I want to weigh down the bow, but not lose the seating. Does anyone know the best place to look for lead. I've seen prices of $1/ pound. Does that sound right? Are there any secrets out there to get cheap or even free lead?

Thanks

Thats what I paid through pop-products.com

He is really good and the more you buy, the cheaper it gets... Nothing beats lead weight!!! Unless it's a lot of boat bun....

Get lead from a tire repair place. They have those lead tire weights and they have to pay for someone to pick them up and recycle them or the police come and take them to make bullets. Either way, they are free. Just have to get them first.

Great. Thanks for the help guys. I'm guessing there's nothing to do to them, but put them in a waterproof bag, right?

I used a metal bowl, propane stove, and a spoon with holes in it. When the lead heats up, all the crap that isn't lead will float to the top, you can scoop all of it out. I then used bread pans to make lead cakes about 10 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-4 inches tall. They are about 30lbs each and I made 10 of them with a 5 gallon buck of bullets from a gun range.

I know a lot of folks melt the lead down, but if you leave it in small pieces it should conform to whereever you put it in your boat, plus eliminate pressure points. I used spent lead shot from a local gun range and put it in bank coin bags. Seven bags averaging about 23lbs each. That size is still somewhat manageable and they all fit directly in the nose of my boat with room to spare.

I have a malibu response with very little storage space. I can fit all the bricks under the bow and transom seats. I couldnt do that with a bag of lead because the seats only have about 4 inches of clearance.

I think I'll be going with the bag idea. The melting sounds like it would take a while, plus I like the fact that the bags will mold with the boat (and no corners). Thanks guys!

Ben - does the $1/lb you paid from pop-products.com include the product in the bags? Do you know where they are located? I want to get some, but I would imagine shipping will make the cost go up quite a bit.....
