My wife has given me the green light on 40k for a boat I'm actually trying to stay under 35 if possible but I want the best boat for my money...I'm interested in possible resale in 10 years and overall awesomeness!

I used to slalom quite a bit but oddly enough I want to get into wakeboarding and surfing. I was looking at the crossovers......but everytime I look into one model/brand it leads me to look at another. I dont plan on trying any of these out beforehand as I assume they are all excellent boats and for my novice self I will be blown away with all.

I'm inquiring what is the best value buy here that will give me a good enough ride for all aspects. But if you think one of the boats is a steal and the wake is just too good to pass up and deal with the skiing sucking let me know.

Should i buy from dealer over private since I dont know much or just hire a technician to come with?

2008 BU 23LSV - http://www.boattrader.com/listing/20...-LSV-102422402 (44K - high hours?)

are there other boats you think I should look at or if you see any other good deals out there?

I"m all over the map so I"m just looking for advice as to what to buy...I know I should really try them first but obviously I cant so I just want something I can enjoy and not have to regret.

thanks in advance!!

Not to discount your list, but two great boats I don't see that ski very well for boats that you can surf and wakeboard off of are the Mastercraft 205v/X1/ original XStar(99-2002) and the Mastercraft X2(2006- present). I bet you can come across an 06-07 X2 in mid 30's. And there are x1's/205vs everywhere in that range. Great wakeboard wakes , decent surf wakes, and above average ski wakes for Vdrives. Same goes for a Malibu Sunscape.

The 210 of that era is a wake machine. You can surf it, but it has little bigger bump than the MC and Bu counterparts. And half the storage.

The 03 Model Year 210 is known as the most desirable strictly for astetics. The tower seating gelcoat and options were all the most desirable. So will find the 03's and 04's priced pretty close to even

Since the surf word has come up I would stay away from the X9 and X7 direct drives you listed......can you surf them, sure. But not the best. However maybe you would really appreciate the slalom wakes ? Is priority still slalom? Of is lounging and board spots going to be priority?

Thanks for the quick reply..
I thought the X2 was more of a wakeboard only boat and I let an 08 for $38K go through my fingers...havent seen anything close to that price since. Speaking of which would I be better to wait until December to buy a boat for a better deal or is that a mistake because its already winterized and you cant test it?

I havent looked at the other models you mentioned solely because I wanted to stay roughly 10 years old or newer...not sure it matters in boat world though?

I love the prices i'm seeing for the 210's and I feel they are great value...do you recommend the 03' models then I'm seeing them with high hours though.. or should I stick to an X2 for a little more and newer.

Do all these have electric ballasts and is that all I really need for surfing to start...or do I need a wedge or whatever right away?

I'm not planning on running any courses so slaloming will be more recreational...maybe a run a day though.

2007-2008 Malibu VTX.
Old     (xstarrider)      Join Date: Jun 2007       08-20-2015, 7:19 PM Reply
The X2 is a great Multisport Boat. Especially with the optional attitude adjustment plate(aka center trim tab). Lots of room and storage too.

I own an 08 210. Unless I purely wakeboarded 90% of the time I would take an x2 over the older hull 210 for multisport performance any day of the week. There is no arguing the 210 is wakeboard machine, it's takes the least amount of weight to get the wakes boosting, but when looking for more of a mtiapprt use boat I would take an X2. The engines in these boat will run strong for 1500-2000 hours if maintained properly.

Waiting or buying now? There is no real answer. I would just keep an eye out and jump on a deal you see right away. The used boat market is booming due to new boat prices. Especially in the 20-30k range. At 35-40k you're in a pretty good range for a great boat. All the boats you are looking at will have auto fill ballast.

A VTX would also be great choice, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find one under 40.

How is the VTX for skiing? or is it primarily a wave machine?

I see a 2007 near me for $43K but 533 hours...i'll keep an eye on it
Old     (xstarrider)      Join Date: Jun 2007       08-20-2015, 8:10 PM Reply
VTX is a true crossover was designed to be more of a skiing v drive wakeboat. But the wakes are also good for boarding and surfing. Nautique SV 211 is also good multisport boat.

533 isn't that high for an 07 in my opinion. 100 he a year is decent. Sure there are lower hour older boats , but I think that's not necessarily high.

See this is the problem I run into...when I look at the VTX for $43K and its a 2007 i'm thinking why not just get the 08 23 LSV for $44K...isnt that considered one of the best boats they make?

Sorry a 07 vtx at 43k is overpriced.

2006 x1 for $32K...but says new engine...

would any of you consider this or is this more of a sign there are other issues if a new engine was needed?

Where are you located? That might help suggestions.

Here's a local V-ride, looks nice IMO and I'm sure he could get to that $35k number you're trying for.

I'm in Michigan but willing to travel for right boat.

that v-ride seems like a pretty good price as is....whats the main difference between that and a vtx though?

"This boat has always been wiped down and waxed after ever use."

I believe it.

That X15 has some nice options and it's got the LY6 engine. An awesome upgrade. Another great multisport boat. Not great at any one thing, but good enough at everything to satisfy almost 90% of people in each discipline. Having the LY6 gives the ski wake a bit more of q bump because it weighs more than the standard 5.7L but it gives you the extra top end power for skiing and sounds awesome.

That Vride looks real clean as well. The Vride is the original Wakesetter hull. It's larger(longer) than a VTX . Same 98 beams on both. Skis fairly decent as it has a pretty flat hull. The VRide is 21ft 6. The VTX is only 20ft. The lounge in the V ride is very very roomy.

so is that '08 V-Ride at $37K a better deal than the '06 X1 for $32K with a brand new engine?
Old     (shawndoggy)      Join Date: Nov 2009       08-21-2015, 1:26 PM Reply
if properly maintained, the engines in these boats really should go about forever... or at least for as long as the rest of the boat lasts unless you are a ski school doing 600 hours a year.

600 hours on an 8 year old boat wouldn't scare me at all (assuming maintenance can be verified).

2006 x1 = 205v? That's a TINY boat, even in comparison to an 05-09 vride, which is itself a pretty small boat.

That vride linked is a nice looking boat! Most definitely a Titan III tower though, not illusion.

vride will wakeboard very well, ski ok, surf ok. You will not get a "modern" big surf wake from a vride without quite a bit of weight, which makes driving it "fun," and you will take water if it gets rough at all. There are certainly better surfing boats out there for the $$$. But they have their place and I miss mine sometimes when I think of how easy it was to tow and how light it was on fuel.

for the $$$ I like this one way better, especially as a crossover (this has diamond hull and should ski as well as the VTX): http://fargo.craigslist.org/boa/5166252359.html

Thats a solid find...I was looking at 23lsv before so that has potential.

I guess I should mention I'm on a tiny 250acre lake so I'm not worried about it ever being too choppy...and since I have a place on the water I dont need much room for storage
Old     (xstarrider)      Join Date: Jun 2007       08-21-2015, 2:17 PM Reply
I ride on a smaller private lake as well just under 200acres. Driving a 23lsv on that thing would not be much fun day in and day out having to turn around for pass after pass. Justo my opinion. With that said ........... You almost never really hear anyone say they bought too much boat, but you hear people wishing they had more space all the time.

Personally an X1 vs A VLX/Vride for your situation I would go V ride all day long purely for space . Having put 1200 hours on my own 2000 Xstar and loving the wakeboard wake, that boat gets tight fast. The X1 drives like a Ferrari and is my favorite boat of all time. Handles awesome even when sacked out to the max, but 6 adults is its max comfortably. However for someone not looking to wakeboard 80-100% of the time behind it or looking for a pro caliber steeper wake the VLX is a better call imo.

Even though that one is called an LSV, it's basically the same on the inside (size wise) as the 21' vride. for whatever reason, Malibu adopted a really confusing naming convention, where a sunscape (basically a wakesetter without tower or ballast) could be had as a 21 lsv or a 23 lsv. On the wakesetter side (which would generally be optioned with tower and ballast) the 21 is the vlx and the 23 is the lsv. not sure the logic there.

But basically an early 2000s wakesetter vlx = early 2000s sunscape 21 lsv = 2005-09 vride, at least inside the cabin.

The sunscapes usually came with diamond rather than wake hulls, which have chines which help lift the boat at speed and reduce the size of the slalom wake.

that linked 04 sunscape is really a rare bird, in great condition, with all of the work already done for you (very nice tower, great ballast system). Not clear whether it has perfect pass, which you'd also want to complete the package.

So that Malibu 21lsv is a great price...but what I'm wondering from you guys is...is it worth spending another 5k or so and getting that 08 V Ride or again the 06 X1?

How can you tell me that an X1 drives like a ferrari and then say you recommend another boat?!

Strictly based of interior room and how you described you want to use it. Ultimately it's you're call. The X1/205v/original v drive XStar hull is legendary. Space is its only downfall. That's for you to decide on importance. If space isn't a concern I see no reason not to snatch one up.

The v ride interior is going to be way roomier, be bit more plush, have more storage. It will also surf just tad better than the X1. Again you can't really go wrong with either

vride vs 21lsv... if you plan to ski the 04 all day. Also remember that the vride was the cheaped out stripped down version, so an 04 is probably going to be nicer (stitched dash vs. plastic for example) although a bit older.
Old     (That_Guy)      Join Date: Aug 2015 Location: Central Ohio       08-22-2015, 6:15 AM Reply
That 04 is nice as well. It's a few years older but asking $8k less, which I personally find more appealing.

As far as someone commenting on one driving like a ferrari....they all drive nice/fine in my opinion. I've driven a lot of boats between a 1996 Malibu Sunsetter LX and my 2015 Axis T22 and there is no noticeable difference in driving/handling ability IMO.

I just read the ad again...

-Digital Speed Control (Perfact Pass)

so it has that option as well...I'm seriously considering this. Should I hire someone out there to look this over for me since I know next to squat about boats?

2006 x1 and 2004 21lsv both have a seating capacity of 11? but the LSV is roomier right?

All of the boats you have listed will work for you. The best thing that you can do is get in look around and ride in them. Also put value in a good local dealer that will take care of you. As a new boat owner you should know that boats need worked on and the support of a local mechanic can make your life much easier.

Okay I need this last question answered?!

2006 mastercraft x1 with a brand new engine put in(10 hours)...he sent me over the proof or work and boat test done by the marina...I'm going to call and verify..

Would anyone be hesitant from that purchase or is it a go at $32K? He stated it was poor winterization that insurance covered.

I'd buy the Malibus over Mastercraft X1. In your case, that 2004 LSV21 looks right up your alley.

Can I ask why though? The X1 appears to have all the same options with a brand new engine...and supposedly it still ski's pretty well and wakes way better?

My obvious hurdle is I like the look better of the x1 as well....but concerned with passenger space or are they comparable between both boats?

The LSV/V-ride has a roomier feel. Brand new engine due to a crap winterization job... what else wasn't winterized right or was neglected/not serviced regularly?

Personally, I feel the 2006 X1 is less boat than the 2004 LSV21.

Yeah I asked the same question...but he did send me the paperwork and it was an $8700 job...and they did a water test $250...What else could really have gone wrong at that point? The marina is closed on sunday/monday so I'm calling them tomorrow to see what they say.

I dont not like the malibu...its just older and has more piece mealed parts with more hours...maybe thats a good thing i guess...I just thought this X1 has everything already

is an 04 lsv a better value with the upgrades?

The X1 will ski better. Check the ballast on it to make sure pumps were winterized correctly and work. That would be the only other thing they do for winterization besides the motor.

This one is less than half your budget and I think would do everything you want. I called on it and the owner said it has cruise/heater/shower/fatsacs already plumbed.

http://dayton.craigslist.org/bod/5134945034.html

I mean it's older but its definitely a good sized boat and appears clean/well taken care of 1 owner boat with reasonable hours.

Just trying to help and saw it online.

First of all...I definitely appreciate the effort! above and beyond mate...seems to have quite a bit of options already too

I'm not sure I can get past the colors though and I would much rather spend 30K on a boat several years newer I think...but if this was different color maybe I would be more interested.

thanks though!

Yeah, a friend of mine is shopping for a wakeboat and found that. He's never owned a boat before so I'm helping him look for one. He likes to think a lot before making purchases so who knows if he'll actually pull the trigger so I figured I'd post it for you just in case as well. I don't gain anything by him buying it other than another thing on my plate to help him fix when/if it breaks, LOL.

And no, I'm am in no way affiliated with selling that boat. Call the number and you'll talk to some 70 year old guy it sounded like, haha.

Quote:
210 pros:
- smaller, lighter, narrower 91" beam, requires less weight to enlarge wake
- slightly steeper wake if you like that
- has full rear seat.
210 cons
- finicky about weight placement, easy to wash out one side if weight not balanced
- little storage space
- interior feels small after being in 211
- dated (but classic) design
- rear seat faces forward, so not good if watching behind boat, but good for cruising
211 pros
- storage space
- swivel drivers chair
- wake plate. slalom mode for surfing and cruising, wakeboard mode for wakeboarding
- cost less than 210
- port walk through is great place for extra sac when surfing, cooler, wet items such as wet suit, vests.
- i think it will hold its resale better since it is more universal than 210
- removable rear seat is nice, we rarely use rear seat unless we have full load of people, or cruising.
- tower is lighter and easier to fold down, this is important if you fold tower down often.
- huge swim platform
- snap out carpet.
- with jump seat next to driver there is a lot of rear facing seating
- ride through chop/waves/doubleup is smoother and more solid
- with the cooler door in the center walkthrough, if you throw away the stupid cooler and take the door off it makes for nice access to the storage area and lets the sub vent better.
211 cons
- heavier than 210
- port walk through limits storage/additional balast on port side
- no deck color option, only white (210 doesnt have this either)
Essentially if you're only worried about resale and holding value with a nautique, 210 is the way to go. Especially in Michigan. I just bought an 06 210 loaded for a hell of a deal, but ended up driving to Wisconsin for it and it wasn't listed online, guy just PMed me when saw I was looking for a specific boat that matched what he had. The wake is ridiculous stock, and we have been surfing it with stock ballast and a few people in the boat and haven't even started adding additional ballast yet. It is steep and unforgiving though, and you're not going to be skiing behind it anytime soon regardless of what people will tell you. 211 still has plenty of wake for 90% of wakeboarders, it just isn't "the 210 hull" that carries so much value. You will be able to slalom behind it for fun, just not running a course or anything anytime soon. FWIW the women seem to think the 211 interior is roomier for some reason, but no real sunpad, I find the 210 to be perfect but I came from a small closed bow DD too. After that you can start getting into the nitty gritty posted above.

But you should be able to negotiate the SV-211s down below 30k easily, simply because they don't have the allure of the 95-06 210 hull. For some perspective most people in the midwest ask a crazy premium on nautiques because of the reputation they have, but fair market value for an 03+ 210 should be $32k max out the door clean and low hours. 06s can be had close to 30k in those off season need to sell type deals, and has a truer ballast system, prop rotation ideal for surfing, but a crazy heavy and awkward to fold tower. And don't let hours scare you too much, those engines are bullet proof and should last to 1200+ hours before a rebuild.

Thanks! Is a 23ft boat too big for a 250 acre lake?

I mean it's 1.5ft longer than the other boats you're considering. I can't imagine that will affect anything on the lake except for you/your passengers comfort level and ability to store more stuff. I'd rock a 23ft boat if we didn't have a 22ft limit locally.

That looks like a sweet boat and deal. I'm biased though, have the same boat. You will be impressed with it for sure. Perfect boat for a small lake but it handles rough water ok.
Congrats
