My daughter is 6 and I have never pushed wakeboarding on her. Last year she got up a few times, but this year she has hit it like a maniac. Even though she is getting more and more comfortable on her own, I still let her take at least one stand between my legs every time out and we carve around and do one wake jumps (she does the grabs) at 22.2mph. The reason is the speed. She rides at 12-13mph right now, but to start wake to wake on a 55ft line she will need to go about 18.
Watertime early is crucial for mastery. And don't limit your kids to just wakeboard or surfing. Make sure they try skis, trickski, kneeboard, barefoot, cable, etc. Most of the best wakeboarders in the world have a multi-sport background.
