You can absolutely join your first year as a student.

Most schools have their wakeboard club tied to a waterski/ 3-event team. That way with larger enrollment they can get more funding for equiptment (boat, gas, ropes).

Depending on the school, the size of the club, and the climate, season lengths vary a lot. At UW-Madison this was our first summer pulling practices on a limited schedule due to higher demand from students who stayed in town.

Some schools do their membership dues by semester, annually, monthly, it all depends so contacting the team should be your first step to finding out this information since all teams operations are different.

Tennessee's wakeboard club starts in the fall. We have under grads, grad students, and teachers in the club.

We do a try out around the last week in Aug. for the "team".

The way the collegiate events are setup allows freshmen to make the team, ride in a regional event (usually hosted in September or October), then ride in Nationals which are usually in April, May, or early june.

Members of the club and team get to ride as much as they want. We typically ride 4 times a week. Since our boat is located next to the main campus, that allows us to get out on the water before and after school. It is definitely a great opportunity to not only progressively get better, but to also create some awesome friendships.

I am stoked that the collegiate wakeboard scene is getting larger. Hopefully one day it will progress from being student led organizations to actual athletic programs with paid coaches and ncaa sanctions...I think that is wishful thinking, but who knows.

GVSU in Michigan will have their first event in May. Join up before reporting to school. Most clubs ride during the summer.
