Hey Wakeworlders -

I've been out of the loop for quite a while. The site says my last login was October 2013 : )

Our 99xstar / MC205v is over 900 hours and likely going to have 'something' to fix and bring it out of the water every season for the rest of its life. So, it's time to start researching for its replacement.

We have a big new pontoon, so I'm not looking for the family friendly boat. I'm looking for something made in the past 7 years that prioritized a great, firm wake for wakeboarding. I've loved how steep and firm the 99's wake is with about 3000lbs weighted evenly.

We don't need frills, just a great performing wake.

It's not hard for us to find a dealer for the major brands.

I've lost track of innovations in this sport, so any help would be fantastic.

Thanks!

Price range? Lot of options

Would be good to stay under $80k. Open to something pre-owned in the 2-300hr range.

Used axis. Most bang for your buck wake wise.

Which Axis has the best wake? Do any have a steep lip?

Is the G23 leagues better wake-wise? I'm guessing it will be tough to find one in that price range.
What about the MC XT line?

Axis the A24 is a beast. The T23 throws a great wave too.

Natique, will decimate any Malibu, axis wave.
Bang for buck, Centurion Fi, MB Sports, Supreme all throw killer waves & the deep V gives it a better rough water ride.

Not sure if slang has changed, but wondering what you mean by wave. I'm not concerned with the surf wave. Sure, surfing is fun, but I'm more interested in a firm wakeboarding wake.

I'm assuming I can get a better wake with less ballast in a smaller boat than a 24 footer, right?

Shameless plug for my friends boat. He is selling his a24, and I would say the wake is unbelievable. Super rare with the corvette 450, and great shape. He only selling because we have 3 guys in our crew and we don't need all 3 of us having boats, and he gonna build a house.

Since you don’t care about surfing as much, a22, a24 imho hard to beat the wakeboard wake quality per $ value. G23 with 2:1 transmission is going to be out of price range, although a pre 16, ideally a 15 would be great for you and they are under 100.

Awesome feedback. Thank you!

Does anyone know how the a22 and/or 2015 G23's weighted wakes compare to the 1st generation xstar / 205v?

I have a buddy that is a really good rider and has your gen 1 Xstar. We ride on another buddies G23 a lot and there's no way you won't love the G23 wake. It's just a big kicker with a lip at the top. You'll find it very familiar but just three times bigger than what your used too. The good rider landed his first 9 behind the G23 then took many more tries to get it behind his on max out 205V. It's just hard to beat.

That sounds ideal. Anyone know how the a22 compares? I realize it's going to be less $$$, but how does the wake compare?

was in this same dilemma (used g, vs everything else). Ended up going with the A24 (new). I will put my A24 wake against a G any day for the week. Even my friends with Gs say the A24 is the truth. Now im sure this page will get 3 pages long with guys talking about their rear facing cameras and neon lights but you asked about the wakeboard wake. The low hour g you want (2016 or newer for the 2-1 trans) will be the same price as a new a24 or close at least. Long story short don’t believe the hype, the g ain’t the only big wake on tha block.

how does the a22 compare to the a24 with regard to wake shape, size and firmness?

Having a lot of exp behind me on the A24 and currently owning a G21, the A24 does put out a really solid wake. The only issue i have run into is that it requires a LOT of extra weight to get there. Meaning the stock 350 you will find in 90% of them won’t do the trick for you. Out of the box the G wake is really hard to beat. Just something to keep in mind when you are looking. That being said, the A24 can be comparable wake wise to the G. With a s*** ton more weight though. Would hands down wake-wise take an A24 over any of the Malibu series. I feel like they are over looked a fair amount, but the newer Supra models SA, SG etc. all pump out pretty damn good wakes as well which used may be closer to your range.

Used G21. End of story.

do you want to mimic the wake of the old boat, the newer boats are wider beams , not many smaller beam boats out there anymore, while all the newer boats have developed different hulls, you have to really ride behind a few to decide what you like and dislike about it. you have so many options, but the older boats were really wakeboard focused. san, 210, older vlx, lsv, xstars were such great boats of that early 2000's era

The A22 or G21 wont be as good as the A24 or G23 wake wise. But still leaps and bounds better than what you are riding now and being a 22 foot has its perks.

As for as the A24 needing weight i guess that depends on what you call "out of the box". An a24 spec'd with pnp front bag and the oversized 1100 in the rears plus power wedge will absolutely do what a G will do "out of the box". Granted your ski lockers are filled with a sacs and thats something you dont have with the G. In fact my favorite thing about the G is their ballast system.

If you want a steep lip on the wakeboard wake, look at the MCX25. It's like your x star on steroids.

After a quick look, it appears there's about a $15-20k price difference between the a22 and the g21. If the wakeboarding wakes are of similar quality (which is really what I'm seeking), it seems a no-brainer to go with the Axis. Am I thinking about this properly?

Of course, I'll do what I can to get behind the A22 first, but thought I'd get opinions here first.
Old     (dougr)      Join Date: Dec 2009       06-19-2019, 7:49 AM Reply
totally different boats, that do the same thing. make a great wake. the g21 will have a better fit and finish, IMO, and a different balast need. The axis is a malibu, look at a VLX or LSV I would lean towards the BU over the Axis, just to compare equals. The BU will have a nicer interior, better fit and finish. I have been in mani BU's and old and new Axis. not a fan of the Axis, only due to materials, the newer units are much better than the first gen

Thanks, but I'm not really interested in fit and finish. I'm interested in a nice shape and firm wake. We have a big pontoon with great fit and finish for family time. We're simply seeking a wake machine.

Are the wakes between the g21 and a22 both steep and firm? If yes, seems the a22 is the route to go.

Short answer yes if you only care about the hull/wake shape.

Medium answer, if your looking for longevity, solidness, quality of anything, ability to make wake bigger, no sacks all over storage and in boat, there is no comparison. But that will cost you the extra $.

As others have said, go ride them both and decide ideally.

Someone just posted this on teamtalk:

I’m in my second year with our 2015 X25 coming from a 2008 X1. I have many level of riders including my son who 17 and can do many inverts. The X25 seems to have a much steep wake than the X1 which my like but not many others like how steep the wake is. Many of his friend will come with us a couple times a year so average riders.

I’m looking to smooth out the wake a little for the begin so there able to do more tricks as they build their riding skills.

Direct comparison of the x25 to your current boat hull.

A22 will be cheaper, g21 will be more than the x25. A22 will be the "rampiest" wake, the X25 will be the steepest.

I’ve owned a A22 2015 and right after a VLX 22. The pw2 makes all the difference. I wouldn’t go with axis w/out the pw2 which is available only in the newer models. I stayed for months with the new xstar fantastic boat but in terms of wake the G is really unbeatable followed by the MXZ 24 for the ones who like steeper wake. I went with the G and couldn’t be happier - wake wise not talking about fit and finish

Thanks for all the great info!!!

We are narrowing our search between a new MC or a pre-owned XStar (2nd or 3rd gen).

First - Can someone help me out with the right 'new' choice? Our dealer has the following 2019's: XT20, XT21, NXT20 & NXT22. Of these, which has the steepest, firmest wake? Reminder, I'm looking for the best wakeboarding (not surfing) wake of these boats listed. I don't care about bells and whistles at all.

2nd - How would the best of the 2019's listed above compare to some of the previous generation xstars as far as wake is concerned???

This feedback will likely solidify our choice!

Thanks!!!

I rode a 3rd gen Xstar thinking man I going to love this boat. I already loved the looks. I walked away from riding behind it and wouldn't even consider it as my next boat. Not saying it's a bad boat but for the money there are much better wakes out there.

Look for a 2016 Supra SA or newer. The wakeboard wake will blow the doors off all the boats you just listed.

Thanks. I think we're sticking with MC given the long relationship with the dealer. Does anyone know the wakeboard wake differences between the 2019's I listed?

How would the wakeboard wakes compare to a 2nd gen Xstar?

I don't remember if it was the x24 or the xt25 but one of those threw a monster wave that put the G"s to shame.

Wave or wake because he is talking about a wakeboard wake and I don't think any x24 or xt25 is going to put a G to shame with a wakeboard wake.

From what I can gather elsewhere, it appears we would get a better performing wakeboard wake with an X22 or Xstar over the XT or NXT models.

Things have certainly changed since the early 2000's when surfing wasn't so big...

This.....

It’s the first thing I thought of when I read the first post.

OP- you want to look at an X25. It has exactly what you are looking for.

They have gone away from the steeper wakes like your 99. Most anything new is going to have a much bigger wake than your 99, but they will have a longer transition, and less aggressive lip.

In your price range, a 2014-2016 X25 would be what you’d want to look at, I think.
