Florida=sand and tough for two wheelers.

I have a dirt bike dilemma. Son 13 and son 11 are sharing an old (but good) XR-80. Son 11 wants a quad and will sell his kart to help fund it.
Son 13 is soon going to move up to a faster bike and doesn't want a quad.
So son 11 is skill-wise over the 80cc automatics but not quite ready for the 200cc shifters. He only weighs about 85 lbs.
Is there something in the middle I dont know about? Our budget precludes mulit thousand dollar race bikes and will be shopping CL for a deal. It has to be a big-four brand but I dont really care which one.

Im looking for a model type so as to make my search easier. ATV as a search term is a bit broad.
Thanks.

Son 13 is going to get way more girls than son 11.

I've found dirt bikes to be superior on every terrain, even sand. Although on smaller bikes, I can see how it would be tougher in the sand with less power and less wheel. I'd try to avoid the Quad route if possible. They're less versatile, harder to transport, and more dangerous in my opinion.

That sounds like a tough situation. Are they able to stand over a full size bike?

Son 13 also has a few inverts and drives the Nautique. Prettiest girls in middle school are already on the boat. So.. yeah, hes doing OK but remember that son 11 is a starting quarterback and has a dimple so things may level off. LOL.

Quads are a pain, Ill have to get a trailer etc etc. But I can fit 3 bikes in my truck bed.. no trailer.
Maybe ill work on him a bit more.
Rod are you familiar with the sand we have here? It is soft, deep and fluffy and will tank slap your azz if you take your eyes off it for a second. The big bore thumpers do very well but a smaller wheeled bike struggles. I rode a CR85 and big wheel CR85 on the track and the difference was amazing how much easier the larger wheels handled the sand. Both boys will never play pro hoops and are years away from a full size frame.
Thanks.

I rarely post here, but feel compelled to on this one.

Please do yourself a favor and stay away from quads. I love dirt bikes and know you can get hurt on one, but quads have a much higher incidence of neck injuries. Had a good friend break neck and die from what would have been a minor accident on a moto.

hahaha Awesome! Sounds like they'll both do fine.

I've ridden bikes a lot at pismo beach. It's deep, soft beach sand. I agree, the thumpers have a far less noticeable loss of power and can be ridden a little more lazy.
The deep sand eats up 2 stroke pistons fast.

Tough call. For little guys in the sand, options are limited.
