RADtastic video!

So my friends and I put together a little video of us riding here in MN. We decided to take a weekend and shoot a ton of video and see what we could come up with. Unfortunately the weather was pretty crazy (STRONG WINDS) and we had to battle a storm the first night. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

Ryan is that from just this last weekend? Dang you are FAST! I'm in MN, I wake on the Mississippi in Anoka/Coon Rapids on an 87 Supra SunSport I just got this spring! Also I just won Inland Surfers June contest for a 4'5" surfboard! I will have to upgrade flash before I can view your video. Doh!

Yeah man, we shot it Friday Saturday and Sunday. I edited the rough cut last night and finalized it today. You definitely will have to check it out though cuz I think it is pretty RAD. Definitely makes me want to get back out there and do more riding that is forsure!

Ryan - nicely done! That is definitely the best wakeboarding video I've seen. Also watched "The Expectant" which was hilarious. You are quite the filmmaker! Am looking forward to more of your videos. Is this just a hobby, or do you do this for a living (cuz you could!)?

Awesome man. I loved the timelapse of getting the boat ready and the shot from behind the gas cans. That film is exactly what I aspire my summer film to be like!

I would also like to know what camera you shoot with and your editing platform.

And yes, I do make films for a living but I like to think that there is a thin line between business and pleasure. Videos like this definitely keep me going!

As far as the video goes, I think the slowed footage is a little bit played out. I mean it looks great every once and a while, but whole videos are just starting to bother me. Considering the whole skate and snowboarding film industry is all about HvX $L0w Mo! OMGGG. I mean just because people have HVX's makes people think they have the right to slow everything down. Ha, it works for this though. No hate. Good job though, good riding. + Its nice to se somebody put a little effort into a video once in a while. Everything was super clean.

I hope to see some more stuff soon!!

Just Googled the Panasonic AG-HVX200. It's about $4000 - $5000 + ~$700 for a waterproof housing. That's some pretty serious equipment.

Damn man, sweet all the way around!

A lot of it is improvising. If you have ever worked (or ridden) with me you will know that I am all about ghetto rigging. I do own the camera but the 35mm adaptor was provided by my good friend Scott Regan who actually was the one that DP'ed The Expectant. As far as the dollies and jib's they are all pretty ghetto rigs that I have put together over the years. As well as that sweet cable cam in the film as well.

The housing is actually just an EPIC housing for the old DVX that my buddy had bought a while back. We just took the tray out of it so that the HVX fits but that doesn't provide you with a start stop record function anymore. So basically I took the camera remote that came with it. Put it in a ziplock bag and had it right there with me on the tube. It worked fine but there were a few issues.

Now, I do have to make a statement FOR slow mo footage. I grew up watching the old snow and wake films that were shot on FILM. Back then almost EVERYTHING was over-cranked for slow-mo and I think with sports stuff it really adds a new level to the film. Now that video can shoot slow motion and cameras are more affordable (if you think 4-5k is a lot for a camera than you are way wrong) it gives more people the ability to shoot that way, creating a surge of over-cranked and similar shot videos. For me, I am finally able to shoot the way I have always wanted and probably always will. Slow motion gives a sense of majesty to everyday activities, otherwise everything just looks like "video."

That's my two cents anyway. I hope it makes sense since I kinda rambled there for a bit. haha!

Here is a photo of our "dolly." As you can see here it is basically just PVC pipe, some plywood, and skateboard wheels. I have several "contraptions" like this lying around my house. My roommates hate it. haha!

4-5k is a lot for a camera... for me. It's all relative.

But if it shoots videos like you made, it must be worth it.

i disagree with Adam up there. I think wake videos look better in slow mo, it really makes every trick look epic IMO. like if this video was all regular speed i dont think it would be nearly as cool, cause when its slower you can really see the technicallity and amplitude of each trick. Just my humble opinion

I agree slow-mo shows how technical tricks are but I like to add the normal speed following it. Because In other words when people see the slow mo they are like "damn they make it look easy". Then you see it in normal speed and your like "what the f***, how the, damn that was tight." lol

So mix it up...

Is that a Redrock Micro 35 I see there on your HVX? I can't believe someone else has one in Wakeworld land--very cool! I'm running one on my Canon GL2-- I've not yet used it for wakeboard recording, but I regularly use it for shorts.

Very cool. It looks like The Expectant was shot for the 48 Film contest in Minneapolis. My buddies and I participated in Madison, Wi this past year, and we'll be doing it again in 2 weeks. Awesome to see your skills in practice on here-- keep it up!

Both "The Expectant" and "The Feminine Mystique" were created for 48 Hour Film Projects. I have been doing that contest since the beginning in Minneapolis. About 5 years now. I don't have the others but if I can find them maybe I will post them up too.

And yes, it is the Redrock on the camera. It's pretty cool. Actually is a friend of mine. Have you used the SGPRO at all? That one is SWEET!

I have not used the SGPro, but I do recall tracking it before I got an M2. I was not as impressed with the footage on the SGPro, but if say it works, awesome.

What are you using for display? I've found it's damned difficult to focus with just the LCD or the eyepiece (plus the image is flipped), so I've been using a computer for display (not as portable, you need three people to work the camera (camera op, focus puller, and someone to carry the computer ;-))

It was freezing that morning! I had to wear something! haha!

As far as monitoring the video we had this little HD monitor off camera. Either me or the AC would hold it to monitor focus and whatnot. Worked pretty well.
