Tonight I went out to check the brake fluid in my actuator because I have been having brake issues lately and will have to get a new axle after blowing a bearing last year. Tonight when I checked the fluid it was basically orange and gunked up big time!!! so basically the brakes are shot. So i guess my options are:
a. Replace the actuator, since I doubt it can be saved and replace the brake lines since I am sure they are cruded up. I also have to give my brakes a good cleaning since they still dirty from the blow out.
b. Swith to electric brakes. This seems to be cheaper since I can get new electric brakes for $70 through work and a new coupler for about $20. An actuator and lines will run about $150.

Just wondering what some opinions may be. My suburban is already wired for electric brakes so I already have the controller mounted in the cab.

Electric brakes and submergence in water don't play well together.

You most likely need a new master cylinder, and flush the lines & wheel cylinders / calipers.

What makes you think your brakes are messed up? If you give us some symptoms, perhaps we can help. Most (not all) brake fluid starts out yellow. It will naturally absorb water over time (this happens is cars too). Eventually, because of the water and heat cycles, the fluid turns orange(ish). It is not a big deal to have fluid that color. I have a track car and I can turn that fluid orange in a couple days at the track. Just flush the fluid. The color should not cause any issues. There are some brake fluids that start that color too. How old is the trailer and what brand is it? Waht is wrong with it?

Sorry for the late reply, but its been a long week with school ending. Well first off, when I brake, there is not much response from the trailer at all, it feels like I am stopping with just my suburban. I honestly have not pulled off the wheels and drums to test them, but that is the next step. The other thing that leads me to think that my actuator may be bad is that when I put a naile into the fluid and poked around, a bunch of black crud scraped off so I would assume that would be a bad thing and would probably be getting into the lines. The trailer is a 97 Escort which they do not make anymore, and I have been tossing around the idea of getting a double axle trailer since this one needs some work. I may end up seeing if I can find a used double axle somewhere and get rid of this one.
