There are two things that tell me the season is coming to an end; Surf Expo and the results of the WakeWorld Riders Choice Awards presented by CWB Board Co. Since Surf Expo is where we present the Riders Choice trophies to the winners, you'll get a taste of both below. 2014 Was an amazing year for our 14th annual ballot counting procedure. You, the riders, got more involved than ever before and we thank you for your participation!
We've counted up the votes, determined the winners that you chose and have already put some shiny glass trophies in the hands of those winners. Before we tell you all about the riders and products that won in each category, let's talk about all the prizes we handed out to the voters (that's you).
As if having the privilege to have your voice heard wasn't enough, we also gave each of our voters a chance to win some great prizes from CWB Board Co. and several other sponsors. Check your email inbox to see if you've won one of the following...
• CWB Wakeboard of choice
• CWB Bindings of choice
• CWB Wakesurf Board of choice
• CWB Life Vest of choice
• CWB Handle and Mainline of choice
• 5 Pairs of Kicker Cush headphones
• 5 Pairs of Nectar sunglasses
• 10 Cases of Rockstar Energy Drink
So what do the results look like for 2014? Some things changed and some things stayed the same. Be sure to click on each category to see who took top honors and who got close, but no cigar.
The Top Male Wakeboarders category was unchanged in the top spot, but the #2 spot went to a rider that has never before appeared anywhere in the Riders Choice Awards; Brad Smeele. If you don't already know, Brad suffered a spinal cord injury earlier this summer and has been paralyzed from the neck down ever since. Brad is an amazing rider, so not only is his #2 position a great tribute, but it's also well-deserved. The rest of the top 10 is a reshuffling of last year's results other than the ouster of Shaun Murray in favor of Steel Lafferty.
In the Top Female Wakeboarders category, the top two spots have flip-flopped yet again with Amber Wing dropping to #2 and Dallas Friday jumping to the #1 spot. Our lone newcomer to the top five is Meagan Ethell, who got in at the expense of Emily Durham.
In one of our new categories for 2014, Top Wakesurfers, we get our first chance to honor the top wakesurfers in the world. Keenan Flegel took home the inaugural trophy in this category.
When it comes to the Top Wakeskaters, Reed Hansen continues to dominate the category with his fourth win in a row. Spots #2 through #4 remain the same as 2013, but spot #5 brings a past winner back into the fold.
Our two most excited winners have to be Tony Iacconi, who picked up the trophy with Rookie of the Year etched on it, and Shota Tezuka, who finished as a Top Male Wakeboarder AND was dubbed the Most Improved Rider.
The only rider that was mentioned in three categories for 2014 (four if you count his pro model wakeskate) is Daniel Grant. He has a spot as a Top Male Wakeboarder, Top Wakeskater and got the trophy for Rail Rider of the Year. However, Daniel relinquished his Cable Rider of the Year from 2013 and Tom Fooshee has taken over that award.
Now let's move on from riders to products. This year's Wakeboard of the Year remains in the hands of the most popular name in the Riders Choice Awards with the Liquid Force Harley grabbing the honor for the fourth year in a row. However, the Binding of the Year slipped out of Harley's hands as the Ronix One returned to the top of the heap.
The Wakeskate of the Year category had a change at the top with the Obscura Tao pushing the Ronix Boomstick down to the second spot. As they did last year, CWB Board Co. made its first appearance at the top of the podium in our Wakesurf Board of the Year category. However, for 2014 it's the CWB Benz that gets the top spot, displacing the CWB Razr.
Rounding out the equipment categories, we award Ronix Camber with the Innovation of the Year.
We've got two video categories and, unlike last year, there is a winner in both of them. It was great to see a comeback for full-length videos to populate our Video of the Year category with The Debut dominating the category. Although Breddas has captured the last two wins in the Web Video of the Year category, this year they made way for Mathias Kogel's Black Dog to top the category.
This year we've broken our Boat of the Year category into two separate categories focused on Wakeboarding and Wakesurfing. However, whether you're looking at the Wakeboarding Boat of the Year or the Wakesurfing Boat of the Year, the winner is the same since the Super Air Nautique G23 won both categories. Malibu didn't do so bad either since they cleaned up three of the four runner-up positions in these categories.
