any comments on what you guys prefer? I have 2 Polk db-651 in the boat now but want to add some tower speakers, either 2 rockford 6.5" or 2 rockford 8" (depending on head room) or aerial universal tower speakers with polk db-651 in them.

I would look at getting a pair of the XST650 for the best deal or pony up a some more and get the Icon8's. Why the Rockford's? To me they look goofy and have a crazy hang height. Check out Wet Sounds online and check their blowout deal on the XST 650's. Just my .02

I had 2 set's of the DB-651's on my old boat on the tower. They were pretty weak. If you plan to hear them while wakeboarding, try to look at HLCD's. The truth is going through all trouble to install all the wiring, amps, and tower speakers only to barely be able to hear them is dissappointing, and what you can hear is pretty much distortion (to get them to a volume that the rider can hear). It seems a lot of people who go this way just end up getting Wetsounds after a while.

If you're looking at something cheaper but want to hear it, I'd look into the bazooka horn tubbies. I don't have any experience with this horn version but I did install 4 of the 8" regular ones with a tweeter that were loud on a friends boat. I would imagine being a newer product that these horn loaded ones would sound much better though.

Please get the rf 8's I'm really curious about them and was wanting to put them as in boats. It's between them and the Polk mm651um's.

Kevin, what size amp are you using for your speakers? do you recommend 4 tower speakers over 2? I dont necessarily need to hear it riding but be nice and loud when cruising in the boat and hanging out behind the boat

I have four alpine 7" type R coaxials on my tower getting only 75 watts each and they are very loud and clear and at $100 a pair, very cheap. I had a super small budget, I built the fiberglass enclosure myself, bought the speakers, and used an old Rockford fosgate 200.2 amp. Its a perfect setup for hanging out on the beach, surfing, and long distance listening with the engine off. For wakeboarding, the speakers only project directly behind the boat and they could be louder but for the $300 I had invested for all the materials and speakers. I call it a win win for me.

I have two JL audio amps one 4 channel for the tower and one two channel for the sub and in boat speakers. One is a 300 and one is a 600 I believe.
