Yep. It is expensive to pay them. They would run every European famer out of business if we grew what we wanted and sold it on the world market. What the farmers are being paid is basically keeping them from collapsing the worlds farmers markets.
What does that have to do with the price of rice in China anyway? It is expensive to pay the farmers to not crush Europe.
Also, If California was not using illegals for near slave labor and free water, the rest of the country could compete on a level playing field as well. The farmers can pretty much kill the price of any food product world wide if they grew what they wanted.
