Anyone else notice the influx of rich folks on here? Dave must be advertising in Forbes or the Wall Street Urinal. I remember back in the day when wake boarders were poor common folks. Middle class guys getting by. Back when I bought my first inboard for 22K.

Seems like we can't hardly get threw a boat purchase thread, or 50K truck thread, without a…"I can pay cash for any of them(referring to 100K+ boats)" or "I can just write a check for it", or maybe... "I don't care about the price", possibly.."Price doesn't matter" and my current personal favorite "109K is extremely cheap"

Am I the only one who has noticed all the 1% ers among us on WW? Quick question for all you rich guys(and gals). How did you amass your large fortunes? I assume they are huge when you can whip out a 100k for a luxury item. That its just your "walking around" money. I'm not mad at you, not hating, I just want to know so I can get me some of that too!!

rates this low don't really make that much sense to pay cash anyhow. take that money and make it work somewhere.

Can't help but to think the same thing. Buy hey, SOMEONE has to take the depreciation hit on the new boats.

Better them than me.

I'll say, though the job market is crap, people with jobs are making more money than ever. Anyone that has remained employed all the way through the recession makes considerably more now than then, but will probably agree that you do twice as much work as you did in 2007ish. Its like the business has returned, but the work is being done by fewer people.

Also, as Chris said, the stock market killed it in 2013.

On another note, about 2009, the entire boat market changed. Financing was out completely and only cash buyers continued to buy boats. The boat market in general has given up on common folks. The cable is for common folks now.

I bet most of the "I pay cash" people really have a 15 year note on there boats. Not all of them but I would venture to say most of them. IMO anyone with that much money to toss around would invest it in something that makes them more money. I know even if I had that much cash it would be extremely hard to write that check. But I don't so no need in worrying about it!
Old     (bcrider)      Join Date: Apr 2006       01-10-2014, 8:53 AM Reply
I think it could also come down to that, yes, they have the money but like anything we all choose where to spend our money. I'm hoping to upgrade boats this year and will probably spend between $50-60k (CDN) to do so. There is now way in hell I would even consider spending that on a car or truck.

Most folk that I know in that income category make it a personal rule not to finance "toys". There are exceptions though...

Exactly what he said.
Folks who are making 250k/yr, which is right around 20k/mo, and only 5k/mo in living expenses bank roll dollars quite quick. That's a residual of 15k/mo, and id be willing to guarantee no truck payment, credit cards paid in full monthly, and most likely no mortgage payment..

So does paying 100k cash for a boat really seem that unattainable? Imo, no.

Not gonna lie, most of my stuff is financed, although there are a few things that are free and clear. Luckily I'm still living well within my means, and should be getting a promotion in the next couple weeks, so that'll help pad the savings account even more. As for what I do, I like to call it "white trash cash"...or oilfield money for those easily offended.

Me and my beat down 05 v215 ride out with no payment. Towed by my tired old 05 Chevy half ton without a payment.
My car is paid for, but again I'm just driving a, forbid me, another used vehicle.
My dirtbikes are second hand as well. Please forgive my white trash second hand equipment. But I'm payment free!

Am I the coolest guy at the launch or on the lake, no. But my truck has 60k miles and gets the job done, and my v215 is a decent boat to tug myself and my scumbag friends who like to spill their cheap beer, and are jobless *******s.
Could I make a payment and tow my xstar with a badass king ranch diesel and make a payment until I'm 40, sure. All the hoes will dig it.
But for now, I think I'm content and would rather invest that money.

And hopefully in 10yrs I'll be that dbag paying 140k cash for a Wakeboat. Haha

I did the same. I plan on upgrading next year to another 15 year note! Not real sure if my knees will hold out until I turn 40-45.

I can't wrap my head around the 15yr note thing.
I have a 99 centurion (that I now need to sell after the purchase of the v215) that on the 15yr note theory would just now be getting paid off if one was to buy in 99. Do not want that.
Couldn't imagine paying off a boat that id buy this year, in 2030 when I'm close to 40 years old and the boat is wayy outdated

I took a 15 year note because you can always pay more a month. I like knowing that if I damage something and have to be out a grand or so I can always make the $250 a month with not putting me in a bind. If you trade up every year or even every 2 years it really doesn't matter. Not sure how often you ride but 200 a week in fuel gets steep as well.

Same here. Its just a tow vehicle NOW! It was a daily driver until the lift. Now its a 97 540I grocery getter that gets me from A to B....... and its paid for, with liability only!

Lets all sell our boats and pitch in on a g series!

Most people don't keep boat loans for 15 years. However, the industry is designed around them. Part of that reason is that larger coastal boats are VERY expensive. Next time you go to the boat show, go check out a 34 foot sea ray. It's 3x the cost of a G23.

I took the 12 year loan (and on only ~1/2 of the purchase price) because that's where the best rate is. I'll make double payments and a few lump payments around tax return time and get it paid off in around 5 years.

I justify the boat payment by driving a modest 2008 Honda Civic as my every day car. My wife drives the tow vehicle since she works closer to the house. This minimizes fuel costs since i'm 15+ miles from work.

Also, for reference, the boat in question is an Axis A20, certainly not anything like a G series.

I can't see paying 100 G's for a boat. Ill stick with my old Cali, not by anymeans a BADA$$ boat, but it gets me and my family out on the weekends. I tow it with my 2006 Nissan Frontier or the wifes Eco Flex. All my stuff except my house is paid for. Not because we killed it in the stock market but because we live within our means, we arent out to be the ramp heros, we just want to have fun and make memories with the kids. Maybe one day we'll get a new to us boat with one of the surf attachments but someone else will have def taken the hit for the depreciation.

To amass money you have to rob Peter to pay Paul.... Declare bankruptcy when this goes tactic goes south and then start over. Obama has seemed to do it ever since he entered a political office!!
While you are doing this you have to make sure that you keep what you generate in cash and hide it in tax free interests. That could be offshore, in another currency system, or best yet in Mason jars buried all around your house!!!

Im 22 and i did a 12 year note on my boat. Put 2k down. But I pay more than my payment most months. I'm young, want to be able to have fun while I can still get around. But mine will be for sale at the end of this summer to start my own branch of my mothers business financing rent to own eagle buildings. Maybe in a year or two after that I can step into a g23!

Anyone else think the G series are ugly, but they attain a cool factor because they are expensive?

Kind of reminds me of American Force wheels. Most of them are ugly. But remain cool because they are 8 grand for a set

They don't attain a cool factor because of the price tag, they attain a cool factor because they are highly functional and well known as one of the best wakes possible right now. They compete with, what? 1 or 2 other boats for best wake? They also have NSS available for easy surfing. On top of that, they are a well built boat by a company that has a TON of experience in water sports.

Besides, I wouldn't call it ugly. Best looking boat on the water? No. Best looking wake boat on the water? Probably not. Ugly? No.

I bought my 2014 G25 because an acquaintance of mine purchased a G23 and thought of him having a more expensive set up than me really hit me like a football bat. I then one upped him by purchasing a 2014 Range Rover Autobiography LWB the next day to pull it with. My 16 year old son is telling me that the Autobiography (his daily driver) just shut up everyone at his school that has a Jeep.

Some of us were richer before we took up boating...

Just saying...

Actually I can be in the boat all day doing anything for less than it costs me to take the family skiing. I'm keeping my paid for boat because I have seen nothing better for me.

Boardman, being able to afford a 100k boat is not exclusive to 1%ers. Thats hilarious if you think that.
Who cares what other people are able to do with their money?

And I like how you are taking my comment so far.
I'm not able to pay cash for one of these boats either, but I've been in the boating idustry since my first job at 15 so when I see a brand new almost fully loaded for 20 thousand less than what i usually see it go far, yea i think its a pretty good deal.

It all comes down to individual priorities. I've seen people waste money and go broke, but I've also seen people die rich with no experiences at all. My wife's grandfather died rich in a crappy nursing home because he was too cheap to pay for a better one. My wife and I aren't rich, but we do pretty well. We didn't travel as much as we should have before we had kids, because we were trying to save for kids, and now regret it. I see having a nice boat as a way to enjoy our money while young and give my kids something to enjoy. As long as the payments don't hamper my ability to do other things I see no issue in doing a 15 year loan. I'd hate to wait till I could buy it with cash and have my kids too old to get into it, and I be too old to go out and enjoy it.

@Ridegull…sorry to disappoint but its not just all about you. I hope that doesn't derail you narcissism.

I'm not talking about affording one..I'm talking about all the people "paying cash" for them. But your right your certainly don't have to be a 1%er to finance one. It amazes me still how easy it is to get financing even after the crash.

Your comment was just fresh in my mind..just giving you a hard time. There is someone new almost daily talking how they have a 100K burning a hole and they will be slapping it down on a boat a bunch of perfect strangers(WW) pick out for them. Another favorite was my boss told me to go pick out a boat for the shop, what should I buy. He said whatever is fine as long as I like it.

I have asked at most of the dealerships locally and the answer is always the same…very few of the boats are bought cash. VERY FEW, as in a handful a year. Considering we are one of the biggest inboard markets in the country, I'd say thats probably a pretty fair representation of the market as a whole. Those few people must all grace us here on WW.

I see youre from MN, not too far from my hometown near minneapolis. Definitely true that not many people in that area pay cash. Unless youre by lake minnetonka haha. mn inboard sells a stupid amount of malibus on that lake, and im sure a lot of them are cash and traded for new a couple years later.
where i live now, we actually have a decent amount of people pay in full. its a relative to where you live though.
ive noticed a lot of threads like "which boat" or "boss told me to pick a boat" threads look like dealers pushing a product. that or people like the controversy those threads bring.

I have a couple that come out with me regularly. However, they drive lifted diesel trucks and are country as turnip greens.

There's all kinds of them at my local ramp. See them on/in the boats. But always in a white tee, and never in the water. Hahah

I thought the same thing about MN inboards…I figured with all the cake eaters on Tonka they must sell most for cash. They told me nope..95% are financed. MN inboard is actually the #1 Malibu dealer in the US.

I don't like the look of the sw's. But if that's what it has to be then that's what it has to be.
Probably will provide more protection to the speaker from my scabby friends though. Considering they are mounted between the seats and floor in the seating area.

That they will, I went that route also due to wanting black speakers.

I started off with 1 pair to replace a pair of mm691 polks that had ONE speaker go mysteriously missing from the pair.
I have a second set of the mm691 that are brand new. Haven't even taken the boat out with them yet, that I will also most likely replace with the 808s as soon as I figure out what to do with them. Either sell them if I can or put them in my truck maybe?

LOL, hardly. Most folks that kept the same job saw years of no bonuses, little to no raises, increased health insurance costs, loss or deduction of 401k matching, etc.

Then you have to think of inflation. If you were making 75k in 2007 and 85k now, you are making the same amount of money.

So does paying 100k cash for a boat really seem that unattainable? Imo, no.
You forgot a huge expense - taxes! It's not like that 20k a month is going home with you. Many people making that kind of bank are also living at that lifestyle as well.

There can't be that many rich people buying new boats, there were only 5,500 "sport" boats sold last year.

I plan on buying a new boat this year and will be stroking a check for it.....right after my bank deposits the money in my account. It makes you wander how many people do that just to make people think they paid cash.

I guess I'm one of those guys...what I did was leave my 80k/year engineering job for a big company at 26, sold everything i had pushed all my chips in & bought into a tiny company and through years of working my a$$ off and not being smart enough to give up it worked out well. Now it's a big company and I still love doing what im doing. I absolutely did sacrifice some level of fun when I was younger but I'm glad I did now. Everybody is different about stuff & you have to do what makes you happy. I agree not to sacrifice experiences in life though, but do everything in moderation.
