your sure your not looking for a desiel? i would go 05-06. 04 had to man issues imo. i had an 05 and its was great. 6.0 desiel. only issue i had with mine was a high pressure oil pump witch was fixed for 06. i have a 08 with a 6.4 and its great, smooth and powerful but im really considering going back to an 05-06. personally i would go 7.3 but there hard to fine with low miles and in good condition.

My buddy has a 5.4 superduty and it pulls ok but nothing like a deisel and it uses a lot of gas.The v10 is the same way, just uses too much gas.
I would take bryans advice and look for a 05-06 or a 99-03.Problem with the 99-03 is nobody wants to sell them and if they do in general they are pretty ruff.
Why would you need the 4x4?Most people never even turn it on.

I have an '04 F250 Superduty with the 5.4. I've never had any problems with it, but wished I had the diesel. I only picked it up because I got a great deal with only 1200 miles on it. Pulls my Supra okay which comes in around 4600 lbs I think with the trailer. I only get around 8.2 miles per gallon towing though.

Brock, I assume the 4X4 is for the netherlands weather. (awesome car in your profile).

I too would look into an 05-07 6.0 diesel.

I dont know your budget or options preferred, but this is a sweet truck.

Mileage is going to be low with all choices doing city driving, but towing on the highway, the diesel is the winner.

That's a decent deal on that truck, but that's a hella lot of miles for a 07. I've been looking for about a month for and 06 or 07. Still looking...

diesel is $6.20 a gallon so i would rather convert a gas engine to LPG like i do on most wakeboard boats.I can only spend about 20k.
The rest of my budget is for transport taxes and a title.
But if diesel is the way to go i just might buy a diesel.Any info about gasmileage of the 6.0 diesel? It,s a company car anyway so fuel is partially deductible.

there is one for sale over here 2002 v10 CC Longbox cloth xlt very basic car problem it has already 140K miles, should i stay away from that one?
I want to use the car for a few years so where should i draw the line at the miles?..75000?
i,m driving about 22000 a year.

thanx for the info guys.

Don't get the 6.0 diesel. Mine is currently in the shop for the 4th time in 4 months My buddies 2005 6.0 is also in the shop for the 5th time in 4 months. Get the Gas motor convert it to LPG and you will have no problems. I have had EGR cooler, fuel filter, turbo flap and turbo replaced also all the injectors and now another turbo. Truck has never been chipped and is very well taken care of. Cant wait for the new 6.7 diesel so I can dump this thing before the extended warranty goes out.

I have an 07' F-150 and our shop has an 04'(?) F-250 both with the 5.4 liter. So far no issues on either, my 150 gets about 14 mpg on gas and I use it to tow everything from an X-1 to an X-45, we used the 250 to pull an X-30 from TN to MN but I don't think we've ever checked the mpgs.

We drive approx 30,000 miles a year, the majority as highway non towing miles, in our F350 Crew Cab. Had a 2004 with the 6.0L diesel in it average approx 18 mpg. Switched to a 2006 with the 6.0L diesel in it averaged aprox 15 mpg. Added exhaust, intake, and programmer set at fuel economy averaged approx 17 mpg. Currently have a 2008 with the V10 averaging approx 14 mpg. MPG averages are what the onboard computer/information center said.

I've got a late 03 with the 6.0 and have got 91,000 miles with no real issues. 4in lift, oversized tires, edge chip, air intake, and exhaust. Hwy avg is around 18-19 mpg. The power is nice, but I don't like the extra maintaince costs that come with the desiel. Had the 5.4 in a 99 superduty and it was a dog. I also had a 02 with the V10 and it had decent power, but the mpg was absolutely terrible.

You might also consider a GM 3/4 ton with the 8.1 liter. Yeah, they suck gas, but if you are going to convert it to LPG it doesn't matter.

I have 187,000 miles on my 2001 8.1 liter, and have had not one problem with it, and it runs like the day I bought it.

Who's going to work on a 6.0 where you live? You better have a good mechanic on standby with lots of parts.

Anyone can work on gas motor.

Not sure how cold it gets in the winter, but that may be a consideration, too. Diesels are cold blooded. They take a long time to warm up and like block heaters in sub freezing climates.

Just something to think about.

I love my Diesel, but it's warm here and I rarely drive it on short trips.

I average about 16.5 MPG all the time. That's in town, towing and on highway. It goes to 18-19 on the highway and stays around 16 in town. Towing depends on hills. Usually between 11 and 15.

I agree about diesel mechanics. You need a good one, or you'll have nothing but problems.

I got an 01 F-150 5.4L Supercrew 4x4 back in 03' with 37,000 miles on it. I am now up to 112,000 with no major problems and have been towing boats for all of those 6 years. It will be paid off next month and I plan on running it till 200,000 miles minimum while towing.

MPG-around town 14-16 towing 8-10.

Cool... should be a good choice.

Kevin, I'm not sure I follow. The diesels have more known problems and are harder to work on. I would recomend having a good diesel mechanic close by if you own one. What's your point?

The mod motors (4.6, 5.4) last a long time but are fairly torqueless. The first couple years of the new diesels were problematic with head gaskets and other failures.

If I was in the market for a new truck I'd go with anything with a 460 or 7.3, preferably 7.3 for towing. They're proven engines that'll go a solid 500k without major failure. Personally I wouldn't mess with the new diesels nd the 5.4 is worthless for real towing duty.

Price of diesel in the Netherlands $6.20 a gallon

NOT SO PERFECT.

it,s more the lack of a good mechanic, there is a shop specialized in f150 and 250,s but not near by.I thought a 5.4 would do just fine,i,m not hauling a fith wheel or something just a few boats a week, and only for short distances.maximum would be a 1,5 hour drive with a x-45 or supra ssv and occasionally an bayliner cierra.here in the netherlands we don,t have mountains or big hills to climb.I guess the steepest would be the boat ramp,..lol.But most boat ramps are short and steep.
i,m going for a gas engine,so if anybody have some experience with a v10 or 5.4 and could explane the difference between both performance wise,i would really appreciate theat.I guess it,s not even necessary to have a 4x4,that would just be for the fun part of it(if i could find some spare time).
Old     (jetskiprosx)      Join Date: Aug 2004       10-29-2009, 12:54 PM Reply
I'm not going to bash Ford, but the 5.4 in a 3/4 ton truck is just too small IMO. The 5.4 was the single biggest turn off for me with the f-150. The 5.4 puts out just over 300HP. The 5.7 iForce is 380ish, 5.7 Hemi is 390, 6.2 Vortec is 400..

If I were to get a f-250 the only two engines I would choose would be the 6.8 or diesel

Okay scratch the diesel idea given the rpice of diesel where you live. Keep in mind though a 7.3 towing 5000-6000 lbs should get twice the MPG of a 460 towing the same weight, and better MPG unloaded too.

The 5.4 will so what you need, but it won't be fun towing a fairly heavy wake boat with a 5.4. My truck used to have a 351 (5.8), and the higher output 351 at that and it was pretty much pedal to the metal pulling my boat. I built a 460 rated around 400 HP and 550 ft/lbs and it tows just fine (6000 lbs truck 4500 lbs boat+trailer). I'm happy with the performance of my 460 but the MPG isn't great. Around 12.5 highway unloaded, and never measured with the boat since I almost always go to local ramps (8-10 miles).

I've driven 5.4 trucks and they are dissappointing unloaded, I'd hate to see what they do loaded. I also towed my boat once with a 4.6... Wow, that was pretty weak, far worse than the 351 I used to tow with.

If I were you, restricted to gas, I'd be looking at '80-'97 F-250 with 460. The newer trucks you ahve to get a diesel to be worth it and the diesels are so darned expensive and aren't as reliable as the tried and true 7.3 anyhow.
Old     (dudeman)      Join Date: Mar 2005       10-29-2009, 5:42 PM Reply
Ben, if you don't have big hills or mountains to climb and you can get a 5.4 cheap, I'd say go for it, IMO. Is it a hoss, no. Can you take off from a dead stop and accelerate like you're in a race,no. But it's not as much of a weak dick pig that some here are making it out to be. When it all comes down to it, I think if you can get a 5.4 at a good price, you'll be fine.
Old     (dudeman)      Join Date: Mar 2005       10-29-2009, 5:43 PM Reply
Oh yeah, and that's my 2000th post. That should be good for something, I hope.
Old     (cadunkle)      Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: NJ       10-29-2009, 5:50 PM Reply
I would also avoid the V10, I'd sooner get a 5.4 if that's what the choices were. The V10 is underpowered and a gas guzzler compared to the 460.
Old     (chasenm)      Join Date: Jul 2009       10-30-2009, 5:46 PM Reply
I would just go back a few years and get a 2002 with the 7.3 diesel, you'll be much happier...

Ben,

I have a 2008 f350 crew cab that has the V10 and a 2009 f150 with the 5.4l. Both have towed my Supra 21v with no problems what so ever. You do notice the boat more behind the f150 then you do the f350. But there isn't enough difference in my opinion holding out for a v10 to become available if you find a 5.4 that you like. And for you since you're not going up and down hills the 5.4 wiill just fine.

Gas mileage for the 5.4 non towing for me is approx 14.5, towing is 11.5. The V10 non towing is approx 14, towing is approx 11.

I don't remember the year for sure but I'm thinking it was 2006 that ford changed the v10 engine slightly which improved it's gas mileage from the previous years.

Ben,

A 5.4L F150 will do the job just fine for your application. Even a 4.6L would suffice "powerwise" for the conditions you have described.

The horsepower difference between the 4.6L and the 5.4L wont be the issue for the conditions you have described. The difference between the two packages in an F150 are the rear differential. The 4.6L has an 8.8" rear end and the 5.4L has a 9.75". If your towing alot then opt for the 5.4L.
Not for the power, but for the drivetrain.

Anything more than an F150 for your application is overkill.
