Ice, rest. Let pain be your guide. It definitely won't help to push it along quicker. You can work on range of motion, but avoid things that are too painful.

Depending on the type of sprain, a brace may help add some stability, but would be difficult to get into the binding.

In my experience, Ice baths. 20 minutes of ice bath, 30 minutes out, at least 3-5 times a day. I've had wonderful success with this.. Though, you have to be pretty tough to do this.

Also, get a perscription for some Anti-Inflamitories.

After a week or so, start working on your balance exercises.

It is probably too late but RICE for the first 48 hours is crucial. Try searching goodgle for sprained ankles, I got a lot of information.

I just sprained my right ankle real bad on a under-rotated trick. My toes were pushed directly up towards my shin. I was super anal about Rest, Ice, elevated, etc. for the first 48 hrs. Went to a doc on monday (did it on saturday) to verify nothing was broken. My doctor (sports medicine) thought I broke it as well due to the locations of swelling, but luckily it was sprained. He told me to simply let pain be my guide.

He mentioned several pro athletes who had serious ankle injuries and played on them in playoff games less than a week later with little mobility loss. I am sure there were drugs involved to allow them to play through the pain.

His point was "we can push ankles, but knees need rest." This is also coming from a doctor whom I have a strong relationship with that understands my madness about sports, pain tolerance and history. The best thing to do would be to check with your doc, verify nothing broke, and go from there.

Long story short, I wakeskated exactly one week later (very gingerly). I have been roaming it up for the past 4 weeks working on a bunch of non impact basics; so I can keep my "wakeboard muscles" in shape and keep from going insane.

R.I.C.E and Motrin. Then give it a two or three weeks depending on soreness and start using those huge therapeutic rubber bands. Pull it four different ways. Just ask and I'll go into more details.

Just to give you some encouragment...Eddie sprained his ankle the night before riding the first heat in Nationals. Ice,Motrin, and elevation all night and the next morning, Kevin Durham wrapped it right before he put on his board. He had the ride of his life that day, it was flawless and an absolute beautiful thing to watch.

Robyn, Eddie killed it in that heat, I think I will try the ice, Motrin and elevation on Alex's two good ankles before Worlds

Go to a sports medicine doctor! My son injured his right ankle for the third time in less than two years this summer. Broken 8/04, severe sprain 9/05, sprain 6/06.

Most recently, we were referred to the fracture doctor who wanted to cast the ankle, even though there was no fracture. We declined the cast and got a second opinion from the Sports Medicine doc. The sprain was less than three weeks out from his next tournament. We began rehabbing the ankle agressively almost immediately. Do an online search. there is a bounty of good good rehab advice available online. By the time we saw the sports medicine specialist, he was ten days out from the tournament. The doc confirmed the benefits of our rehab program, and gave the best advice I have ever heard from a doctor. He said, "Just go for it and see what the hell happens." He also comfirmed the tremendous benefit of wearing a brace. The best brace we have found, and we have tried tons of them, is the McDavid A101R.

My son wears this brace inside his bindings. He uses the CWB Torqs with hinge tech. to accomodate the brace. This brace has nylon stays built in, and it really immobilizes the ankle well.

He didn't get back on a wakeboard until less than a week before the tournament, didn't try an invert until two days before the tournament, didn't do all his stuff until the day before, and went out and won the tournament. If we had listened to the first doctor, he would have been in a cast for three more weeks at that time.

Immobilizing a sprain may offer a predictable result, but the muscle atrophy that occurs really prolongs the process of getting back to full function. Assuming there is no fracture, start rehabbing as soon as you can reduce the swelling. Do your homework, and be aggressive about it. Good Luck!

The majority of ankle sprains you can be pretty aggressive with you rehab and progression. However, you want to be sure that you don't have a grade III spain in which one or more of the ligaments are completely torn. You may also need some x-rays to insure that you did not do any damage to the bones in you ankle.

Most often an ankle sprain will respond very good to RICE, with early initiation of pain free range of mtion, followed by progression of exercise with resistance (tubing, bands, etc),balance training, and stretching as needed. The first goal is to get rid of the swelling. Everything else will be easier after that.

Good luck.

Constant exercise!

Rest will weaken the entire ankle and prolong your recovery time also making you more susceptible to more injuries.

Get a theraband and work the areas that don't hurt. I’ve been through this several times.

I want to mention another thing I heard (and experienced) as well regarding re-habing an ankle. A common problem for people with sprained ankles is they continually become easier to sprain the more times they are injured. This is due to the elasticity of the ligaments and tendons diminishing from scar tissue.

As I am re-habing I have a feeling of less strength within the ankle muscles themselves. I personally felt it would be much easier to re-sprain my ankle shortly after an initial sprain due to the lack of strength. While I rode and pushed my ankle I did not want to re-sprain it again. Allowing the ankle to regain its full strength would be wise if you are able to.

I also think the amount you can push an ankle depends on the severity of the sprain, the drugs available, and your current situation. I could not personally fit my ankle into my wakeboard boot for a full week. I even had to wear very loose skate shoes to work since my workshoes would not fit (literally, not due to pain).

Just IMHO, does anyone agree, or disagree with this concept?

bucket of ice and a hot tub of water! first sick your foot in the ice until you can't stand it and then in the hot water repeat until ice is gone. brace and ride.
