Its a fairly simple install into a car. But I've never done a boat so not sure if I can help you. All you are doing is hooking up the push button to the ignition wires. I would say keep the key involved.

Do you want keypad or just push button?

Mercruiser do an aftermarket kit to add which has a keypad.... similar to the Nautique system. I bet you coudl transfer it between different brands its only electrics after all - Might be worth checking out.

I have a keypad from mercruiser. Bought it from west marine for like 100 dollars. Works great. Very easy to install. I was able to utilize the existing hole for the keyed ignition. Drilled two more holes for mounting screws for the keypad, then there is a "brain" that is hidden behind my dash that I have two more mounting screws. The system is great. I can lock it down and then it requires my 4 digit passcode in order for it to work. Hitting the "run" button is like putting the key in the on position then just hold down the "start" button just as if you were turning your key over. Hit stop to shut it off. Then to lock the keypad, just like you were taking the key out, put in your passcode and hit stop and it locks that bad boy down. Here are some pics. Let me know if you have any installation questions.
