Like Robert said, it's like that in VA as well, however...
Tourists and renters only have to have a two or less minute safety lecture at the renting dock. They're the ones who cause the most problems on our lake, not the people who live here full time or over the summer, but they don't have to have a license.
Plus, the license I got when I was 14 so that I could ride a jetski early is no longer accepted by the state, so I essentially have to pay for another class to be approved. I don't think this is super fair since I've been driving boats since I was 8 years old (under my dad's supervision on days that were not busy on the lake) and know all of the laws and rules regarding driving on a lake. Most of the new class revolves around operating a vessel in intercoastal waters, which I never have and don't plan on ever being in.
Oh, when I was 10 I also sat through a safety class that my parents took on a weekly basis given by the coast guard for 5 weeks. How is it fair that I have to be punished by a law that doesn't even target the most problematic source of violations because of other people's irresponsibility?
