What type of epoxy do you recommend for filling holes. Looking to fill the holes on the transom from the speedo tubes. Thanks.....

It takes 7 days to cure but I like the 5200. 4200 is a faster cure. http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...4314622&rt=rud

I didn't realize 5200 had a fast cure until I saw my own post.

If you dip your finger in a mixture of dawn detergent and water before applying it, you can get a smoother finish.

Thanks for the help. My plan is to use fiberglass on the inside of the hull. Then fill the holes with 5200 and then use the spectrum patch paste kit to finish the exterior gel coat. Should that work??

What color is the gel?

Unless the holes are really big fiberglassing the inside isn't really necessary.

The gel is white, and the hole size is about 1/4".........

Marine Tex is made for this purpose. You'll have trouble finding the repair afterward if it's done well...and it's not difficult to do. There won't be any need to put gel coat over it.

5200 is more of an adhesive although it adheres so well it also serves the purpose of sealing. It can be a little more difficult to work with since it's so sticky. It will cure a little more flexible. Not sure if you can put gel coat over it.

If you really want to go the gel coat route you'd be better off mixing fiberglass & resin and filling the hole. Once that cures do the gel coat. Unless your boat is showroom condition that's probably more effort than is necessary.

Make a small test panel (preferably fiberglass) and drill some 1/4" holes in it and test both 4200 and the Marine Tex to see what ya like best. I have used both a lot over the years and both have pros and cons. For 1/4" holes the 4200 would be fine. You can get small tubes for $12-16 Don't over think it. It's not a 1" hole. If ya use the 4200 fast cure get some of it in holes and like mentioned some dish soap for last touches for smooth finish of the hole.
