Split Air AC/Systems

Hey I was wondering if any of you had any info regarding Split Air systems. Our house in Redwoodcity was built in 1962 and we would at max need to cool 3 rooms, Our house never had AC and I have never felt we needed it. But this year we had a week or so that it was pretty un comfortable. We have just always delt with the 10-15 or so days every summer that it's real warm. But I was thinking I want to update my HVAC system. Right now I just have central heat. I think the advantages a split system offers would be the same with Heet as well as with the AC that we don't need to heet or cool the entire house just the rooms we are using.

What brands can you recommend

I have a Mitsubishi. Long story short, I bought a new home a couple of years ago and the builder put a Perfect Aire brand split in the bonus room. I had nothing but two years of problems out of that brand. Since it was under warranty and the amount of problems I had, the company that serviced it finally just decided to switch out my Perfect Aire for the Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi has a 5 year warranty and from what I was told by the heating/air company that installed it, they don't have near the service calls they have on other brands. Fujitsu is another good brand.

Whatever you choose, make sure it has a warranty.

Wake thanks for the reply good advice. My friend has the Fujitsu system. He bought 5 systems threw out his house and he payed 12k with install for all 5 systems. This was 5 years ago

I have maybe 5 or 6 of the mini splits...I put them in apartments (2 and 3 bedroom units). They are much superior to a wall or window unit in cooling and more efficient. I also have a Mitsubishi we pulled from a construction office trailer. Use it for a bonus room, stabbin cabin out at the Colorado river and has been awesome for about 10 years. Only had to add Freon one time otherwise perfect. My A/C guy says to stay away from the cheaper Chinese units. Once I put one of these in the apartments (in Riverside, inland empire=hot 6 months of the year) my tenants are happy and the units that don't have them are asking for one. I think it you will dig it.

Grant - Why would not ask me? I am a Mitsubishi Approved contractor. I have installed all brands and I agree that Mitsubishi is the best out of the group. Daikin is actually the largest manufacture in the world for these systems but we have not had very good success with them.

Also the ductless systems are VERY efficient, VERY quiet, but expensive.

Why not Putin a new forced air system? The ductless splits aren't very attractive on the wall. Attic space or crawl space available?

If you already have forced air add a coil and condenser. Ductless splits are good for certain applications but probably not yours if you have forced air.

Yes I spoke to Jason and I will just be replacing and upgrading my forced Air system. Jason brought up a good point that. If your house had nothing at all a Split system is a easy way to have Heet & AC right away. But if you have a existing system with ducting then just replacing the old system and adding a AC unit will be the cheapest fastest way to get it going. Jason We decided that a we want to mount the condenser on the roof.
