1. Riding on the Delta in the moonlight. No lights were required. It was still 80+ degrees, zero wind and water as flat as could be.

2. Riding Radar Lake for the first time and then Wakesurfing around Radar Lake at night.

3. Putting my VLX in the water for the very first time.

Let's change it up...

Seeing my then 11 y.o. kill it in a wake tourney and actually try a front roll (not successful) as his last trick of a stand up run up to that point.

Seeing my then 14 y.o. land his first tantrum.

Going to a 'wakefest' and cracking my rib.

Throwing a scarecrow and not having to listen to that familiar sound of the boat decelerating to pick me up!

Good thread idea:

1. Landing my first (and only) backside 5 off the dub during a mid-October lunch break last year on Tahoe. Lake Tahoe, CA.
2. Landing my first backroll, albeit butt-checked, after about 100 attempts. Lake Almanor, CA circa 1995.
3. Watching the sunset at our local reservoir while idling back to the ramp after a fun, glassy, and boatless (except us) early season session with beer, friends, etc. Numerous times, 2005-2007.

I have a few bad moments too, but the question asked "best" so I'll go with those.

Watching my daugter get up first try on the board.

Watching my daughter forget how to get up after she had been up about 10 times. (It took till the next season and watching "The Book" to quit standing up too early)

Watching my son clear the wake for the first time.

Hmm, that seems to show my priorities but maybe it shows my relative lack of skill.

Landing my first back roll. (Shawn K. boat)

Riding at Midnight with Shawn K. on his birthday.

My 3 year old wakeboarding last summer by himself. (Shawn K. Boat)

I'm seeing a theme here, I guess all of my best wakeboarding moments involve Shawn. It must just be a conincidence because the guy is a real tool.

First time I got up on a wakeboard
First wake to wake
First invert.

The funny thing about the learning to get up the first time, is that it wasn't really important to me when it hppened because I wasn't really into the sport yet. It was just another thing to do while at the lake... little did I know I was going to be addicted to sport you years to come...
Old     (romes)      Join Date: Sep 2006       02-28-2008, 12:48 PM Reply
i guess FINALLY gettin up on the board was a big one for me too probably more so than the other 3 i listed cuz it took me 2 entire days of almost drowning cuz we were behind this little old 190 SeaRay and no one knew what the hell they were doing...

every nite when the suns setting on the delta and we gotta boat full and we're just puttin back to the island w/ the boat slappin and everyone's just kickin it....

thats what makes this the dopest sport out for me

1) Taking my mates out and teaching them to ride.

2) Getting a bigger, heavier, gruntier boat (with a tower and ballast, what a difference) and figuring out the ballast system for the first time.

3) Finding out I didn't have to rebuild my motor after it drank a bit of water.

They all tie for #1, but as a list:

1) First time trying/getting up. (that's right, I got up first try thanks to this site!)
2) Riding behind a tourny inboard for the first time.
3) First w2w. Going up and not feeling that familiar pounding on my knees as I come down.
4)Being out on the water with my family and it being totally silent and buttery.

1. First time seeing wakeboarding on tv and feeling the overwhelming desire to persue it and ditch the skis

2. Meeting Scott Byerly (first favorite wakeboarder) and getting him to sign a pic i drew of him and geting my first REAL wakeboard (had a plastic and aluminum topped thing made by a tubing company before)at a phoenix boat show (1st boat show). (i'd put this first, but this could never have happened without #1)

3 its a toss up between three
A. sharing wakeboarding with friends especially my bro albert from taiwan
B. landing first invert
C. First time riding the slingshot recoil

Watching my 7 y/o son get up for the first time while I was in the water with him. That started all of us to ditch the skis for a board. My first time up. My first face plant, something you never forget!

Flying up off the wake unexpectedly for the first time while learning proper technique (that's the last day my slalom ski saw the light of day)

Landing my first TS180 (thanks Antbug and Kevin Geary for getting up early to ride, and making me try it "one more time")

And lastly, seeing the faces of inexperienced riders get up for the first time or land that first surprise W2W....

i dont even know where to begin ive had so many memorable experiences, some great one from the very begining and some that i probably shouldnt share that i experienced while growing up in highschool. hahaha. ill give it a shot though.

i think ill start with leraning a backroll and sticking it 5 or 6 times in a row straight.

in highschool going from a houseboat trip with the church for 5 days at mead, then coming home and then getting in a motor home to go to shasta for another week, then coming home and hoping in a truck and going to lake powell for the first time. all 3 lake trips right in a row with no down time.

i think the other was the first time i came up to the delta to film for delta sessions and ended up meeting my wife.
Old     (dococ)      Join Date: Mar 2002       02-28-2008, 5:50 PM Reply
Geez... SO MANY! How to pick three?

First time ever riding in the boat with a real "pro" taking a set (Thomas Horrell in his pink hair days, hasselhoffs and a giant floaty slob HSFS5 off the triple up, plus all these old people in a pontoon boat were cheering him on, hilarious!)

"Babysitting" Leslie Kent during video shoots in the FLA keys.

First trip to Shasta (the first time I linked 3 different 360s in a row, also later same day first time linked blind 180s both ways). I know, unimpressive for some of you, but for this decrepid old fart, it felt pretty cool. I owe Schleprock Fisher for that trip, you rock, lady!!

First broken board (man, did I feel cool!)

First Raley ( had "lost" my backroll, kept geting slammmed, got super aggro pissed and just threw the Raley, was like WHAT?!?!?!)

First... oh wait, that's already too many!
Sorry. Am I disqualified?

Getting cold clocked on a raley attempt. only regret is that it wasn't on video but it is still one of my favorite stories. plus it will make it all the better when i stick it this summer

sticking my first toeside roll. i actually felt legit for that whole day then i went and watched a wake film and reallized that i was still pretty poor.

summer of 05 in general was as memorable for me as any time in my life. Hit up lake powell 5 times and that in and of itself is uber beavu. landed some tricks and felt like i was understanding progressive edging which was absolutely necessary behind the yamaha ar 230 we were rockin at the time. and it was really my first summer to actually be wakeboarding regularly. i had done it before but always with years between session. i can only hope this summer will compare.

I think my most favorite moment is that scenario where:

everyone in the boat has been helping someone land a "first" and they are paying their dues to get it. They finally get it and the whole boat jumps up hooting and hollering, horns blaring, fists pumping, etc. Then getting to push them in. Thats one of those really good moments I enjoy the most.

Jason, I remember your #3, you and Heather were looking pretty cozy that morning and CW & Arun kept on giving you two a hard time about it. Then when you and him rode doubles and you almost decapitated him with a low flying raley we all started laughing about "payback" in the boat. Good times!

None of my moments on a wakeboard have been memorable but I have many has proud father.

Bringing home an HO Perez, telling Chris you've got to try this new "skurfer" (we were slalom skiers at the time) Chris got right up, rocketed in at the wake, tried to clear it and ate shizz. He wouldn't let me stop pulling him until he had cleared/landed it a few times. His comment was "Dad this is way better then jumping (standing) on the kneeboard because I don't have to fall and get up again!" I knew he had found his passion.

The first time Chris had a good outlaw pass at the old Bel Aqua tournaments and even though he took 2nd to Mike Schwenne (who just dominated them back then) Mike tried to give Chris the first place trophy.

Hooking up with Buffalow and Jocko for a WakeTV shoot (the first time Chris got filmed). Hanging out with all the other kids and parents in this unbelievably great family sport and the friends I've made over the years.
