Do the bird deterrent solutions out there actually work? I am thinking about adding one to the lift w fishing line but don't want to spend $200 if it doesn't work?

Or do these poles w pennants work?

I made one years ago the winter I spent in FL.

Will C's boat sat in the water next to the dock and would get destroyed by bird **** ... my rig was a PVC "T" that slid over where you attach the rope on the tower. Each branch of the "T" had string running down with CD's on them. They would spin/twirl in the wind and did a really good job of scaring things away.

Only picture I could find was a screen grab from an old old old video ... if I was to rebuilt it I would use fishing swivel pieces, less chance of getting tangled than the line

In my experience fake owls and snakes work well for the first week or so, but its seems like birds are smart enough to figure out it never moves and start ignoring it.

These work for everyone on our lake, on boat lift canopy and on their docks.

Plastic owls work good, especially if you hang it with wire/string that moves

I have deterred a massive woodpecker problem with the pictured home brew scarecrow.

The base is an umbrella stand so it can be moved occasionally.
The structure is simple 1.25" PVC.
The shinny stuff and solar powered owl (turns head) are from amazon.com.

This has been working for 1.5 years now.

Note the replaced siding. Here's a picture of what the woodpeckers were putting behind the old siding...

Bought the house as a bargain fixer upper. All of the woodpecker damage was done before I took ownership. Pretty crazy. Very happy my scarecrow is working since their appears to be an infinite supply of protected woodpeckers in the area.

Yes, the wood peckers poked 100s of holes into the siding and push 1000s of acorns behind the wall.
