Diesel owners... do you change your own oil?

Just curious. I'm planning on doing it, but I assume I need to keep proper records to keep my warranty intact on this new truck. What do you use to drain the oil into? I have a container but I don't think it'll hold 13 quarts!

I have a larger capacity oil drain pan just for my diesel and it easily holds 13 quarts. Keep good records and doing it yourself will not void a manufacturer warranty that I am aware of.

I change my own, but I am way out of warranty. What truck do you own my 6.0 is 15 quarts. I just use a big rubbermaid tub.

Shawn, you don't have to keep records. The only reason ones warranty might be voided is if the engine failed due to not changing the oil. Which they would determine by examining the engine. No offense but anyone can just make up records of an oil change. Incidentally the oil change intervals on your truck are determined by the truck not a specific time/miles formula. The intervals have been falling between 7,500 and 10k miles depending on how you use it.

Pep Boys if you have one in your area. They are the best price that I've found, brand name diesel oil (shell rotella) and filter for around $80 bucks. Not worth the mess of doing it yourself for that.

I have the 2011 F350. It's 13 quarts according to the manual. Yeah Hate that makes sense. Anyone can make up records.

I'm hoping it's around 7500 or more. That makes it pretty nice on that size of an oil change.

$80? I get oil and filter at Wal Mart for $50. I'll do it myself rathet than trust the monkies at Pep Boys. And I will put the $30 in savings each time in my tank.

I avoid posting because someone will always argue with no matter what you say. I though suggesting an $80 oil change was safe, but noooooooo. hahaha

I change my own as well, along with the fuel filter at every oil change.

Ajholt7, check your manual just to make sure you're filling it correclty. When I had my 03 6.0 it was 14 quarts. Maybe they changed it in newer 6.0's.

Nu Bu, when you change your 5.9, do you remove the filter from under the truck or take out your intake to gain access to oil filter. I have yet to do my own oil change on my megacab. That's the only thing I miss about that 6.0 (ease of changing oil).

Shawn, what type of oil filter does the 6.7 use? The old 6.0's had the filter housing on the top of the engine where you just snapped the oil filter into the cap and screwed it back on. It was a clean job. Is that how the 6.7 works as well?

Mine is an 03. I am positive it is 15 quarts.

I don't change mine since one of my best friends is a diesel enthusiest and also owns an oil and lube shop. He does Amsoil oil changes for diesel trucks for $100 including filter. When he does my diesel he also changes my fuel filter so I can't beat $100 for oil and fuel filter change and not have the mess or disposal issues.

my 7.3 holds 15 unless you drain the hpop then its 16 qts

That is a deal. The last time I ordered Amsoil I spent $100 for oil. Motorcraft oil filter is $20. Motorcraft fuel filters were another $50.

I just remove the oil filter from under the truck, pretty easy and I don't think I've ever spilled a drop.

I did not like catching all the oil On my old 7.3 powerstroke took it in to a tune of $80--ford filters seem expensive. My duramax(also too lazy to do it myself) is only $40with filter at the local valvoline

I followed a suggestion from a diesel website and replaced the oil drain plug with a fumoto valve and it makes it real easy.

My dealer keeps sending me coupons for $50 oil changes. I can't buy the filter and oil cheaper then that so I have them do it.

Just at Walmart the other day and bought OEM filter and 3 gallons of Mobil for under $50... But if I had a dealer that would do it for $50 while I wait, that would be a deal I would jump on but that doesn't happen in this area.

I'd recommend getting the valve with the nipple--directs the oil better, plus I found that some extra boat shower hose I have fits right on the nipple.
