Collegiate Nationals/Alt Games

Share

Collegiate Wakeboard Championships/Alt Games14 Colleges from around the nation made their way out to Oklahoma City this weekend to compete in the Alt Games Collegiate Wakeboarding Nationals. Schools from Central Washington University to University of Miami, from Arizona State to Virginia Tech were battling to claim the national title. The divisions consisted of Men's A, B, C, D Women's A, B and Wakeskate. Each team was allowed to have one rider in each division. The best rider rides A, next best in B and so on.

Collegiate Wakeboard Championships/Alt GamesThe tournament had a hectic beginning on Thursday, May 31st at the Oklahoma River with high winds and was halted shortly after the local health department concluded there was too much bacteria in the water for the competitors' safety. Since the competition had to be cut short on day one, Wake Zone Cable Park graciously gave all the riders free cable passes to go shred cable the rest of the day.

On Friday, day two, the competition was moved to a beautiful lake at the Guthrie Country Club. The tournament was running smoothly until a thunder storm came in and gave the tournament about a three-hour delay. Luckily, the fast-flowing pace of the tournament got all the scheduled rounds finished to be able to start all of the finals on Saturday.

Collegiate Wakeboard Championships/Alt GamesSaturday was the perfect day for finals. It was a beautiful warm sunny day with the CBS camera crew out ready to film. All of the finals were very competitive and exciting to watch. The wakeskating final was very close between Cole Kraiss from Arizona State and John Zdeblick from University of Wisconsin. Kraiss was going huge on all of his tricks, but Zdeblick ended up taking home first place with his five variations of shove tricks. Kevin Bedson from Florida Gulf Coast rounded out the top three.

Collegiate Wakeboard Championships/Alt GamesIn the Women's A finals, Chelsea Clark from Arizona State and Kalynn Oswalt from Louisiana Monroe had a close battle for second with their big grabs and 180s with Oswalt coming out on top. However, no one was able to keep up with Diana Freenor from Chico State with her huge back roll and almost landed front roll taking the Women's A title with ease.

The Men's A division was throwing down throughout the whole tournament with so many great riders there was no telling who was going to make finals. The finals ended up consisting of Reid Paxton from Oklahoma State, Cameron Steiner from University of Kentucky, Thomas OlsoCollegiate Wakeboard Championships/Alt Gamesn from Central Washington and John Zdeblick from University of Wisconsin. Paxton (4th) and Steiner (3rd) were going huge with great style but had no chance of keeping up with Olson and Zdeblick who had near-perfect runs.

Olson's run consisted of a huge hoochie glide way out in the flats, method scarecrow, method back roll to revert, melan toe 540 to nose grab heel 360. His second pass went even harder with a slob heel 540, tootsie roll, a wrapped KGB and a fall on a crowmobe. He then redeemed himself by landing the crowmobe for his final trick. Zdeblick had to follow Olson's run and it definitely was going to be no walk in the park of him. Zdeblick came out hard showing no fear with a nice clean batwing, a whirlybird, nose grab toe 540, heel 540 and a Tootsie Roll to end his first pass. His second pass started with the always amazing Pete Rose to a roll to blind and then a fall on a toe back 360. He ended hiTeam Winners - Chico States run with a styled out tail grab toe back 180 then stomped a huge heel 7 to claim first place in Men's A.

Chico State took first overall with a great finish from their whole team. They were followed by University of Wisconsin in second and Virginia Tech in third. Coverage will premiere for this event on CBS sports on Wednesday July 11th at 9pm Eastern Time.

The Alt Games Collegiate Wakeboarding Nationals was brought to you by CBS Sports Network, Jack in the Box, USA Wakeboard, Epic Wake Boats, Wake Zone Cable Park, Gevo and WakeWorld.
