Troy Gentry of Country Duo Montgomery Gentry

Share

Troy GentryIf you're even the slightest bit into country music, you're probably familiar with something from Montgomery Gentry's extensive catalog. Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry have been teaming up for over 15 years and have become one of country music's most recognizable duos with songs like "Hell Yeah," "Lucky Man" and, my personal favorite, "Something to be Proud of." These guys have sold millions of albums, charted five number one singles, gathered up plenty of awards and were just inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.

Troy Gentry recently took an interest in wakesurfing and is now on his second Malibu boat, a 2015 Wakesetter 23 LSV. Although he's based in Nashville, he recently made a trip out west to Las Vegas. We took the opportunity to team up with Boulder Boats to make Troy feel right at home by putting him behind a 2015 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV on the glassy waters of Lake Las Vegas.

Between sets we had a chance to talk to Troy about wakesurfing, country music and the new Montgomery Gentry album, Folks Like Us, due out June 9.

WW: How long have you been wakesurfing?
TG: I’ve been wakesurfing for about four years now.

Troy GentryWW: How does the family enjoy their time on the water?
TG: My family loves being out on the water. It is definitely one activity that we can all agree on! My daughter Kaylee, and even my wife Angie, does a little wakesurfing now.

WW: Tell us about your new Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV.
TG: My new Wakesetter is awesome. Besides the newly updated touch screens, the Surf Gate is the best addition ever! No more filling and emptying bags from one side of the boat to the other to accommodate left- and right-footed surfers. Now thanks to the touch of a button you can go back and forth without taking time to move bags around.

WW: Where do you usually go boating?
TG: We're out at Percy Priest. My weekend starts on Monday, so we go to the lake Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and I can be out on the water in 30 minutes. There's a few people out there, but it's not busy like the weekends. Jeff (MG's tour manager) and I have kind of a deal where he keeps the boat stored up over at his house and I make a phone call and he usually preps it and has it on the water by the time I get there.

WW: And then he wipes it all down afterwards?
TG: He does actually (laughs)! The trade off is that he gets to use it when he wants to.
Jeff: I have a buddy with a boat lift and he brags about how he can just hit a button and his boat is on the lake. Of course, Troy says, "I do too. It's called speed dial!" (laughs)

Troy GentryWW: How is your wakeboarding coming along?
TG: Since I discovered wakesurfing I really haven’t been back on a wakeboard. I’m getting too old to hit the water that hard anymore!

WW: Montgomery Gentry a show coming up here in San Diego. At the last country concert I went to at that venue my wife climbed on stage and ended meeting the performer. What do you do if a fan sneaks up on stage?
TG: I usually don't do anything.

WW: Does it make a difference if it's a male or a female?
TG: No. One of our best stage performances is what a guy did on the Fourth of July in Alabama. A guy came up on stage and did a figure eight and went to dive into the crowd. The floor was solid concrete with folding chairs. He came down from about eight feet up and floated like a duck into the folding chairs and they took him out on a stretcher. We thought he was dead for a minute. He was lifeless for a bit.

WW: Did you keep playing?
TG: Yeah, we kept playing. We stopped for a minute. The crowd parted like the Red Sea. They rolled him out and he gave a thumbs up and we finished up the show. But normally if people jump up on stage we don't do anything. It's cool. Someone usually pulls them off before we have a chance to do anything. We usually don't haveTroy Gentry that many people do it, but Eddie encourages it sometimes and that can be kind of a mess because you end up with 15 or 20 people on stage.

WW: What's your most requested live song?
TG: That would probably be a tossup between “Hell Yeah” and “My Town.”

WW: Montgomery Gentry covered Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive. Give us a country song and a non-country song (bonus points if it's 80's metal) that you'd like to cover some day.
TG: There are all kinds of 80’s rock songs that I would like to cover, but being able to sing it is a different story! I love bands like Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Van Halen, AC/CD…need I go on? As far as country songs go, we covered most of those bands in the early days when we were playing in clubs.

Troy GentryWW: Do you perform at local clubs just for fun?
TG: We'll go out to town to have dinner or late night for cocktails and there are a couple of places where I know the bar owners and bands that are playing there and I'll get up and sit in with them. And I've got a couple other buddies that play around town and I'll get invited to come out and sit in with them and play. Yeah, I'll get out and play! (laughs)

WW: You've got a new album, Folks Like Us, coming out this month. Can you tell us about it?
TG: The new album, Folks Like Us, lyrically, it’s the same strong type of lyrics about family, faith, our American pride, salute to our soldiers and the hard-working Americans that make up the great US of A!!! But we also never leave out the party on the weekend!

Michael Knox produced the album and I think did a great job staying true to the Montgomery Gentry sound, which includes a lot of the twin electric guitars. He brings new and fresh energy to our sound and style that our fans have always loved.

Be sure to check out Montgomery Gentry's new album, Folks Like Us,
on iTunes or wherever good country music is sold!
