My buddy just bought a 2011 Malibu VLX. It has the four tank mls ballast and and the power wedge. We rode it for the first time yesterday. with stock ballast full we rode 65ft at 22.5 and 70ft at 23.4 with the wedge between all the way down and 3-4 clicks up. The wake was great. We're curious to see how other people are setting their boats up both with stock ballast and some extra weight. Between the normal guys that come out we have 2 400 lb bags and a 1000 lb triangle bow sac. How would be best to utilize all 3 of those bags? Naturally I'd want to say triangle in the front and the 400s in the lockers but every boat is different. Also if we wanted to fill only one of the 400 lb bags on top of stock ballast where is the best place to put it?

first thing I would do is lengthen the line.... isn't 65' at 22.5 really short for this boat?? my neighbor has one, have not ridden it yet but I think they run 75' at that speed

agreed. Except the speedo should be checked for accuracy.

400s in the rear and triangle in the bow is exactly how I would set it up.

65' @ 22mph is basically my favorite line length for a Malibu. Depending on skill level, you can definitely run 75' @ 22.5mph that speed.

Check the speedo on GPS, as mentioned above.

^Jeez man you're not landing in the flats every time? I am running 70' at 21.6/8 on most malibu/axis...

Nope, I use a nice slow approach with a big explosion off the top of the wake so that I go up high and take it wake to wake. Of course from time to time, I take it into the flats. Favorite trick (and probably my best looking trick) is Melon to 180 into the flats.

I'm really an intermediate rider on my best day, so your mileage may vary. I honestly find it pretty rare to see anyone riding less than 22, though. Typically I ride at the slowest speed of the group at 22. Most people are more like 22.4/22.6 and 65-75'.

We are going to have to confirm the speed with GPS next time out. I assume that's where the line length difference is coming into play, because we were riding right in front of where the wake curls over. We are used to riding a supra 21v and an 02 super air nautique so the wake was a bit wider than the more narrow wakes we are used to, but it is an easy adjustment.

Wow I ride my 2007 vlx at 23.6 at 70 ft. I feel that a slower speed the wake washes over but yea the Malibu wakes are much wider than any other boat I've ridden

Check that speed on GPS, very likely it's not correctly calibrated.

08 VLX all stock tanks full , 400lbs in rear locker, bow triangle in front, wedge 2 clicks up. Rope length 70ft @ 22.4mph. Love this setup. Ride behind a G23 with stock ballast frequently and this setup feels quite similar.
