Greetings to all my fellow Epic 23V owners and welcome to all potential owners!!

This thread has been started for Epic owners to get together and chat about everything that is the 23V. This is the place to express likes/dislikes, to share experiences, to troubleshoot problems, and to shoot the breeze.

I picked up an 09 a few weeks ago and absolutely love it!

Cool. How about adding a photo of it to your profile?

I will do that

Does anyone know how to control an iPod from the stereo and/or the two remotes? I can't seem to figure it out.

You cant control the ipod from the head unit. That is one thing I will either change myself or work with epic to use another system than sony that can have ipod control. I heard from shane at sigmods that alpine offers wireless remotes that display playlists, tracks being played, and next/last song.

I did a little research over lunch and it seems like we can have iPod control with an adapter from Sony. Sony sells it for $50 and it plugs into the back of our units.

One day... one day! I never tried or just seen one but one day, I'll get my own Epic 23V! I don't want to look anything else, it seems to be the ultimate boat! I can wait to read what you have to say about the boat (wake, handling, etc) compare to the others!

Fred, how about now? You can buy my '09 for $47k

Upload

The wake is giant and fairly steep. It makes for a great spinning wake (lots of hang time). The handling is amazing. Fill it full of ballast and people and it just rockets out of the water. No school bus here. The cruise control is rock solid. Love the surf wake. I can't say enough good things about the Epic.

I can't really afford it. I bought it to help Epic promote their boats in Minnesota. The intent was to turn it for a profit, but the economy thought otherwise.

Boys, great thread idea Dont have time now, but I'll chime in later with some things that we have done to/with our epic. We r lovin ours & fits our needs perfectly! More to come...

I'll throw up a picture of mine when I get it cleaned up. Perhaps tomorrow evening. I'm excited to see if the Sony iPod controller actually works. If it does I will be super stoked.

When can I load up the boat with ballast and do some wakeboarding with it? I'm trying to follow the break in procedure to a 'T' since this was a big purchase for me. I currently have 11 hours on it. I believe it says not to exceed 4000 RPM for the first 25 hours and to keep the throttle varied and not below 1500 RPM for extended periods of time. I would like to wakeboard with it though yet this season.

dude I slammed that thing from the start, I did wakesurf only tho so maybe their only worried about wakeboarding rpms.

I may not be an authorative person on wakes as a rider, BUT, I've done some big systems on known boats such as BoneCrusher 2, 3, and 4, the tow boat for 09 Spring Ride as well as other wake machines. While at the 09 Spring ride, I took my son (21) out for a ride on Ben and Carla's Epic (thanks for the set) and although the conditions sucked, you could easily see the enormity(sp) of the wake. Anybody looking for a serious wake machine HAS TOO look at this boat!

Somebody throw up a pic of how the amp setup is in the boats.

Duane, I completely agree. The wake is BIG even without any weight in the boat. It is crazy. I also love the wakeshape plate. You can really tell a huge difference when you adjust it. This boat has a wake for anyone and everyone.

I will snap a picture of the amp setup tonight and post it up.

Nic, I don't know if you've messed with the gains on the amps yet, but you should turn the gains down all the way. Set the sub crossovers at about 90Hz. My gains came from the factory cranked all the way up. That's definitely not what you want.
Old     (_vitty_)      Join Date: Jul 2009       09-10-2009, 8:43 AM Reply
Hey Chad,
Yeah I had seen an earlier post from you referencing that so I had checked them right away. Mine were cranked up all the way as well and it sounded like crap.

As far as Ipod control - Yes, the Sony interface plugs right into the back of the headunit and gives you control from the remotes... however, you cannot control the Ipod from the Ipod while it is plugged in. We chose to put the connector that is on the boats on because we felt that it was easier to control the ipod from the ipod than the cludgy Sony system... however, if you just want to track forward and reverse the Sony hookup is the bomb -- you can keep both on at the same time if you buy the Sony one.

Also another thing we've learned recently -

Apple changed the charging wiring in the iPhone 3G, fourth-generation iPod nano, and second-generation iPod touch, which makes the adapter in the boat not able to charge these models, which defeats half the purpose of it. No worries though - there is an adapter:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS696LL/A

As far as amp settings go - each amp is slightly different and to really optimize the system, you have to tune each boat individually. A good stereo tech should be able to do this in a half hour or so.

I have seen epics with a volvo 8 liter engine and an 8 liter merc engine - which one is preferred? any differences?

How is the gas consumption?
Old     (_vitty_)      Join Date: Jul 2009       09-10-2009, 1:44 PM Reply
They no longer run the Volvo's in them. Everything made in 2009 had the 8.1L Merc engines. These babies have TONS of power and get the boat moving very nicely. Gas consumption is as expected from an 8.1L motor. Plowing along surfing though it uses very little gas as the engine is able to motor along with little effort. I am super pleased with it.

Can anyone confirm to me if they can spin their prop by hand when its sitting on the trailer?
Old     (matt_ostmeyer)      Join Date: Mar 2003       09-10-2009, 2:34 PM Reply
The Volvo and Mercury engines are the same block, same power and performance, but with marinization and computer differences. The reason we switched to Mercury is that the Volvo oil system couldn't handle the quick forward acceleration and would lose oil pressure during hard acceleration. We have retrofitted most of the Volvo boats with a new baffled oil pan and they work great.

We tested the Mercury really hard before making the switch - no oil starvation problems whatsoever. It is a super powerful and durable engine and the Smart Tow cruise system is spot on.

The only thing the Smart Tow lacks, as does Perfect Pass, is holding speed through corners - it just doesn't react quick enough. (We're working on that though) However, you can turn it off and back on on the fly to drive a double up corner by hand.

You can spin the prop by hand on the trailer, but it isn't super easy - there is a fair amount of drag from the strut and shaft seal - but this is normal. You will notice it spinning pretty easily if you put a wrench on it to switch props - keep it from spinning by putting a 2x4 above the prop between a blade tip and the hull.

Hey everyone. Finally, a thread dedicated to the best boat out there. This summer I bought a used '07 Epic and love it. I've rode behind an '08 VTX and an '04 X-Star, and I would not trade them boats if they begged. It has the Volvo in it but was fixed right from the start as it was a team rider's boat. I am the third owner and it shows 190 hours now. The only thing wrong is the speedo quit working when I test drove it, so the Perfect Pass doesn't work either. I changed the paddle wheel with the spare it came with but nothing. One day it worked on and off but not consistent. Any ideas? I want to upgrade to star gazer, but that is next year. Also, I'm going to be winterizing it myself. I know how to flush the engine, add RV antifreeze, and change oil on the engine and tranny. What do you do with the ballasts beside drain them fully? Do you need to do anything with the heater? I'm told its better to store it with a full tank of gas? Is it better to change oils fall or spring? For the tranny, I assume you use ATF? Also, I live in Saskatchewan, so it gets to -40C up here and I'm cold storing the boat at the inlaw's farm under a shelter. Sorry for lots of questions, but they've been building up. Thanks.

Hey Matt,
You said it isn't super easy to spin but it can be spun by hand? Reason I ask is I can't make mine spin by hand to save my life. Could it be because the boat only has 11 hours on it or is it perhaps too tight? I just don't want to be losing power due to it being too tight and thus the engine needs to compensate for it.
Old     (_vitty_)      Join Date: Jul 2009       09-10-2009, 5:37 PM Reply
Hey Fred! Nice to see more owners chiming in! I have the Smart Tow GPS so I don't have the paddle wheel. The engine itself doesn't need to be flushed as it is a close cooling system. The heat exchangers need to be flushed though in a similar manor with antifreeze. If you fully drain the balast they should be fine. They are big enough to where a little water freezing in them won't hurt. Storing it with a full tank of gas mixed with some fuel stabilizer will be just fine. I think the reason behind the full tank is that it is harder for condensation to form inside the tank and thus produce water in your fuel lines(I could be wrong though). As for the tranny ATF fluid is correct. I will be changing my fluids in the fall. I know a lot of places that winterize boats around me also change fluids as part of the process of winterization.

i will offer that if the 07 boat has a heater that is fed with raw water make sure you drain the heater core located at the drivers feet. the later models used the closed loop engine coolant (antifreeze) in the heater core, but if you dont drain the raw water version it can split the core.

Im not a fan of kicker at all but I am waiting for '10's to come out to see whats good with the system. I will post my whole list of things that went wrong or need to be changed. There were a ton! but I still absolutely love the boat. I am supposed to Demo it this weekend to some guy in renton. Hope he likes it!

I hear ya Twitch. I am a HUGE fan of Kicker Amps and the solo baric woofers. I don't think they get much better. I don't like the kicker speakers though and I have big plans to replace them all with Polk components next summer. They do sound really nice though when tweaked correctly. They just can't hold up to Polk though.

Yeah, the sub hits pretty hard, but its mainly spl not sql. My plans are replace all the internals with wetsounds ws-650's, 15in Image dynamics IDQ at drivers feet. 2 or 3 new amps, not sure what brand, and 8 wetsounds ws-650's in the transom. Should sound pretty good.

Guys-

A few things that we did/modified on our Epic-

Dynamat-
dynamatted all of the plastic on the starboard side of boat. Removed the coax speakers and cup holders and just stuck dynamat all over the place on the inside of the plastic. Also down by the drivers seat on same panel as the heater switch. This made a HUGE difference with the rattling that the kicker sub was causing. A Dynamat 'doorkit' was more than enough for me, about $60

Fae-
Fresh Air Exhaust, a MUST! Not only for the Epic but ANY big block. A HUGE difference in exhaust noise and fumes. approx $525

Glove box spring-
$15 glove box spring that keeps the glovebox lid up, but collapses easily. I used the one that Supra used on the '05 supras. I got mine from my supra dealer and mounted on the bottom with a screw and the top with some Fusor/Fuzor

Cup holders-
Added 2 stainless cup holders on each side of gunnel on rear deck of boat.

Added 1 cup holder up on dash to the left of the glovebox

Trash Hole-
I'll take pics and post, VERY handy.

Surf/Wake forks-
upgraded the dual wakeboard rack forks with the dual rack that includes 1 surf and 1 wakeboard rack fork on each side. Just call samsonsports and they will let you know how much it is to upgrade, i think it was like $60 total.

IPod control-
I did swap out for the Ipod control for the one that you can skip tracks/shuffle etc from the remotes and deck. NOTE- For those of you are upgrading to this adapter, you will also need a 2nd splitter for the input that goes into the rear of the deck, currently, the input is occupied by the wired remote splitter, good thing is you can just buy another splitter and run both remotes and the new Ipod adapter. I got my splitter from the local supra/malibu dealer.

The Ipod adapter does not fit through the plastic piece that the existing Ipod hook up comes through so you will have to 'notch' the plastic piece or remove the plastic piece altogether (the exposed hole is kind of ugly, so 'notching' is ideal)

Cooler Lid-
We put sticky foam on the corners of the inside of the lid so it wouldn't rattle when the subwoofer was hitting. Also keeps it from making that loud noise when people (mainly my kids) dropped the lid back in place after getting into it. That noise scared the $#!* outta me the 1st few times I heard it, it sounded like someone lit a firecracker in my boat!

Things that I plan on doing over the winter-
-Adding a wind dam
-going to paint or rhinoline the speaker grills on the transom red to match the boat.
-We have a custom graphic that we are working on, hope to have it ready by next season.
-maybe add a 2nd heater with 2 hoses on the port side of boat.

Thanks for the info Nic. I assume the heat exchangers get flushed through the garden hose attachment like the owner showed me. I was thinking I might pour some antifreeze down the ballast drain holes and also suck a bit of antifreeze in through the ballast intakes, just to be safe. As for the heater, I think I remember reading that in the manual somewhere. I post some pics on here when I get a chance. What do you guys use for surfing ballast? I've just been filling the front and whatever side we're surfing on, but my friends suggested leaving the front empty. Has anyone tried this? The surf wake is sick, like up to my waist, so I don't see the need.
Old     (usostyle)      Join Date: Apr 2006       09-10-2009, 10:04 PM Reply
Surfwake set-up-
Side tank full and front 3/4 full to completely full.

This set up is great for the goofey side wake, we are still trying to dial in the regular wake.

keeping the front empty shortened the pocket when we tried it.

No problem Fred!

Damn ICE! You really went to town! I was thinking about doing the fresh air exhaust next summer. Where did you get yours from? Do you notice it effecting the wakeboard wake at all? Could you snap some pictures of it as well?

Good call on the upgraded racks! I think I will just upgrade one side though as we often have 3 wakeboards in the boat and one surfboard.

Surf setup: Side tank full, front full, opposite side tank 1/4 to 1/2 full. Drive in a really big circle to take out some of the steepness, clean it up and lengthen the pocket. I can surf it from the transom to nearly 15 ft back with little effort.

I haven't had the pleasures of loading up the ballast yet as I wanted to break the motor in proper. Even with it unloaded I can see how enormous the surf wake is going to be. You could surf the Epic with no ballast in it even. Looking forward to it now that I have put some more hours on it. Going to give it a whirl this weekend!

Dang Chad, just saw this today. I was out in Halsteads bay yesterday doing some boarding and surfing. My muffler baffle needs to be replaced just as yours did. Anyone else run into this problem?
Old     (tuneman)      Join Date: Mar 2002       09-14-2009, 6:29 AM Reply
Nic, how did you like the wake? I was out surfing with some friends on Phelps bay on Saturday, but used my buddy's Centurion.

I'm surprised they sold you a boat with a known muffler issue. They would have saved a lot of money if they swapped it at the factory. The background on this issue is the muffler manufacturer used bad epoxy to secure the baffle in the muffler. They have now fixed the problem with glassing in the baffle.
Old     (_vitty_)      Join Date: Jul 2009       09-14-2009, 7:33 AM Reply
The wakeboard wake was awesome. I struggle just to get wake to wake as I just started boarding about a month ago. My buddy is rather good though and he was launching higher and farther out than he ever has before. He was loving it.

We still have to do some dialing in on the surf wave. It was huge but it was too steep for our board. What speed and what trim tab setting do you use? We used your ballast recommendation.

Also, what is your take on a fresh air exhaust. I'm thinking of putting one on next spring.

I surf between 11 and 12 mph but thats with my gps from my truck as my speedo and PP aren't working. My trim tab is at 25%.
Old     (tuneman)      Join Date: Mar 2002       09-14-2009, 8:27 AM Reply
Trim tab at 3/4 up, speed varies from 10 to 11, depending upon how may folks in the boat. Make sure you turn slightly. That takes out the steepness.

Fresh Air Exhaust is worth every cent, big time. I don't have one on my Epic, but I had one on my previous VLX. Makes the stereo waay louder and it sounds like you're in an I/O. Epic should make them standard equipment.
Old     (_vitty_)      Join Date: Jul 2009       09-14-2009, 2:22 PM Reply
Sweet I'll give that a go next time out. I think fresh air exhaust is my first purchase next spring. I'm also going to upgrade all the speakers to polk mm components.

I was looking at the fresh air exhaust website, and that thing looks awfully easy to build yourself. Anyone agree and going to try it? I believe they're made of stainless steel. I bet you could make it out of a plastic or rubber pipe, as long as it was the proper heat rating. Any ideas? I'll more than likely not going to start anything till the spring, but when I do, I'll keep it updated.
Old     (_vitty_)      Join Date: Jul 2009       09-14-2009, 5:54 PM Reply
They don't look too terribly complicated but I have no tools or access to tools to complete the job. After all the work and effort put into it I'm sure I would be up near what they cost anyways. I've heard great things about Fresh Air Exhaust products so I wouldn't hesitate to support them. It would be nice to be able to make your own though no doubt.

Fred, do a search on this discussion. I posted there that it doesn't make sense to build it yourself since a guy has already figured it out specifically for your boat. So just pay him and get the FAE. If your time is money, it's the cheaper route.

BTW, there's no way you could make it from rubber or plastic. The forces from the prop wash are too great. There's a lot more technology in the FAE than it seems.

Here are some pictures courtesy of ICE-a of the FAE on their Epic. It looks like a solid setup and one that I will be investing in come spring for sure.

Yeah, never thought about the prop wash. To make it from metal would definitely be time consuming and not worth it. I've already emailed FAE to see if they have the measurements of another '07 Epic. Is there a difference from the '07 to '09 with the different motors? They look similar from the pics. Anyway, definitely be adding one of these in the near future.
Old     (_vitty_)      Join Date: Jul 2009       09-15-2009, 8:53 AM Reply
Good question Fred. They do look pretty similar. I had also emailed FAE and he said that he had measurements for the Epics already, although I mentioned I had an 09. Currently there is a $50 off promotion going on. After the promotion the FAE for our boats is $450 plus shipping. Wish I had the cash to drop on one now...

What is the fitting coming through the transome just below the platform on the FAE pics? Is that where the water hose can connect for flushing?

Any reason they tie the two together? Seems like two 90 elbows would do the trick. I'm pretty sure you could put something like that together for pretty cheap and wouldn't have to weld anything. You can buy rolled pipe from these guys in stainless or aluminum...

Yes I did. Much appreciated!! You sold me on the FAE exhaust. Been so busy with work I haven't had a chance to respond to you yet. You don't by chance have it laying around since you have the new 23E do ya!? haha =)

I don't think it's just about putting the exhaust into the water. It's about getting it directly in the line of the prop wash. As soon as that prop starts spinning at all. WHoosssh!

Anybody get a pic of the amp install yet?

J.Brenner, I snapped 2 crappy pictures with my cell phone this evening as it is the only camera I have. The boat is at my parents and my camera is at my house. At any rate I will post them up later. Could at least give you an idea.

Ben C has the 23E...or at least I saw a promotional video for the boat and he was driving. His son is Tony Carroll and I think he is an Epic team rider.

In this picture-

Glove box spring-
Holds the lid up and the spring collapses very easy. Same spring that Skier's Choice used in '05 Supra's. Installed with Fuzor to the lid and then a screw on the bottom inside the glovebox.

Cup holder next to glovebox-
very useful for cell phone(s) or other little nick-knacks you need to get to quickly, or of course, drinks too.

Sunglass holder clips on windshield-
We have 3 double sided sunglass clips for sunglasses (6 pairs of sunglasses total).

I do not have many 'rules' on my boat, but one I do have is- "Don't put your damn sunglasses in my cup holders!"

I'm thinking of putting in a mooring cleat on the flat part of the platypus billed front. Its the flat part on the very front of the boat. Tying off to my dock on the cleat underneath the water is a pain. I almost fall in hooking onto it. Anyone else thinking of doing something similar?? I don't like tying up to my tower braces in the front. It puts marks in my nice white finish haha.

Trash hole-
Cut out under starboard passenger seat, behind drivers seat, directly under LED light, used a black plastic 4" speaker box port as housing and on you just tie end of white kitchen trash bag on inside so the porthole goes straight into the bag. Very handy.

Extra Cup holders on gunnel on rear deck-
handy when swimming off back of boat & lounging on back deck.

Dynamat or foam in corners of inside cooler lid-
Helps with the loud noise when people drop or lightly drop the lid back into place. Also helps when you have the stereo up, it doesn't rattle from the sub anymore. I am sure you could come up with something that is a bit more permanent and looks better, but this doesn't bother us so we rolled with it.

The 23e-

This is a pick of the 23e all covered up ready to go back to San Diego in my driveway. Gary and Eric from Epic brought it up to Boise for the Big Boy Toy show back in June. We had a little "BBQ/Lakers vs Magic game" get together with the Epic guys, my dealer, and other vendors that were @ the Big Boy Toy show.

Nic, the mooring cleat/loop is inside the front hatch where the anchor is. Just tie it there and the hatch can still close as long as your rope isn't super thick.
