I know that feeling ! Seems like sometimes we spend more time back and forth to the hardware store then working on the project ..lol

It's just hard to tell if that thing would be too wide mounted like that.

Since this is made for kids I have done a lot of thinking about the throttle. My first thought was how to make a traditional boat throttle. Then I thought it would be harder for a kid to learn to use and also would stay wide open if the kid does nothing, no dead man position. Then I thought about a spring throttle that has to be held down and returns to neutral when let go but obviously that is too hard to use while steering.

What I decided on, and I know this breaks all the rules, is to use a foot pedal. It's simple, kids already know how to drive power wheels and things with pedals, and it dead man positions to off.

Not worried about it too much. Kids will use it for only 30 mins at a time or so on a glassy lake and it will be stored inside.

Would be very easy to add a bilge pump if I find it needs one, but I may have to drill some holes in the various parts of the boat so all water can collect in one spot. Right now the water can't get from the passenger area to the motor area because there is no hole

For the windshield, look at lexan or versions of it. Flex, bend, drill without fear of breaking. It will flex to what ever shape you want without snapping like plexi will. You can even bend in a sheet metal brake

some fishing boats use a foot pedal for throttle. sounds like the perfect solution especially with a return spring.

thought about colors/decals?

I was thinking of painting it similar to my boat. The details of the side would be very time consuming so I was thinking just the same colors in the same parts of the boat but not doing the decal work. If there is anyone out there that wants to paint this thing to match let me know lol.

Bro! Get the side printed in vinyl and stick it on there!

Did a water test at the lake today. Trolling motor just strapped to the back for the test. Test went well. No leaks, boat was stable, and it is a great speed for a kid! Both me and my wife drove the boat and it's pretty fun!

Next I need to finish the top epoxy and fiberglass and also drill a hole for the motor shaft to come up through and hook up the steering wheel and pedal.

Cut down the trolling motor. Will feed through shaft log and pillow block and connect to steering cables.

So I finally got my shipment of wood flour so now I can finish filleting the bow and deck plywood to the hull. It was sort of just sitting there before.

While it was curing I thought no boat would be complete without a proper swim platform.

Fiberglassed the top yesterday. Once cured will start priming the boat. I predict many layers of primer and sanding to get a fair surface. Going to attempt to make a windshield also. More pics soon.

It's been in the back of my mind but still trying to think about how to do it. I think thin pcv pipe so it's light weight. There are issues with bending and shaping it though so we'll see.

If this thing doesn't work out you can always turn it into another bookshelf like the one in the back of your garage.

Haha that's hilarious. That one back there is actually from my wife's grandma I think. Not sure who made it but it's way smaller.

For the tower, you might be able to use EMT conduit, which can be bent easier (but you'll need a bender of find a good electrician friend who can help.

PVC can also be heated and bent as well, we used something like this when we were installing back in the day, it basically is an electric element and a metal box with rollers at each end.

https://www.zoro.com/greenlee-pvc-he...Q&gclsrc=aw.ds

It's not that fancy and hardly justifies the price for a one time usage, but if you were to rig up some sort of heater, you basically put the pipe in, wait 5 minutes, pull it out and bend however you want.
Old     (h20king)      Join Date: Dec 2009       06-17-2016, 3:56 PM Reply
If you want to bend pvc get some removable caps put a little IPA inside before heating . Not sure what it is but the IPA helps so you can bend without flat spots in the pipe

IPA? Why not Schlitz?

I built a plexiglass bender using nichrome wire and some scrap mdf so I can make a windshield. I cut out the windshield with cardboard to get the flattened shape.

This weekend I'll give it a shot with the plastic. Cut it with table saw and jig saw and make the bends with my bending table and hope for the best. I wanted to do a large curve but there are so many things that make it much more difficult so I think I'll stick with the straight bends like the cardboard.

Ok I'm pretty stoked about this one! I never bent plexi before and my bending machine did awesome. I think the windshield came out great. As I said, I wish I had a big oven and could do a more traditional curved windshield but hey this works.

I'll screw it down later after the boat is painted.

Old     (hkysk8r187)      Join Date: May 2004       06-18-2016, 12:41 PM Reply
Tried making a large radius bend windshield by just forcing it to bend but as you can see one side snapped. Won't be able to do this without making a mold and getting access to a large oven. Probably not worth the effort so I'll just go with the one I made already with the straight bends.

First coat of primer. This really revealed all the little imperfections that I'll need to sand out. Of course...more sanding!

I think it would look good if you bent 45 degree bends at the corners of the windshield then painted them black. It would look like a Malibu windshield.

I spent some time figuring out the electrical for the boat. The idea is that the foot pedal makes the motor go, and there is a 3 position switch that will mount to the dash that switches between forward and reverse, or off (middle position). I've also added a horn that's hooked to a button to mount on the dash as well.

I'm using 2 relays to turn the motor on. One for each polarity.

Are there any electrical experts out there to double check this and see if there are any concerns? The pic may be hard to follow, I could provide more info if needed.

Ok, I did a wiring diagram. I could use some input on this since it's not something I know a lot about. This is how I have it wired now, and it seems to work, but is there anyone out there more knowledgeable? I want to make sure it's safe and doesn't go up in flames.

Second coat of primer sprayed on and sanded down. The hull is getting smoother and smoother each time. This time much less of the wood is visible because the surface is getting more fair. Going to do a third coat tomorrow and see where that gets me.

Hope all the fathers out there had a great day. Bonus if you got on the water!

4th coat of primer. The boat is pretty smooth now after prime and sanding 4 times. If I could go back in time I would have done more sanding before the 1st coat.

Need to flip the boat and start priming the top. I'll sand it better first this time and hopefully can get away with 2 coats instead of 4.

Primed the deck and bow. Once dry I sanded it and applied s second coat of primer.

Some of the fiberglass texture is still visible after the second coat so I'll have to sand again and do a 3rd.

Maybe I should have gone a little heavier on the epoxy before priming since it seems to sand smoother. Oh well, like the bottom hull I'll eventually smooth it out with enough sanding and primer.

Second coat of white went on this morning. Much better coverage with the second coat. Not sure I need a third till this is dry. Pics may look the same? It's a cleaner white now, not so much grey primer coming through.

Tomorrow depending on how the white looks dry I'll either start with another color or do a final white coat.

Also, if anyone ever builds one of these...I suggest doing the carpet after you paint. I don't know what I was thinking. It's been hard to keep it covered. I think I may have gotten a little paint on the edges of the carpet. I'll just leave it though, it's not too bad. Would have been easier to just do it last and have it nice and clean.

You should have just made this a little big and used it as mold to make future boats. then you could spray the gel coat is and glass in a mold like the factories do and sell these suckers

This might be something you would want to add:

https://www.amazon.com/Remote-Engine.../dp/B006LE2W0U

Since the unit is used by small kids, if they operate the boat in an unsafe manor you can kill power to the boat.

Well I had my first big mistake, but I can fix it. Like a dummy I tried to put metal flake into my color coat but that didn't work out so well. As the paint dried it clumped up on the flakes and looked sooo bad.

I sanded it all off and now I'm starting again but this time with no flake. I'll put the flake in the clear coat like you're supposed to!

While I continue to paint I started working on a tower. I measured out the attach points on the boat onto some scrap plywood so I can build the tower without it being on the boat and move it on later.

I bent the pvc by filling it with sand baked in the oven at 450 degrees for 5 minutes. Once the sand is in the pipe it bends very easily.

I'm using T and 90 degree connectors but instead of using the right size I decided on using a smaller size so that you don't have a bulky connector. I used epoxy to attach a wooden dowel to connect the pipe to the connector. I'm hoping I can sand it smooth and paint it.

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! Now that I'm back I finally repainted the blue portion of the boat. I mixed a little white with the blue to lighten it up just a bit. I like how it came out.

Also, when peeling off my masking tape I peeled off some of the white paint. I put a quick coat on there but I need to wait for the blue to dry so I can sand it a bit and patch it up. Hoping it won't be too noticeable.

Painted the bottom black. Once this is dry I'll do a coat of metal flake clear coat over the blue, and several coats of clear over everything. Have to wait 24 hours before I can do the clear for this paint to dry. It takes forever and it's cooled down a bit here which doesn't help.

The bottom isn't as smooth as the rest of the boat but I'm gonna let it slide since it'll be on the bottom anyways and not visible. Only you and I and the fish will know about the slight imperfections

This would be a great Toys for Tots Auction item in a few years once the kids are grown. I am sure there are lots of us that would bid on it since we would never have the time, energy or skills to build it. Great work.

Got the painting finished and moved into clear coat. First went on clear with blue and silver metal flake over the blue. After that remove my masking tape and did pure clear over the entire boat. Ran out after 2 coats so I need more clear. I was hoping to get around 6-8 coats.
