Fuel Pump Failure Poll

I would like to know if you have experienced a fuel pump failure. I own a 2005 MC and it has become apparent to me that fuel pump failures in the last 6 or so years is common (way too common).

So, please list your boat (make, model, and year) and the failure that it had.

Nice poll.. Carter has a design flaw somewhere. When dealers stock 15 $500 fuel pumps on their shelves, there is an issue.

I have owned 2 boats over the past 12 yrs. Never one fuel pump failure. Malibu vlx and a 1999 Supra Launch which I bought new with 500 hours now. Never one fuel pump failure (knock on wood). Maybe there is a design flaw somewhere.

Let me post this with great pain. My fuel pump went out with only 7 hours on my 2007 Malibu Wakesetter VLX.... on Memorial Weekend....

First big voyage ever. I put 5 hours on it before even putting another person in it.

That happened last year. It now has 170 hours on it. (Knock on wood).

That is my whole reason for asking Greg. Tim M. has the correct assumption. Visit tmcowners.com and do a search for fuel pump. You will be amazed. The pump sits in a sort of module with a filter on the end. Unfortunately, when the gas level reaches approximately 1/4 of a tank the pump is completely exposed and no longer being cooled. Not to mention, at this fuel level the pump is unable to pickup any fuel. So, your 40 gallon tank really only has 30 gallons of usable fuel.

It is a design flaw and MC is content to continue to sell the $400+ pump modules (they won't sell just the pumps by themselves). But, even if they did sell just the pumps, the system is still flawed!!!!!

2005 X2 - failed at 400 hours (still under warranty) and was replaced NC. Fuel level was never below 1/4 of a tank.

As you have indicated on TMC, this is a poor design. I can not believe there is not a better way to cool the pump. Perhaps the other systems are still patented? That would seem hard to believe as we are talking about a fuel delivery system 20 years old.

I literally do not run my MC below 1/2 tank. I go two sessions (me and the wife) and then fill it up. I have been through 3 pumps (as listed above) but the last one has lasted about 2 years (after switching to never letting it get below 1/2 tank). No need to play russian roulette....

Get going on those hours, we've got 240... lol

Our pump on our '07 VLX started going but luckily it was at the end of the weekend and I had the dealer get it fixed before we came back out the end of the week.

Not one issue on my '00 SLXI w/ the monsoon...dang good boat but had to go.. :-)

This is good stuff guys. So far I am seeing a 4:1 failure rate for MC. In my book, this is an indication of a design flaw and warrants a fix and a recall.

Sanger ~ (Merc Black Scorpion) 600+ hours, original fuel pump.

We often run it down to almost empty, and the kids have run out of gas a couple of times, with no negative effects. (other than embarrassment)

04 X2 Fuel Pump failed around 415 hours... but then I've run it out at least three times and we surf all the time. The pump CAN be removed AND can be cross referenced to the auto world, BTW. Just find an auto shop that has some free time and save yourself a few hundred dollars.

Installed a electric holley pump and it only lasted 30-40 hours. They sent me a replacement and it didnt even work. I am getting a refund. Going back to a mechanical pump.
