Any thoughts on this truck and engine? I know the 6.0 had a ton of issues, but I'm looking at picking one of these up and was wondering if anyone had exp with them?

I have one, have had it since new. Have 55k miles on it without any issues. Did a DPF delete and tuner at around 36k miles. I get about 18mpg average with about 480HP to the rear wheels.... love it.

Does the DPF delete cause issues wiht your warranty?

I suppose if I took it in for warranty purposes with the delete kit on it would, knock on wood I have had no issues with it though. I am past warranty status at this point anyway.

I just picked mine up wiht 54k and got a 60k 5 year warranty. I noticed it got fairly poor gas milage, but saw there were some ways to fix that

How easy was it to install?
Old     (jdhart73)      Join Date: Mar 2010       08-22-2011, 9:50 PM Reply
Pretty easy. I went with the Spartan Diesel Tech. tuning kit, its fairly expensive but its the best one out there. There are others though that will achieve similar results. To install its a matter of taking off the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) from the downpipe back. This is pretty easy, takes a few hours and a little patience. You install a straight pipe from the DPF back, obviously this lets the truck breathe much easier. After installing the pipe you plug into the computer with your tuner module and pick your tune... for instance a 210 tune will give you approximately 210 additional HP to the rear wheels. You will freak out at the difference in how your truck runs, this is not your ordinary tuner.
Here is an example of a boosted launch after installing a 310 tune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhFpy...eature=related

Search 6.4L cab off repairs. Good motors, but let's hope you don't need work done to it.

Yeah that's part of the reason I bought the warranty.

So far it drives great, haven't towed with it yet. As stated gas milage is crap, but that's fixable. I'm getting about 12 compared to my cummins that was getting around 17

X2 with the Spartan Tuner. Great set-up. Yes, your warranty is void with the tuner and delete installed. You can take the truck back to stock and let the engine go through one regen cycle, then take it in for the warranty work. I run the 300HP tune for my daily driver, but the 210 tow/performance tune when towing. The Spartan really wakes these trucks up. I love seeing the look on these tuner car guys faces when I toast them from a red light. 1/4 mile in under 14 sec. in a 10,000 lb truck. Nice!

16 mpg city/around 20mph hwy. (truck only...not towing)

Marc, really? You can run a under 14sec 1/4. I would love to see that. Also, doesn't the truck really weigh closer to 8K?

yeah dave, easy under 14 seconds. Here is an example with fuel only, no nitrous.... 275hp tune. In the 2WD standard cab ford you can .75 seconds over crew cab but this is running a 12.87 1/4.

Jake, 'm sure thats with some pretty loose rear end gear ratios. The numbers just wouldn't do it for a truck that big.

No its not actually. Upgraded Suncoast transmission in that truck and EGR delete kit along with upgraded head bolts, these are all upgrades that keep the transmission and engine from blowing up. Other than the aforementioned the truck is fuel only with a tune. My truck is a 2008 6.4L F250 with 35" tires and lifted about 2.5"'s, I ran mine with the 250 tune only and hit 14.24 second quarter mile. I am an inexperienced drag racer and just did it for fun, launched in 4 wheel drive under boost and the truck did the rest. If I were to go up to a 275 or 300 tune I would be under 14 seconds for sure, but I have no interest in doing that and only did the run once to see what it was capable of. On most days I just drive it like a daily driver and tow the boat to and from.

And the triple bonus is you can do the "do you smoke" prank once you take off that pesky DPF!

I have a suncoast tranny in my truck, love it, 7.3. But that is super cool about the 6.4. I wish my truck ran that fast. It would be fun.

Got to drive Chris's new truck last night and man it is nice. I didn't expect a big ole diesel to shift so freaking smooth. Hammered on the throttle and it got up and moved as well.

Anyone got a good tuner to reccomend? I may do the DPF deleter down the line, but don't want to have to take it off for warranty work. Figure if I can get 3-5MPG from a tuner that would help

You are wasting your money if you buy a tuner without DPF delete, the MPG comes from "unclogging" the system by removing the DPF and the regen process that comes with it.

Join this forum http://www.powerstroke.org/forum and go down to the 6.4 section and ask around, they can help you find some cheaper options.
