We have an '02 SAN, and we're pretty new to surfing. Went out on the lake over the weekend with 7 in the boat, and the rear ballast full (I don't have side to side ballast control, and I'm not sure if I risk damaging the pumps by cutting off one side).

Anyway, here's the deal...with everyone loading up one side of the boat, we're going at about 11.5 mph, and we find that we get the best wake with the boat turning in a large circle. Is this how it should be? One of the issues is that I feel like the sweet spot is somewhat smaller when turning, and also that it's got me practically right up against the swim platform.

Is it just that we don't have enough weight in the boat for a good wave going straight, or are we doing something wrong?

Yeah, I think you're right in that you don't have nearly enough weight on the surf side of the boat for driving straight. So when you are turning, the boat lists more, and the wave gets bigger.
