Rusty landed 2 1080's at the WakeJam comp this weekend in Winter Haven. He landed them like it was nothing, sooooo clean it was crazy.
Bob Soven also landed his new trick the "Trifecta" 2 front flips with a 180 in the finals. It was an awesome weekend in Wakeboard history for sure.

With all that going down, what did Nick do to garner the win? From Twitter last night:

Wake Jam Results! 1st: Nick Galotifiore 2nd: Aaron Rathy 3rd: Rusty Malinoski 4th: Bob Soven

The trifecta (his 1st one @ chad sharpe's) is on chad's blog.... if you just want to see the trick, but I don't think a video of the trick done in the comp has been posted yet

Rusty's 1080 was perfect on Sunday just in the wrong round though....I take that back it was his last DUP and he did it to advance to finals, Bob's double front roll to revert was perfect, but he didn't hit it later Nick was consistent with a really big 900 as was Rathy, all in all very impressive riding and a fun time. WH has some strong roots in wake and it was great to see Parks, show up to his home turf, hoping this continues in the area, there are a bunch of great riders here!

Wow the first part of that "Trifecta" (why the hell is it called that?) looks fake. The spinning looks like one of those edited videos that has been sped up to get the trick finished in time.
Old    murrayair            10-26-2009, 5:22 PM Reply
The term "Trifecta" probably refers to the 3 tricks it's made up of: 2 TS front rolls and a 180. That's my guess. Although, the name would be more accurate if it was made up of three completely different tricks. Whatever it's called, it's awesome!

I love the "Trifecta" as a trick, but is it just me or have all the cool trick names been taken?

I mean it doesnt evoke the same feeling as the speedball, pete rose, Vulcan or any of the other classic trick names does it.

Not hating at all, just an observation that I havent heard a new trick named something good for what seems a long time.
Old     (captain_vilfo)      Join Date: Apr 2007       10-26-2009, 7:36 PM Reply
honestly the double front roll to revert is one of the coolest tricks ive seen but it seems bob soven gives his tricks stupid names. Ex: Trifecta, Billion Dollar Baby? I know he landed them and deserved it and im no where near good enough to "hate" but still those names suck!

I also realize theres a trick called the million dollar baby so the billion is an add on or whatever, Im just saying if I was out on the boat with someone and said OMG he just landed a billion dollar baby they'd probably look at me like I was gay.
Old     (tom_paz)      Join Date: Jan 2003       10-26-2009, 11:04 PM Reply
plus i could have sworn that the "billion dollar baby" tantrum to f/s 3 was originally landed quite a while back (like 96-00ish) by Brandon Meek and thought he named it the moby **** (opposite of moby dick, get it).

it a dope trick, tough to do, but i dont think that you should get to re-name it if its been done before. i think the trifecta is first-ever, so by all means name away on that one.

Rusty's 1080's are becoming effortless looking.

billion dollar baby, trifecta... I don't know why but just thinking of those names as wakeboard trick names just makes me laugh. These are the kind of names I think only Bob Soven would have came up with and I'm glad he did.

Am I the only one that thinks this bat wing 2 blind with a huge solid grab looks as good as any 1080 or double flip? Just sayin'

yeah the batwing looks just as good i think the point is its a contest, and the riders are out there to land the hardest things they can to out perform other riders.
i might be wrong but i'm willing to bet that there's alot more riders out there that can go do a huge batwing off the DUP that looks SICK but not so many that can land double fronts, 1080's and 9's when the pressure is on.
congrats Rusty on pushing the sport, and soven for seeming to come out of nowhere this year and absolutely kill it.
as cool as it would be to see 15 people all land a glide or a BS 180 to the flats we've seen all those things done 100's of times before. Two 1080's in 1 contest? thats new.

I just posted a video with a couple tricks from the weekend. Both Rusty's 1080's and Bob's Double Scarecrow are on there.

Thanks

It wasn't even the ts 10 that gave Rusty the 3rd place... but the ts 9?

I'm confused how the results ended up the way they did... Was it like a knockout contest and maybe those were the last moves that were landed in finals?
Old     (trevorhansen)      Join Date: Mar 2005       10-27-2009, 6:28 PM Reply
Just to clarify. It was a 3 round contest. Each round you had to place in the top 2 to advance to the next round. Every round you start fresh no trick that you landed in the previous round counted towards your end result.

If you had to finish in the top 2 to advance and it is a 3 round event..... would'nt there only be two riders to advance to the second round therefore the same two riders to the final round? Confused...

Gene - venture to say there were multiple heats.

I think one of the biggest surprises of the competition was the somewhat "Unknown" Jr rider, Nick Galotifiore
winning the event. My hat goes off to him for the win. Who would of thought he had a chance to win an event that had 2 1080s and Sovens new trick the "Trifecta" (double front to blind) landed in the same comp?

Great job Nick !!

Did this event benefit Cypress Gardens at all? If not they should throw another one in it's honor.

from what i heard the thing that put Nick G ahead or Rathy in the finals was that he did a nose grab 900 and Rathy did an ungrabed 900. Sounded like an awesome event and im with Billy, hats off to Nick G for coming through in the clutch against the sports best. I'd watch for Nick next year in Jr Mens, the kid learns fast.
