We are going to buy a 2012 boat at the end of the summer and I want a boat for wakebarding but my parants want a boat that don't thow a monster wake when they ar skiing, now comes my question wich one throws a monster wake and has a small wake at skiing speeds?
I was looking at Mastercrafts x2,x25 and x-star, know this ar wakeboard specific boats but I want to know more about the skiing wake, The same for air nautique 210 and 230.

Wich trows a monster wake with factory ballas?

Have you looked at the EPIC?

maybe a nautique 200? the 230 throws a monster wake just floating, dont get that if they ski.

The X2 is probably going to give you the best ski wake out of all of those but its also the smallest however out of all those boats I would look at the 210 or the X25. The 210 stock wake is great and have heard the 25 is better. Looking for my first pull behind one.

The boat will mostly be just for boarding, and we are open water slalom skiers

Best factory wakeboard wake is the axis, not a very good ski wake though

If you want a good all around boat go with the malibu VTX with the diamond hull. Decent factory wakeboard wake, very good ski wake at high speeds. If you sack her out you get a great wakeboard and surf wake.

do you have an option to test drive them?

X2, but its small. If your just open water skiing the X25 might be a better bet, but I have never skied behind one.

I have heard the SAN 210 throws a decent ski wake.

Sport Nautique 200 looks really good on video anyway.

I like to slalom and want to get into the course, but prefer a v-drive for a number of reasons. If I had the cash I'd probably get one of those since it looks like it can do everything decently enough. I'm not a hardcore boarder so maybe it's a bit more of a recreational/intermediate wake for that, but it would fit my bill while still looking to be one of the best v-drives for slalom that I've seen video of anyway.

Yes the new sport is pretty sweet have spent some time around one. Though slalom at 22'off i heard can be tough but other lengths r decent. The new sport that Im around is primarily used for the boarders & skaters bc theres another nautique used for slalom & jump. But the wake is decent for boarding with factory ballast. Not SAN style though.

X25 might be a better option in the Mastercraft flavor. My XStar throws a pretty decent wake even at ski speeds totally empty. I have never had anyone ski behind it but I wouldn't think it would be much fun.

Good luck on your search.

Buy an X-Star with the wake plate. Fully engaged it knocks the wake down pretty good.

None of the Sanger V drives are known for a great slalom wake. Barefooting, wakeskating and wakeboarding yes but not slalom.

Check the forums for MB. The water ski wake is not bad from what I see (never tried) and the changes they are making are HUGE. The wakeboard and surf wakes are huge stock. I am pretty sure they are cheaper than all of your boats that you mentioned.

The Nautique Sport 200 is the best crossover boat I have ever driven . I own a 210 surf and board wakes are great ski is doable for recreational skiing over 31mph.
Old     (polarbill)      Join Date: Jun 2003       08-02-2011, 3:08 PM Reply
I would do a VTX or VLX. Get the diamond hull on the VTX if you want a better ski wake or the wake hull if you want a better wakeboard wake. Get power wedge and quad ballast either way. They use to offer both hulls on the wakesetter. If that is still an option look at that as well if you want a slightly bigger boat. I don't know why people say the X2 or VTX are small. They aren't that small and either will hold 8 comfortably and 11 or 12 in a pinch.

The Nautique 230 is AWESOME! You get the best of all worlds...a world class wakeboard wake, yet when you empty ballast and put the hydrogate down it's a great ski wake. No matter what you do, get out and demo demo demo. The 230 was originally a cross-over boat, until they realized it had an fantastic wake, they then decided it was going to be their podium wakeboat. I'll say it again, no matter what you look at, be sure to DEMO!

Can't really slalom behind the X-25. X-15 and X-2 are the best all around boats in the Mastercraft line up.

Ummm.....my skier friends, and my daughter. would disagree. The new B52 TWB 23s have an even bigger ski wake than the older MB B52 V23s. We didn't buy them for skiing though.

The new wakeboard and surf wakes are really good.

33 mph "ski" wake 2011 B52 TWB 23:

p.s. "Best factory wakeboard wake is the axis" made me laugh out loud. This forum is off the hook humerous

Yes, they make the X14 and the X14v.

I'm actually surprised nobody has recommended the X14v. If you are at all serious about a really good ski wake, the X14v is the best crossover boat.

+1 on the VTX. We went round doing the same thing and testing out loads of crossover boats in 05. Ended up with a VLX but my parent's really couldn't ski behind it. Was out behind a VTX a while ago and the wake wasn't much different than our VLX. You can still get all the goodies like the power wedge and everything but then for skiing you have the sunsetter (i think) hull, which they use for ski boats.

My buddy has a MC X-14 V. It's a great slalom boat, handles well. We ski 28off, 34mph. I struggle at 22off behind the boat though, it's got quite a bit of kick at that length.

It also "in my oppinion" has a great boarding wake as well. Although we have to go around 26mph to clean the wake up with the ballast he has in it. I'm a 23mph max guy.

x2 on the X-14V

+1 for the X-14....its got a great ski wake. I can also attest for its wakeboard wake. I was at an event and we had about 14ppl in the boat and the wake was more than sufficient....although I would not put that many ppl in that boat haha....

The manufacturer who can figure out this puzzle is going to own a significant portion of the market. Maybe some sort of hydofoil boat would work.

#1 Sport Nautique 200 = best for both worlds, great lay out of a boat. Probably the best all around watersport boat for new boats on the market.
#2 2011 MC X1 = 2011 because they are stupid enough to discontinue it for 2012. Better wakeboard wake, but good hull for recreation slalom
#3 MC X14 = Good wakes for all, but the dumbest interior layout I've ever seen in a boat, just my opinion of course.
#4 Malibu VTX or Ride 21V = don't know too much about these, but Malibu deserves a mention, the wakes would be appropriate for both worlds.

One more vote for the 2011 MC X1 (205V), when we have no weight and cruising a ski speeds it is pretty darn flat.

I would go with the X-14v or the X-15. The 15 with the plate is a very good slalom boat and has a great surf wake along with a nice wakeboard wake. May need more ballast though for wakeboarding and surfing.

I have been fortunate enough to have ridden most all those wakes and I agree with above guy, def not an epic. Amazing riding wake but skiing and epics goes together like a Mormon guy and a strip club haha jk. But really tho I'd reccomend an x1 actually. If the parents are cool with you loading the heck out of it fill the ballast and put three 600s in it and the wake gets kickin (oh and I ride an old style San 210 loaded to the gills with weight). Other wise a new nautique 210 cuz the seating is def more spacious. But in riding conditions minimum ballast plus a 750 on the ground against the back and 500 up front plus your generally 5 people average...

nop, we even don't have a slalom course, the closed is about 40 miles away, with the car.

I went for a test drive 2 weeks ago on a x25, need to tell it handles verry good in verry choppy water, waves about 0.5-0.75 cm, the slalom wake is "flat" but verry hard with the adjustment plate down, wakeboardwake is nice clean and steep, with extra ballast in around 300kg.
This saterday we going to test a x2 but without the adustment plate :')

I'd say X-14 is a great pick.. X-star at 31mph is like hitting a wall and it's very wide......
Old     (polarbill)      Join Date: Jun 2003       08-23-2011, 12:54 PM Reply
If all they are doing is recreational skiing like that I would look at the X2, X15, VTX, VLX, SAN216 and a couple other boats. There is absolutely no reason they need a pro level slalom wake to cross the wake on 2 skis. That being said, if they are the ones spending the money they get to make the decisions.

I thought the xstar wake looked pretty flat at high speeds since it's such a ramp anyways but don't ask me I have never strapped a ski on in my life haha

someone mentioned axis, and I will say it's not the best wake to ski behind, but I can still run a slalom course skiing behind my a22, so free-skiing won't be bad, but you will def noticed the wake. I've never been behind a boat that's great to ski and wakeboard behind, whatever you do more of I would lean more towards a boat that will be better in one of them. I love my axis and think the wake is great, but your opinion will probably differ. like everyone says go and demo every boat you can, all the companies have something that is great. Just make sure you like what you're buying.
Old     (chattwake)      Join Date: Jan 2010       08-24-2011, 5:33 AM Reply
+1 for what Andrew said. You don't buy and Axis because you love to ski. It does throw a great wakeboard wake right out of the box. It is hard to say which boat throws the best factory wake. The A22, 230, 210, VLX, LSV, X25, X1 all thow really nice wakes with stock ballast.
Old     (ixfe)      Join Date: Aug 2008       08-24-2011, 6:57 AM Reply
I always think it's funny when people say "for recreational skiing" it's fine. What does that even mean? How do you define recreational skiing? If it means the skier doesn't plan to turn at all, then I agree, any boat is fine. Just stay in the middle of the wake. But most "recreational" skiers that I know like to turn some and cut in and out of the wake. For this type of skiing wakeboard boats are NOT good (mine included). Even at 30+ mph you have to contend with a good size bump as you cut across. I have never seen a wakeboard boat where that is not the case.

So just remember this... it is easier to get a decent wakeboard wake out of a ski boat then it is to get a decent ski wake out of a wakeboard boat.
