I have been thinking about getting an old Ski Nautique 2001 all summer but things have come up and I haven't had time to go look at many. Now, there are 2 (1983 and 1984) that are within driving distance and are priced pretty well. I'm in Ohio and there aren't too many more weeks of riding, so I am wondering if it would be a good idea to buy a boat at this point of the year or wait until next year. Will there be a big change in price?

you'll certainly get a better deal now, but it might cost you what you save to store it

When buying a specific used boat, if the boat is clean and priced well then there is no better time than the end of the season to strike a deal. If you wait then you run the risk of not finding one to your satisfaction for half the summer and/or the price will be higher.

If it is what you want and the price you want to pay and solid, then go ahead and move on it. I have watched 2001's over the years for the fun of it and it is touch and go about finding a good one that somebody doesn't want an arm and a leg for. They seem to hold up pretty well price wise even in the off season.

Get a wetsuit and ride! You will have butter on all the lakes after this weekend and will have winter to 'customize' it the way you want. Best prices of the year are here.

Ok thanks for the advice. I think there are a couple of boats that I could get for under 5K right now. That being said, I won't have a good idea of what kind of shape they are in until I go see them. They are about 2 hours away from me so I may have to take a drive.

True about winter. It's an important season for a boat owner, with all his DIY projects while the boat is laid up. Your first winter you probably will just be cleaning and sprucing.

After one full summer season, you'll have a project list to consume your winters for the life of the boat. Gad, that sounds discouraging.

I agree if it is the boat you want, it is in good condition, and the price is right pick it up now.

2001's are hard to get in decent shape.People hunt them year round and if you dilly dally too long someone will snatch it out from under you. However most I have looked at where rotted to death so be carefull and cautious.
Check the bolts on the stringer, soft spots, cracks where the floor meets the secondary stringer and check for cracks where the floor meets the side of the boat.

Post up the location of the boats in a new thread. Someone may be closer than you and can go give a look at one or the other and send you pics, details, etc.

FYI:
There are ton's of them up in Angola Indiana, which isn't too far. Midwest CC was there for 30 years and CC's are by far the dominate boat in the area. I will keep my eye out this weekend and will let you know what I see.

I have a clean 89 that I might sell next year?
