Mastercraft X-80 performance Compared to the X-45

Hey everyone,
I currently own an '07 mastercraft x-45 saltwater series and I'm looking to upgrade to either an X-80 or a bigger boat possibly in the 40 foot range. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody knew how the x-80 performs in rough water (like in rough chop in a bay not a lake) compared to the x-45. While I do think that the x-45 is one of the most comfortable and best boats for wakeboarding, when I've taken it in a 3-4 foot chop, it is quite unfomrtable. Waves occasionally go over the front mainly due to the lack of freeboard. Now, based on that, does anyone (possibly who's ridden on both the x-45 and x-80) know if the x-80 performs dramatically better in rough water?

The X80 is kind of cool to have but if I were you I would check out the X35 or X55. They have deeper V's than the 45 and both have higher free board.

Out of curiosity what type of 40' boat are you thinking about?

we used to have an X-80, we bought it because the lake we ride on can be rather rough, especially during the weekends. I can tell you we were severley disappointed, it really didn't ride any better than our X-Star and definatly wasn't the quality of the x-star we had... IMO the X-80 was the worst thing MC ever did

Forget Meridians, they are garbage. If you want a good forty something footer go with an older hatteras or a viking. Much better boat.

I am not sure if I would say Meridians are garbage. They might not be a wave crushing sport fisher but Sport Fisher's leave a lot to be desired for comfort and real cruising. Now if you want a real nice boat for cruising I would choose a Nordlund, Grand Alaskan or Ocean Alexander.

I've seen the 300 in person and it is badass! Quality far exceeding comparables in it's class. Crazy expensive though.

isnt th X80 huge? Theres one by my house and its huge. has two v drive engines and is massive behind a vehicle. I believe it was an x80

I'd say if you want 40 feet of pure luxury, then the A-40 is the way to go.

We've worked on enough Meridians to know they aren't good. Ocean alexander is a great boat though. I have never ridden behind an X80 or X45, have heard they both throw crappy wakes for wakeboarding. I think I would look at the X55 personally but I have no idea how the wake is.

linder you have no idea what your talking about if you say the X45 has a crappy wake. X80 maybe.
I agree the CSX 265 is the best in the lineup for rough water.

Lets re-phrase that:
I think I would look at the X55 personally but I have no idea what I am talking about.

If you still want to wakeboard, keep your x-45. Or upgrade to the 35. But if you are just looking at getting a bigger boat that handles great in rough chop, start looking at deck boats or cruisers. Although the 80 and 265 that has been mentioned are great choices. Haven't heard much on the 55. Can't say it enough- go test drive boats! Not only because you will understand what you want and because its FUN!

I said that I have never ridden behind an X45, but was told by mastercraft riders and dealer reps that the X45 wake was sub-par when compared to other mastercraft wakes, thats all I am saying.

I think either the X55 or the CSX 265 would be great choices.

Thank you everyone for your input thus far. It seems that the x-80 is now out of the question. I've talked to several mastercraft owners and dealers and they too say that the x-80 doesn't handle as well in rough water as the 265 or x 55. Also, the bow on the x-80 is not nearly as comfortable compared to either of those boats. As far as me possibly getting a bigger boat, I was looking at the 40' formula PC, 37 cobalt, and the tiara 39 or 43 sovran. I've been on a meridian and they're not the boat for me..they're essentially a glorified bayliner.
As of now, I may consider getting a boat in the 28-32 foot range that's a bowrider and is somewhat good for wakeboarding. I was thinking of the 302 cobalt and the 310 formula. Does anyone have any experience with either of these boats? Is the wake good or even half decent for wakeboarding?

Meridian is built by Brunswick, no? I was under the impression they are exactly that, a step up from the Bayliner motoryacht series.
Give me a 90's 4588 any day of the week. I always loved the lines of that yacht; even if a Bayliner.

Are you looking at an used Cobalt or a new one? Personal experience with Cobalt is there is no better boat (in that style/arena of boats) out there. In fact (as a side note) MasterCraft had help from Cobalt to hammer out and perfect the pickle fork design/hull on their boats, and both companies set standards in the industry. The wake on the 302 boat will be huge; it will have a different shape to it than an actual wakeboard boat wake, but as long as you clean it up with the right speed, motor trim, and a tower; I really think you won't be disappointed at all. Also, that size boat will take a ton of extra weight if you want to sack it out. Does that model have a dual motor set up or single? Either way, DUO PROP is the way to go! Get Cobalt's wake set up (tower, bimini, and boardracks) or get an aftermarket set up, and get ready to have some fun.

But the all important advice is: DEMO DEMO DEMO (that includes riding behind it also)!!!

My buddy had an 07 272 Cobalt and it actually put out a pretty good wake. I was surprised how good it was. That was with a small crew & no additional weight. I wouldn't expect much out of a 30+' boat for riding but you never know. That 41 PC is a sweet boat, and so is the 36 Cobalt... I have looked at a few 37 SS & PC's, just haven't found the right deal yet. But if you buy either of those make sure you have a buddy with a boat you can ride behind.

What do you think about the Mastercraft 300. There was a write-up in "Motor Boating" magazine and it looks like an awesome boat or as mastercraft calls it, a day yacht. The only thing wrong with the 300 is the price; $400,000 for a 30 ft boat is definitely a little much.

It's a cool looking boat but for $400K you can get a lot more boat. I have seen Formula 400SS's in the low $100's and 36 Cobalts for between $120 - $150. Granted this would be a "new" boat. Does the 300 have a gen-set and AC? What kind of power? I can only assume Diesel V drives...

I would stay away from a new model of this sort. Earlier I posted that Cobalts are the best run abouts but they recently started making yachts and they do have some issues. Call it a learning curve. Just my 2 cents

I would love to see pics of the inside of that 300???

The 300 offers the ammenities of a 40-60ft boat in a 30ft. package.
