I have a teak swim deck and I have been using teak oil to keep it looking nice. My problem is that my boat is always outside and the deck gets dried out quickly. The teak oil is so thin and you have to put about 100 coats on it to make it nice. Does anyone know of any other oils that are thicker that would work. Has anyone used anything that has worked for them?

Thanks

Keep using the teak oil. I would get a cover for the deck. If the sun is beating down on the deck ever day it will dry out quick.

You can have one made or just grab anything to cover it. I use a small tarp and bungie to hold it on. maybe one day I'll have one made or get a bigger boat cover that covers the platform. For now this works fine.

Howard, how about a WickedWakes swim deck cover?

Get a cover, when mine is outside I throw an old sheet over it with small pieces of 2x4 to keep the sheet from flying away.

Have you tried Penefin. You can find it at most paint stores. Heavy duty stuff.

Or just take it off when you are done riding and put it inside. When you get ready for another ride a day or two later put it back on.

Using teak oil is like trying to get caffiene out of Pepsi. Teak oil is just Linseed oil with a bunch of other stuff. The shop, I used to work at uses boiled linseed oil, put down a thick coat let it sit a while and wipe off the excess. Linseed oil can be purchased at your favorite home improvement store.

Teak is a naturally high oil wood and this preserves it from water, hence the use as a swim deck. (It takes two years laying around after they are cut for them to get light enough to float down a river to a mill) (OK, I know useless information)
You can only keep it fresh by reapplying oil. if you keep it covered from the elements it lasts much longer between oiling. If you don't oil the teak for several years you can still restore it but I'm assuming your concern is appearance in part.
You could sell it and use any other wood with a urathane coating but then it's slippery. Teak doesn't take paint or normal glues very well.

Never use a mineral oil.
