I am considering buying a 2017 Cobalt R3WSS and haven't found much information about it. I have found some on the R5WSS. Is anyone familiar with this boat? I am wondering if it is good for wakesurfing and what kind of wave it creates. I am on a busy lake in WI and have 3 girls with no experience 6,9, and 10. Thank you for your input.

Like most Cobalts it probably beautiful but the majority of the people here are into inboards and v-drives and the Cobalt seems more like a runabout crossover boat . If your on a big lake that gets really rough its probably a decent choice but I dont see or here of any on this forum so Im afraid your feed back could be very limited . Good luck with your decision

Thank you Rick. We were also considering the Mastercradt x30 for that reason. Do you think that the X30 is a good boat for beginner wake surfers? I also looked at the Mastercradt x55 but I haven't heard great things on that one.

I don't have any experience with the Cobalt, but I would bet the x30 hands down wins on the surf wave and wakeboard wake. Cobalt will win in steering in reverse, unless you get the new dock Star option on the MC, and top speed. MC will win in about every other performance category.

Most definitely !! If your really new to surfing and boating I'd highly recommend going with someone experienced a few times . All boats handle different when weighted down for surfing and there is a learning curve just as with anything new .

Thank you Rick. What are your thoughts on the x30 vs x55?

Thank you for your feedback. We are leaning back towards the x30. My daughter thinks the Cobalt looks like an old peoples boat.

Cobalt makes very high quality boats. Odds are that the Cobalt will be faster and ride smoother and drier in rough conditions than most any wake boat. However, if watersports are a big part of your reason for being on the water, nothing beats a purpose-built boat.

w.t.f...... I just looked at the baseMSRP for that model and it's at $125k.......at that price point just get a G23, Supra SE, or Tige RZX, or Centurion Ri257 and be done with it....

I just built one with the common options that tow boats come with and it came out to $155k.....yeah.....get a tow boat..

Hahaha exactly what I was thinking!
For the same budget I would definitely go with a Supra or G23! Maybe a RZX but like he said he's not familiar with surf so Tigé it's a bit more touchy for setting the wave when You never experienced surfing.
Few people get a little bit frustrated about that because it's not a simple touch button and go. But I'm gonna say it, you got to makes choices to have the best surf wave on the market haha. Ether you push a button and deal with the wave it makes. Either you take the time to set it perfectly.

Cobalts make really good luxury boat but not tow boat. They are more for pleasant ride, marinas. Not lake for doing water sports.

Thank you all for your feedback. The Cobalt is way more than I wanted to spend but I was looking at getting it for less than $100k. I can get a 2016 mastercraft x30 for $80k but it has 500 hours on it. It was used for a ski school last summer. I intend on keeping the boat for at least 10 years, so wasn't sure if the 500 hours should be a concern, assuming I put on 100 hours per summer.

80k seems steep for 500 hours. I love our 2016 X30! If you have any questions about it just ask. It is an amazing surf boat from the factory. You can def get something with 1/4 of the hours for not much more, considering a leftover new X30 is easily had under 100k.

Being on a big lake and wanting to surf. The RI series from centurion would be an excellent choice. They sit higher in the water, and have a deep V hull. So you will get an exceptional rough water ride, as well as staying dry inside. You can find a leftover Ri217 sub 100.

Thank you all for your feedback. Was able to go out in the cobalt, x30 and the xt23 yesterday. We have decided on either an x30 or the xt23. What are your thoughts on the differences between these 2 boats?

Where are you from? We often boat Winnebago and Fox River in DePere.

Go talk to Dan at Fort Fremont he is great to work with. They have a couple left over '16 that they are willing to deal on.

We are on Lake Geneva. Does anyone know what the centurion ri237 runs? We aren't too far from a dealer so we are going to check out one of those too.

If you're looking for surfing and rough water ride, I don't know that you'll find a better boat

Since you are new - find a good dealer close to you. A good dealer can make or break your boat ownership.
If I were you, I would check out your local dealers to find a good one and buy the brand of boat he sells.

Centurion ( owned by Nautique now) makes very good surf boats.

Since you seem open to different boats I always recommend Malibu LSV 23. It's the F150 of wake boats and they've sold a millon for good reason. Because they are plentiful, they are more affordable used with lots of choices in colors and options. Can't go very far wrong with one of them.

except the rough water ride on the 23 LSV is brutal
