Taking a buddy out to try surfing. He's 6'4" and pushing 280 to 300. Two biggest boards I have are the broadcast and happy pill. Will I be okay or should I explore options on a bigger board?

Depends on the size on each of those. In my experience big guys are not too much different than teaching others. Some get it right away, others just get all sorts of wonky trying to get up with the board all over the place. If they are the wonky type, a neutral buoyancy style board is best.
