Hey Ryan, What lens are you using. The EXIF says D200 at 18mm and I was just wondering. Your photos are exceptionally sharp. Can't believe your ISO in that one is 100. What was your exposure time ... 2-3 seconds?
Old     (wakesurf12)      Join Date: Jun 2003       09-24-2007, 10:21 PM Reply
Hey man! The lens in that last shot was a nikon 18-70 3.5-4.5. It is the kit lens that comes with the camera. I unfortunately still have that as my wide angle (thought it is exceptionally sharp, just wish I had something faster) The lenses in the other shots were either taken with the Nikon 70-200 2.8VR or 50mm 1.4 I also have a sigma 15 fish in my bag as well. A lot of it has to do with light too. I have only one flash right now but I am planning on adding a couple more here soon.

As far as that photo goes, it was shot at a 30 second exposure at f9 I was definitely using a tripod on it and I set the timer on it as well so that I wouldn't shake the camera when I pushed the button. The rocks were then lightpainted in. It was definitely a lot of fun to get some photo time in tonight. It was much needed.

Nice shots guys. I'm glad this thread is still alive. I tore into an old hard drive over the weekend to goof around with a macro lens.

Ryan -

You are no longer allowed to use the kit lens. Kind of puts a damper when I try to convince the wife that I need more expensive lenses because kits lenses are garbage.

E.J. - Yep. Ryan, Jim, their wives and Jenacee were up there a good part of the day on Thursday. I met them up there for a couple hours in the afternoon. I got up there and realized I had left my battery on the charger at home. I think I set a record driving home and back.

I'm not sure Kaleb. The truth is I don't know jack about BMX but the guy on the bike is a friend and I'm sure I could find out for you if you want. You could also call Mike at RampRats and ask him for yourself. http://www.norcalramprats.com/

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but I'm new to DSLR photography. How do you do the photos with the B&W background and subject in color?

BJ, that effect is usually done in post processing. It doesn't matter what kind of camera you use. When I do it, I use two copies of the same picture (layers), one black and white and the other color. I stack them in Photoshop and then use a layer mask to "cut out" the color portion I want, leaving the rest in black and white.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=868934707086866783&q=photoshop+lay er+mask&total=46&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&p lindex=0

This video demonstrates layer masks. Just think of only using two layers, the foreground layer (top) in black and white and the background layer (bottom) in color. There are other ways to do it, using a single layer but I've never liked the process.

What does the shot of the light bulb look like in color?

What settings did you use? all in all, cooool shot!!!
Old     (gehennaengine)      Join Date: Jun 2005       10-19-2007, 9:49 AM Reply
Thanks, Eric. The original color image looked pretty bad. It was really dingy and orange. I tried just correcting the white balance but I didn't like that either so I did the BW conversion. The settings were f3.5 1/400.

Walt, what shutter speed did you use to capture the motion of the rain?

The lightbulb shot was mostly just trial and error.* I started out with an unbroken bulb and setup on a tripod with a shutter release cable.* I exposed for the brightest area of the bulb and then started breaking the glass off of them.* The filament will burn outside of vaccum for ~1 second so I would push the shutter release and plug the light in at the same time.* It took 3 attempts before I found an exposure that seemed to work then I did 4 or 5 more bulbs.* This is the original file off the camera.

Upload

For post processing, I just bumped up the contrast, cropped, cloned out the lens flare and a small piece of the clamp on the lower right, then converted to BW.

Walt, that is funny that you posted those night shots. I think at the same moment you posted those images my buddy and I were off shooting some stuff in my car. We were going to shoot a snowboard rail jam downtown but it got axed by the bar's property manager. I was super bummed. So we decided to play around a bit. I should post the photos of the mounts for the strobes and stuff too because it is way too funny (really ghetto). Anyway, I think we hit warp speed!

Thanks Ryan, but my pics don't even hold a candle to the amazing ones you posted. I really love the sunset on the finger and night shot behind the boat, truly in awe over them. I hope take great pics like that one day. I need better equipment for that. I took my pics with a Canon A75 Point and Shoot.

How would everyone feel about setting up a group on Flickr or some other photo site? We could post our shots to a pool and have a separate discussion board to gab about them. Does wakepics.com have this kind of functionality? I don't want to steal page views (and the ad impressions that come with them) from Dave. It's just that these extremely long threads take forever to load with all of the pictures and I want to keep this thing going. I stare at photos all day long on other sites but this one if becoming my favorite. Another plus of using Flickr (or similar site) is that we aren't limited to 150kb uploads so we could post larger pictures with less compression and the artifacts that come with it.

If there isn't much interest in setting up a group on another site, we could just start another thread here on WW. I think it's more important that we keep the participation up.

Jed, I like the flicker Idea. the reason i have not participated in this thread is beacause of the file size limit. Flicker would be the perfect place for the wakeboarders photography group. I could set it up if anyone is interested.
