants to make an offer on mine

Matthew, I can already see it... "Melvinator Winches." To everyone else, I forgot to mention that I'm still short an axle shaft... So add what ever that's going to cost me, to my orginal total of $500. Still a lot cheaper than buying one, and it's been a pretty fun project. $10,000! Holy crap! Who can afford to spend that kind of money on a winch? -Blake (Message edited by blake_hughes on April 24, 2006)

There is a picture of my winch in another post. I have a 600 ft rope and it will pull you about 20 mph.

I always figured you could buy an old 50cc minibike and replace the back tire with a spool of rope.

I'm not sure a 50 would reel in a rider... But, I guess you could change the sprockets, and make it work... You'd better strap it down good! -Blake (Message edited by blake_hughes on April 25, 2006)
