In March of 2011, Santa Cruz surfer Zoltan Torkos made history in the surfing world as the first person to land a kickflip on a surfboard. He named the trick the "Reimer" Kickflip in honor of his best friend, Carl Reimer, who told Zoltan before passing that if anyone could do the kickflip on a surfboard it would be him.
Zoltan was determined to pull the trick off for Carl, and that drive kept him up at all hours of the night planning, plotting and picturing himself landing the trick. Countless broken boards, a busted nose and many injuries later, Zoltan persevered. When most people would have thrown in the towel, he had a reason to land the kickflip sooner than later -- $10k was on the line and being awarded to the first person to land it. But even more importantly, he aimed at making Carl Reimer proud.
Zoltan went on to recently land the first wakesurfing kickflip as well (see video below). Now he has his sights set even higher.
Arun Frances recently sat down with Zoltan to talk about surfing, kickflips and his latest obsession: Wakesurfing!
