What is the fuel mileage on a 07-08 Dodge diesel. MPG's and mph/ unloaded and towing. I think it is a 6.7

I have a 2007 Dodge 5.9 CTD 3500 Crew Cab, SB.... Have 12 or 13K and getting close to 17 MPG unloaded.... That doesn't drop much while towing, but drops a bit.... Think I was around 15ish on a 600+ mile round trip tow in July.....though don't quote me on that, I really don't remember.

That was a loaded trip, meaning we weren't doing a day trip somewhere, but had A LOT of gear that we were taking for a destination trip.

the 5.9 gets way better mileage due to the new EGR stuff on the new cummins engine..My buddy has an 04 with a 5.9 with a bully dog programmer, banks intercooler/exhaust, cold air intake, aftermarket injectors, with 33" tires and is getting 30mpg

my dad also has a duramax with a mbrp exhaust, cold air intake, and predator programmer getting 28mpg

nothing like 450hp and 800ft/lbs of torque getting mileage like that

also this is calculated mileage

Aaron, The new 6.7s are not nearly as efficent as the old. They are also having some minor probs with the dpf and the vgt. I would stick with a pre dpf on any of the big three, espically if you can get one that gets 30mpg

edit to answer specific question

I have seen as good as 17 unloaded and 14 pulling what the customer claimed was 6k lbs.
17 was mostly hwy.

i have the 6.7 Dodge. I did get great gas mileage. But since I lifted and put bigger rims and tires on it, it fell alittle. Now I get about 14 to 15 unloaded and about 10 to 12 loaded. That pulling my boat with a full tank of gas or my enclosed trailer with all the toys in it. Other than that, I really love the truck. I have the 07' Mega Cab.

I will be adding The Edge with Juice, Intake, and exhaust system. Not sure of what tyoe of exhaust system yet.

Wasnt 07 a split year for the 5.9 and the 6.7 or maybe not?

Yes, '07 was a split year. I purchased in May and there were a few 5.9's, but the 6.7's were dominating the lot. No new 5.9's were coming from the factory.

28, 30? call bs on that also. maybe downhill.

I know of three with programers that get 22-23, maybe a touch more on flat ground with a tailwind.

my '08 ford with sct livewire gets 22h/19c if i am easy on it, not bad for the new powerstroke. and it will smoke the tires when asked to.

I don't see why those figures are that off... my pick up gets as much as 52mpg unloaded cruising on the highway at 50-60mph.

I never get less than 28mpg... ever. even loaded with boat and doing 70mph or so...
Old     (bac)      Join Date: Feb 2008       09-26-2008, 9:34 AM Reply
Its very easy to take a diesel and get 700 - 800 hp or more and still get gas mileage in the low to mid 20's. I think that 28 may be a bit of a stretch, but it probably isn't off by much. Granted, it isn't very cheap to build one of these diesels that will be reliable in the long run, but many guys do it. If you build it right the first time, it will last a lifetime.

28 mpg (hand calculated) with a boat at 70mph??? wow

I don't think you are gonna get 800hp and 25 mpg from a bluetec system not with out removing it and a different pcm.

Bill - You guys in the US might laugh but it's a 2.5 litre turbo diesel (Common rail style). Its a 2007 Mitsubishi L200 (Think it's called a Triton in the US market? but equally.. think you get different exterior, interior and engines). It's chipped to 165BHP (stock is a MASSIVE 135HP! haha) and pulls my current boat (18ft sportsboat) and last boat (20ft SAN) just fine; both setups would be with the truck full of gear, a couple passengers and the boat fuelled up. I know you guys with bigger engines will have an easier time of it with the big blocks and huge torque outputs but I've never been caught holding anyone up on the roads and she cruises comfortably. Still not found a hill steep enough to put me in difficulty; though I'd admit if I had a boat over 21feet I'd want to go to 3 litre Diesel. I fairly regularly tow for 3 hours non-stop just fine...

I honestly think that whilst it's nice to have tremendous amounts of power I'd rather save the money (fuel is about 3 times the price over here).

To clarify, The truck in its day to day state about town is getting about 32mpg (I have a heavy right foot!). When on a cruise on the highway doing like 50-60mph I often see it sit at 52mpg for extended periods (until I come off the highway or hit a mountainous patch).

we really need to see how we are testing the mpg.... I have a 5.9 Cummins, with 5" turbo back exhaust, no cat, 35" tires, 60 hp programmer and the computer tells me that I get about 23-24MPG on flat highway at highway speeds. I have never hand calculated it without towing and my buddies say there is no way I am getting that. I hope to take a road trip soon and get an accurate calculation. So not sure.... but i definitely doubt some of these real high estimates.... I also know the 6.7 is having issues with the particulate filter and the fuel economy is down
Old     (brit_rider)      Join Date: May 2004       09-26-2008, 11:30 AM Reply
My figures are based on filling the truck up, hitting the trip switch and then working it out once I fill up again - that normally gives me a return of about 35mpg... Of course I'd love it to be like 55MPG but I don't exclusively drive on the freeway... mostly town driving with a big highway trip per week or so.

I know the US is undergoing big changes at the mo in terms of what diesels you have available but you'll have the same engines pretty soon I hear... Its not uncommon to have a 70+MPG car over here.... sub 20MPG cars are rare (as in super cars)...

My bone stock 06 3500 Crew Cab Longbed Dually has gotten a best of 22.4 unloaded on a freeway trip...with a 5-8K boat, I average about 15-16.

On my truck, the key is 2000 RPM's...under that, the mileage is great. That equates to about 72 mph on the freeway. If I push it up to 2100 or so, (75-77 MPH), the mileage drops off by a bit.
Old     (billhall)      Join Date: Jun 2006       09-26-2008, 12:24 PM Reply
Brit, I would love to see those kind of numbers from my truck. I have a Ford Expedition and only get about 12 mpg hwy, 10 towing. The old expeditions are pigs and i wish I would've went with something else. I guess I wasn't real worried when I bought it and gas was under $2.00/gallon!! haha, all I can do is laugh now as the gas pump speeds past $100 easily while filling up.

Either way, it's only a matter of time til we see those kind of smaller diesels over here...or maybe not.

10MPG? Yikes...

I'm sure the vehicles will come to the US, I believe VW are releasing a load of Diesels into the US this coming year... so it makes sense that more will follow.

Yes I did have my computer reprogrammed for the tires.

Brit Rider,
My understanding is the US limits the amount of diesels that VW and others can import. If they imported them all then Bush and his oil tycoons would go out of biz as the alternative fuels would gain in popularity. Ridiculous theory, but it makes a ton of sense....

Diggs - no doubt. I would think the US government weren't doing their jobs properly if they allowed limitless cars into the US from outside... You guys are famous for having a huge auto industry and in turn, that industry provides you with stacks of jobs etc etc. I just wish the big wigs at GM would get off their asses and produce efficient vehicles like the rest of the world for sale in the USA and beyond.

The only way you guys are pushing 20 mpgs is if you are driving 55 on the freeway, or you are heavily modded to the utmost effecient injectors and intake.

Milage varies a lot between trucks of the same model, a friend had an 05 Duramax that he was getting around 25mpg HWY, he traded it on an 06 and could only get around 20-22. I had a 2004.5 Dodge 3/4 ton with a 6 speed manual, I had an Edge chip, 4" straight exhaust, and cold air intake and got 27 mpg HWY frequently. I now have a 2007 5.9 with the same mods and see 20 at the most, it is a mega cab dually though compared to the 04 single rear wheel.

yeah, i call shennanigans on 30+ at 70mph.

My '05 cummins gets 20mpg at 65 freeway, unloaded, and 15mpg at 55 towing the 22v.

I drive it like a grandma and average 19 freeway and street.

why would I lie about this stuff, I am trying to help the guy out.. I could not believe it myself until I actually hand calculated it out..

my dad also gets about 21mpg pulling our 4500lb camper trailer and around 24 pulling my SN2001 this weekend..

Had all diesels, an 05 Ford 6.0, 06 Ford 6.0, and an 08 Ford 6.2 at my old dealership, towed over 100,000 miles in the last 2 years combined, and never saw a drip over 15 mpg, towing 4,000lb boats. Now my old VW TDI rocked 55 mpg all day long, and my wife's A4 clicks off 35 mpg on road trips. The most fuel efficient vehicle for towing is my V8 4Runner, I can get about 16 on the highway. Doing a 1,500 trip this week with a new boat so we will see how it does.

Ford diesel engine dosen't hold a candle to the Cummins in any catagory including mileage... Depending on terrain my 5.9 Cummins will do 15 mpg on hilly tows and 17 mpg on flats with 4000lb boat in near stock form. I know people with modded ones like mine getting 5 to 7 mpg better then me while towing.

Jason I myself have an 06' 5.9 cummins dodge with programmer, exhaust, cold air intake, 4.5" lift, 35" tires. I'm with Sparky Jay and lucky to get 15mpg average. The lift and bigger tires kills a few mpg. Even before I put the lift and tires on I didn't get over 18 mpg. I'm not buying the 30mpg nor have I ever heard of a dodge cummins getting that much. Sorry but I am going to have to call b.s. from personal experience.

ford owns cummins... thats apparently why dodge cant make a true quad cab, they make a short quad cab or the mega cab. I guess that was part of the deal... dodge can use the ford owned motors if they do not make a quad cab. i dont know for sure.

what I do know for sure is that I am one of the guys calling BS on your 28 mpg towing, i own an 05 dodge cummins, has 100K miles on it and I have NEVER got over 16mpg towing, that was at 55mph with a 5-6K lbs boat.

Agreed, It would be REALLY Tough to get 30 mpg with a cummins with current fuel and emissions. My 06 gets 17-18 if I'm lucky without a load and about 12 when towing. Given my boat and trailer are probably about 6k and I don't drive like I own a prius. Just like everyone else around 55 it could improve to about 15 towing, but I am never cruising long distance at 55. BORING!! My dodge runs best doing 72-78. When I had camper and boat loaded at about 21500 lbs I got roughly 10 mpg. Real numbers. I've since changed exhaust, injectors, intake, programmer, etc.... A little better mileage, but I usually cancel it out enjoying my high torque and horsepower.

No ones getting 30 MPG outta their big diesel trucks claims like that are so absurd. I can totally see Brit getting that outta his smaller p'up with a small diesel but no 3/4 and 1 tons. I've never even see people getting the low 20's like they claim 15-18 is the norm.

Ford (we) do own a share and have interest in Cummins but we are not the majority owners is what I have been told by my Dealer principal.

Dodge has a crew cab for 09

06 ctd 20-22 empty 14-16 towing 5k boat 12-13 towing 7k camper

08 Jeep gr cherokee 3.0l diesel 27 empty 16-17 towing 5k boat.

Btw the jeep has the new emissions so at least the germans figured out how to get the mileage with emissions.

07 Duramax (before the DPF filter), with a progaramer, 6 inch lift, with 33's. In town, 14-15 mpg, highway, 18-19. Towing the V215, about 13-14 on the highway. When it was stock, with the pizza cutter small tires, I could see 21 if I was doing 60-65 on the highway.

I know I saw at least 1 mpg loss of milage with the ultra low sulfer diesel. Wish they could do away with that crap. Always wondered what was worse, the little bit less soot with worse milage or better milage (less over all consumption) with a little more black smoke. They say that is why some of the cost of diesel has gone up, harder to produce the ultra low.

You guys need to understand something, the 30mpg plus claims aren't COMING from somebody who lives in the US. Please read it again. In the US, they've totally screwed up our rigs with every add on BS, and fuel here blows too-in regards to mpg. I can get constant 21-22's with a 4.5 lift on 35's. You can buy sulfer mixins and squeeze another 2-4 more mpg, BECAUSE our fuel is low sulfer. Please, Fords and Chevy's should have their own threads. You just can't compare apples and oranges.

Chris,
The price of diesel has gone up due to the production of ULSD(ultra low sulfur diesel)
I work in a chemical/refinery plant and we make it. It does take allot more to refine it and clean it where as in the old days it was the bottom draw off the column. We can thank the companies and the EPA for that. The EPA wanted to burn @ something like 250PPM out of the pipe and the plants said with thtis new technology we could clean it to burn less then 30PPM. Had to attend a class and learn this when working with it.

if you go to dieseltruckresource.com and post up that you got 30+ mpg, i'm pretty sure someone would hunt you down and pour hot tar all over you...that's a ridiculous statement

i have an 07.5 2500 CTD and i get barely 15 in town and 18 on the highway...i'm about to take make some modifications to my truck that will increase the mileage and all around performance of my truck, but it still won't get more than 20mpg city and 24-25mpg highway...i'm hoping for around 700+ miles to a tank (mostly highway) and i'll be happy

before you do any shopping for a new diesel i would visit the website above b/c it is filled with a lot of useful info....not to take anything away from the people on WakeWorld, they just get more in depth about their rigs like we do about our boats on here

Simple, Toyota doesnt have a diesel and if they did, it wouldnt get anywhere close to 30 mpg on the highway. There is not one full size pickup of any make or model that gets any where near 30mpg.

I really hope that Toyota makes that Dually Diesel truck, it will be a monster. Judging on the specs I read a while back, thats gonna be a stout truck.

And for those of you who don't believe that you can get over 20 mpg (I'm not talking any more than around 23, 24 max) and still have a high horsepower, torque monster, read around on dieselpower and some other sites. Its possible to be done, the parts are the there, it just isn't cheap to build one. You just have to do your research and put the right parts together. Most of these guys though also run laptops in their rigs to apply different preprogrammed tunes that they have

Also, GM just did a full press release on their new 4.5l diesel for their 1/2 ton trucks. Its a very cool motor in its design. Its going in the '10 trucks. This means Ford will have to step it up and follow through with theirs that they have been talking about forever. I'm holding out for one of the new 1/2 tons after they have been out for a year or so

Toyota shut down all Tundra operations for 6 months, they arent releasing any diesel any time soon. The one we bring to SEMA is a concept no where close to production. If and when it does go to production, it wont get close to 30 mpg.

My trip up north ended up being closer to 1800 miles. Averaged 9.9 mpg But I had some serious hills 50% of the time. The v8 4 Runner went as fast as I wanted it to go with no problem.

Yes, I drive a 5.9L diesel and also call shenanigans on the 30mpg. I did see an article last year on a 12 valve Cummins that got 30, but you had to do so much stuff to it that it became stupid. remove the mirrors, streamline your wheel lugs (it was a dually) etc......

Impossible for a daily driver 5.9 unless you're always going down hill or messed up your tire sizes with your programmer.

Anyone know why the more efficient trucks aren't available in the US?

Seems odd... is it just down to budget or what? I know the trucks there are alot cheaper than here, wonder if that has anything to do with it.

We haven't needed them until recently as the fuel prices have gone up. Diesel used to be very cheap here until about 2004.

Took a trip this weekend and ran 63mph and got 20mpg. It sucked going that slow.

18mpg at 74mph
20mpg at 63mph
