I've just purchased a new MC X2 and I'm starting to get geared up for next summer - it's going to be a long winter! I've never wake surfed, nor have my young kids, so wanted to buy a board that would serve us all well to enter the sport. Once we get good, I can see buying a separate board for me and one for my kids. In the meantime, I picked up a Hyperlite Broadcast 5.4 from the marina I bought the boat from. I was told that this would be a great all around board for adults and kids to get started.

I'd love to hear from you guys as to whether I've made a good decision.

While wake surfing is not my favorite activity, I do surf a couple sets a year and the most enjoyable set's I've taken have been on that very board. I'm on the bigger side at 6'4" 225 so a lot of the super small boards just don't have the surface area for someone my size to stay in the "pocket". The bigger the board the easier the ride, I think you made a good choice. Also good call on a compression molded board. The surf style ones are really fragile and if you're just learning you're bound to shoot the board into the back of the boat a time or two. This would dent a surf style board but your Broadcast will survive. This board will get the whole family up and surfing and even though a bigger board is still pretty easy to carve around. You won't be doing shuvits or anything with it but if that's your game you should wakeskate.

I'm not a huge fan of the Broadcast, personally I found the rear traction pad uncomfortable and the board much more difficult to find the sweet spot than other boards.

I would look for something with high volume (Thicker). This trait is commonly found in more surf style construction boards which requires a little more TLC but the benefits are worth it. More volume means more buoyancy, the board will ride higher in the water, is much easier to catch the sweet spot, and can be ridden further back out of the pocket and into the wash than traditionally compression molded boards.

I'd recommend considering the O'Brien Ally http://www.obrien.com/product/ally/ It's a high volume board, has comfortable traction pads, large shovel tail that gives the board lots of push / allows the board to be ridden in smaller less than ideal waves, and my favorite feature is the board construction. It's constructed from soft plastic, like a high end boogie board and has foam rails so when beginners launch it into the boat it's not going to scratch your gel or worse, gash someones head open. and at 4'8" it's much more maneuverable for the kids and would take up less room in the boat.

-Cheers!

The broadcast is okay for a newbie board to some extent. problem is that everyone gets bored with it and realizes it's really lacking in performance. It sucks to pay retail for something like that.

I picked up my broadcast used for $75 with a surf rope included. I kept the surf rope and sold it for $100 after one season.

For a starter board a prior year model's LF fish or even a ronix Koal would be good.

I would check out www.evo.com and look at their closeout deals.

The board will be fine. But really you have a whole winter to look for boards on sale or used boards...

Once you get everyone up on that board take the large middle fin out and it gets a lot more fun for the advanced riders.
