I've decided a Gen2 XStar will be my next boat. I don't believe the hull changed too much but what else do I need to look out for? What years are best and why? We'll likely be running up to 3k of extra ballast.

07 is the year to have IMO. New tower, no VDIG screen.

Agree on 07s being best year unless you can find a newer one with the 2 point tower and your budget allows it. Get the ballast timers reprogrammed, add the PWT ballast, get a new prop.

Go with the LY6 motor. 8.1L is a ticking time bomb and the MCX is under powered if you weight the boat down quite a bit. We had a 2004 (with an 8.1L, luckily only a couple minor issues) and it was an awesome boat. Never rode any newer gen2 X-Stars, but can say that you can't really go wrong with any year. Good luck!

Keep schooling guys. I'm ready to learn.

I see a lot of 08's for sale. The 40th anniversary edition. This must be the first year with Vdig, are they problematic? I have an 09 x45 with it and never had any problems. Also what do you get with the pwt edition? Just graphics and a name or is there something else?

I've got an 08 and have not had any problems with VDIG. I've got a about 450 hours on mine. Pretty reliable thoughout, just a fuel pump and now my depth guage/water temp sensor gave out.

Last time I looked you could buy new VDIGs on ebay for a reasonable price so even if it goes out its not a big deal. I agree that the LY6 is the motor to have. Rock solid and enough power with the right prop to push 3-4K# ballast. I've reprogrammed my ballast timers and fill stock side tank (250#) + 1100# sack no problem.

Mine is a 40th and they usually came pretty loaded up with options. I think the PWT was the same. They start as an appearance package but were usually ordered with a lot of options.

I had an 08 XStar and loved it! Has a phenomenal wakeboard wake! I just hope you aren't too into surfing or you'll be highly disappointed. Port side surf wave is...well....meh. And starboard side surf wave is non-existent! But if you're a core wakeboarder then the Gen 2 Star is best bang for your buck right now (especially since the popularity of surfing has really driven the price of Gen 2 Stars way down)!
