Prayers go out to Dowdy for a speedy discovery. He has the right attitude towards this injury. Great story he posted about it. Check it out

I can feel why mike has some anger, after winning the Jr. pro tour last year. Then this year he invented new ways to spin/flip and do multiple wake to wake double flips while showing it with amazing edits that got better each time. Then this happens, I would be pissed! Mike dowdy progressed the sport so much this last year probably more than anyone else. Can’t wait to see his section(s) in prime! And hope he comes back better than ever.

Here is a tribute to all his video edits from the past year. Simply amazing!

Kid absolutely rips, sucks to hear hes gonna be out for 6-8months. Honestly I was surprised it took this long for one of these young riders (harley, dowdy, steel etc) to get hurt. They've been raising the bar so high it just seemed like a matter of time.

good kid, has a good support system. He will be back stronger than before. bummed for him, but I do believe he will be back kicking arse soon enough.

given that I've just undergone surgery for mine, i feel his pain, and his fire. he will be back and he will be better, but it will take time.

i am also surprised it has taken this long to happen. wake boarding seems to be a fairly injury light sport in some respects, until of course water grabs your board incorrectly and you grenade your knee or end up with a concussion. these boosted wakes aren't helpful either.

i wonder if cable knee injuries are less prevalent? lower speeds etc...

I definitely think the scale of injuries are not as large on cable as behind boat.
Take a look at the number of top cable guys in knee braces, only one I can think of is Nick Davies and he blew his knee behind boat.

In some ways it's interesting that wakeboarding has so many knee injuries, to a point, the knee isn't allowed to pivot like a football player or soccer players is. It's that grabby characteristic of water that promotes varus/valgus stress and hyper extension. The good news is that varus valgus and hyper extension can be quelled to some degree by a good brace, while pivoting is a bit more iffy. The cable thing is interesting too because there's a lot of hard landings there.....

I think the cable's lower speed, predictability, and lift from the cable itself make it easier on the body.

I think it's less about cable/boat and more about what you do with your time on the water.
If you just go wake to wake, maybe having that cushion won't be as damaging to your knees.
If you're hitting a Unit XL kicker all day landing on flat, I think your knees are going to feel it.

There is a reason wakeboarders peak earlier on in life. Usual path is some sort of injury resulting in imperfect biomechanics. Now add 10-15 years of hard use that a wake athlete will put on his/her knees and all of a sudden you have someone in their early 40's who is missing a nickel size piece of articular cartilage on their femur. It would be interesting to follow the current crop of freestyle skiers, high level wakeboarders, etc. and see what their spines and knees look like at 40 yrs of age. My guess is that they will look like the knees and backs of all the paratroopers I see. Hopefully by then we will have a good and resilient cartilage replacement that a surgeon can just "slap" on.
