I have a strict $30k budget, I would like a 21-23' boat. My priorities are roominess, storage, the ability to create a great surf wake without having to have bags lying all over the boat.

Any suggestions? I was thinking of an older MC x10 or x30, but don't know about any of the other boats out there.

Thanks!!

My first inboard was a '99 Maristar 210 (same as the X10) I was very happy with it. I have never been in the old x30, but always heard they handled horrible.

If you want a true surf boat for that kind of money, to me, the choice is clear. Centurion Avalanche

for wakesurfing specifically? A Centurion Avalanche, hands down.

I forget what year they switched, but the C4 is preferred to the Walkthrough, for obvious reasons. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot of difference.

I was looking for the same thing and got a 2005 MC X10. The person that owned it before me took out the factory ballast tanks on each side of the engine and replaced them with 700 lb sacs. I love it and it puts out a solid surf wake. I have to admit that I did pick up an extra 540 lb fat sac to have in the boat when I want to alter the surf wake longer or taller, but don't always use it.

Dont rule out the 21V Supra or the Gravity Games edition SSV. Both have great wakes and surf wakes.

2006 210 will make a good surf wave both sides (not great) but you have to get some good lean to it and the weight placement is critical, too little and nothing too much and washed out.
Old     (DenverRider)      Join Date: Feb 2013       08-01-2013, 9:17 AM Reply
2006 210 would be an awesome choice if you could get it in good shape for 30K. The problem is that for 30 you're probably looking at a 2003 or older. If you find a 2006 for 30K and it's not thrashed then you buy it even if it's not the boat you want because you could resell it for 37 all day long.

We just traded in our 2006 Centurion Avalanche. It threw up a massive wake. The avalanche is without a doubt the best and highest quality boat that you could find under 30

what is the difference between a C4 and an avalanche? elite? what about the trim plate? a lot of them have fixed position plates. are these okay? or should you switch out for a real trim plate?

fixed plate shouldn't be a problem, though the hydraulic plate is preferred. The Elite V C4 is the same hull design, just a bit smaller.

A C4 Avalanche and a non-C4 avalanche have the same hull (from rub-rail down), but the older non-c4 avalanche had a walkthrough transom which cuts out a significant amount of wraparound seating as well as precious space for ballast on the starboard side.

Guys! I'm in the same situation but with a twist... I get to ride behind an sick Avy pretty much when ever I want so I want something different, just as good but different. I figured rather thank start a new thread I could just latch onto this one. Some things I would like are as follows... I would like the boat to be somewhat equipt (perfect pass, Ballast, trim tab, stereo, heater etc.) and at or under 30k I would like it to fit under my 7ft garage door (wont kill the deal but it would be nice) and it has to have a kick ass wave without giving up all my interior I know a sack here and there may be needed but I can do more than two visible sacks and at that point I would rather add lead... here are my thoughts so far

Sanger V-215, wave looks killer but never ridden it though, doesnt seem to need a ton of weight, boat will fit in my garage, most used models come with tons of options (ballast, PP, trim tab) the low freeboard thing won't really bother me the boat we ride now is slammed so I know how to handle it.

MB sports 220V or B-52, Ive ridden a new MB and it was awesome! but how do these older boats compare? models seem to come with some option (ballast, pp) but to add more ballast means starting over almost and additional gate ballast isn't gonna happen. I prefer the 220V over the b-52 mainly due to the gel, and interior options. who rides these boats and what do you think and how much ballast are you stacking in there.

Centurion Cyclone (03 or newer) or Elite-V (06 or newer) I know they are both capable I know what James-Z can do, I cant go that far. The used centurions seem to come the least equipped not even temp and depth gauges on a lot of boats. I dont know how I feel about the merc 350 MPI, The older towered boats will fit in my garage I think. can I find one in these years and equip it with all the surf goodies for less than 30?

Tige 20v 21v 22v, these boats are rare in my area so I know nothing about them, the interwebs say they are awesome though. Ive seen a few and no way would they fit in my garage, almost none of the used boats have ballast. and if one pops up in my hood they are usally over 30k

older supreme??? I know nothing about them except they are cheap and abundant (is that good or bad) there isn't a ton said about them. I was impressed with the 226's I've ridden and if I had money there would be one in my driveway, quality seemed good but does that say anything about the older models 208, 212, 220, 232?

What did I miss?

Ha! Ive seen all these boats, I just want to make the most informed choice.. H20, those guys have a clean supreme too Ive never seen a v230 surf but Frank digs his.. I know nothing about them I don't think I could just show up with some sacks and ask to surf it but maybe I could... as for the walk through Escalade I have an idea for one of those and it wouldn't bother me at all cause a surf rack and cooler would be just fine there but its still an avy... That 215 looks like a deal I e-mailed for some photos... if you guys have knowledge of how these boats that what I want to know, I can surf the list with the best of them to hunt one down...

"how these boats surf" mainly compared to the Avy. I guess I forgot to check my grammar last night.

I've got a Sanger V230 (2006) and we're just getting into surfing. It came with factory ballast (Wake Series) but only 250 in each rear locker. I swapped out the hard tank in my port rear locker for an 1100# bag (direct plug and play), so it fills/drains with the factory switches. Took a little over an hour or so to do the swap. It's probably not the best surf wave out there - but it certainly does work. We're still getting it dialed in - but here are a few pics of our surf wave from this summer . . . There's probably only 500#-750# in our locker - still haven't filled it all the way yet.

Oh - and we picked up this boat last year for well under 30K - only had 80 hours on it. The V230 is a really roomy inside. Sangers are really popular here in California - built in Fresno.

That looks workable, Ive seen 230's for cheaper than most 215's looking at the height of the season probably doesn't help.

You likely see V230's "cheaper" because Sanger stopped making them a couple of years ago - instead relying solely on the V237 for their "big" boat.

I think more folks are drawn to the V215 and V237 - because those boats are the "new" lineup.

I've got a friend with a V215 and it is a nice boat - and puts out a nice wake. It's smaller - but the kids are fine surfing behind my boat or his - I don't think there's a big difference (except when he loads his with more weight).

I prefer the V230 because it's got a bit more room (longer and wider) - everyone's comfortable and no one's stepping over anyone else. I've got a boat garage to store it in (10' tall door) - so I didn't need to worry about the size of the complete rig - fits in my garage fine without folding the tower, etc.

not sure if the length or beam of the boat is an issue to you - just something to think about, I guess.

My boat also has the adjustable Bennett trim tab - which is really great to have when heading across the lake . . .

Another vote here for the Sanger line! You'll get more bang for your buck with a Sanger. Not the flashiest or fanciest boats on the water, but well built, reliable, and produce great wakes. We have a V230 and with weight it produces a nice wave with a long pocket.

It's much easier to get a good surf wake out of that boat then wakeboard wake. It likes weight up in the bow for wakeboarding. For surfing, just load up one side and you're set.

It's already got perfect pass and it has the black scorpion motor - I don't think that 2002 has it. I think the V230s need at least the black scorpion. End of season - should be able to pick that 2005 up for closer to 25k (less if high hours). Just my opinion though . . .

The best wake I've ever been on was an '04 Tige 22v. Absolutely perfect shape. He had a couple thousand pounds it, a re-profiled swim platform with a big flap and FAE. I ride an old 56" Walzer and I'm 6' 200#. We were approaching 14mph on a speed run before I fell out which was my mistake. I think with a nice surf style board you could surf that boat at 14mph all day long if you wanted which speaks volumes about the lift of that shape. At 11mph it's a dream wake.

My next favorite is the Supreme 226. It's super easy to get a pro level wake out of. I was out riding with the Walkers a few months ago and we did another speed run and I got up to 14mph on a new to me skim. At 11mph it is a thing of beauty.

If I was going to build a surf boat, I would find a Tige 22v for cheap and gut it. I'd relocate the batts and taps pump behind the motor. Pull the floors out of the lockers and have MLA order up some custom sacs that run up under the side seats and hook them up to some of those giant Rule pumps that Duffy runs. I would also look very hard at Duffy's sac designs. I would also fill in the walkway in the bow with ballast as well as custom sacs under the front seats

Next would be a new interior with cut outs in the sides for cup holders and what not. A back rest for the starboard side behind the driver and a new playpen style bow.

Next would be re-profiling the swim platform and adding an FAE and a mudflap.

The correct ACME prop, stereo of choice and a Samson Razor to cap it off.

That would be a badazz surf machine.

The Tige 24v is right there as well lots of them for sale right now.
