....according to the bleacher report.

a friend of mine sent me this on facebook. i have no idea where it came from, but the guy seems to be pretty current and pretty much right on.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/264838-top-10-gnarliest-tricks-to-go-down-in-wakeboarding

If ten is the least gnarliest and one most gnarliest, then this guy has no clue. How is a Half Cab Double Roll better than a Double Back Mobe? And why even include tricks like the Hoochie Glide, Pete Rose and all the air tricks?
This one's a fail in my books.

i saw hoochie as first trick and quit reading it

I think that you guys are missing the point. When Gator invented the Hoochie, it was well ahead of anything that was being done then. The same can be said about the Pete when Byerly thought of it. Those tricks were unheard of then, but by today's standards, they are run of the mill.

He is looking at the entire history, not just present day.....think beyond present day.

Gnarliest trick list pretty cool. but i would change two things

- How is a Half Cab Double Roll better than a Double Back Mobe?
- Air tricks???? replace with Byerly doing the first 720 (that was such a harder trick to crack back in the day, i just remember it as the miracle trick for the pros)

Adam - Maybe because it came first? Who knows. Obviously doing the double cab roll opened the door for doing the double back mobe.

I thought it was a cool list and look at some wakeboarding history.

I agree that list isn't the top 10...how about some people compiling a top 10 that's for real. The Wakeworld Top 10 list?!
Old    dperizzolo            10-06-2009, 9:34 AM Reply
I think it will end up being a top 20 or more list ha ha. There are so many tricks that seem pivotal in the way wakeboarding was shaped and what we see today.

I agree. My only problem with the list is the list of spins (WTF is 1080 in a competition, then followed by 1st 1080???). Gnarliest to me means picking epic tricks which were notable at the time. Not just a list of the hardest tricks presently known.

...its better than the list I didn't assemble and even if I had, I probably wouldn't have embedded the youtube videos...thanks for the link.
This is not meant to disregard the discussion of the merits of the list, just that it sometimes turns into an exercise in futility (why not the first invert? first w2w? Osmosis?).
Old     (xbones)      Join Date: Mar 2007       10-06-2009, 10:09 AM Reply
My top 8:

1. Double Back Mobe
2. 1260
3. BS 1080
4. W2W 1080
5. Wrapped Toe Back 900
6. Speed Ball
7. Double Cab Roll
8. 1080 D-up
Old     (kamighazi)      Join Date: Nov 2008       10-06-2009, 11:04 AM Reply
that list had a lot of double rotations and zero mention of Chad Sharp and his double toe back, that no one else has done? WTF?

also, in my book, anything Osmosis should be on that list
Old     (sidekicknicholas)      Join Date: Mar 2007       10-06-2009, 11:12 AM Reply
1. 1260
2. dbl Mobe
3. BS 1080
4. W2W 1080
5. double whirly
6. Crow 7
7. Dbl Toe Backroll
8. OSmosis 7
9. 009
10. TS back 9

The only flaw I see is that the title is "The 10 Gnarliest Tricks in Wakeboarding" and it seems that a few of them are more influential rather than gnarley. For instance, a Pete or hoochie aren't the gnarliest things to see nowadays, but they were very influential.

...and Watson wasn't the first rider to hit a 900 in a comp. Steve Edwards has that honor.

Ummm...where is this TS BS 9?
Old     (anthemwake)      Join Date: Oct 2005       10-06-2009, 12:01 PM Reply
Watson hit the first 9 in a contest off the double up, some contest in Germany maybe? Steve Edwards hit the first one wake to wake in a contest.

sorry for the hijack
I admit that spinning a 1080 or sh^@54t a 720 is gnarly, but why I repeat why is spinning considered a cool trick once u get past a 540 all style is lost most people look ridiculous trying to huck out these giant spins IMO...

Adam "why even include all the air tricks"

Have you ever tried an air trick in the flats? Do you realize how difficult that is? I think air tricks are very impressive and even more so that barely anyone knows how to do them.
Old     (eternalshadow)      Join Date: Nov 2001       10-06-2009, 12:45 PM Reply
It's not horrible, the reading info and everything add to the list. I mean sure there's a few tricks I would add/remove but overall I think it was a well done idea. It has some education behind it. I might agree with the idea of title being changed but it serves a purpose too.

You cannot argue with a raley based trick as being gnarly. No matter how tech some of the other tricks are, the average person who isn't educated in wakeboarding still looks at a superman thinking it's cooler than a 10.

I have to drop a vote for an orbital 5.

kgb5? 313? s-bend, blind-judge?

i feel that any invert/spin done on a skurfer is gnarly!!

This IMO is the essence of making a list like this. Most people wouldn't even notice the different between a 1080 and a BS 1080. Most people wouldn't know a 7 from a 9 from a 10 without counting the rotations.

Sorry, I meant Danny HS Back 9, donno if there has been a TS back 9... but I assume we would have heard if it did happen

I thought it was very well done. Yeah you may have a different opinion, but the guy has his own opinion too and those were the tricks he considered the gnarliest (some of which had to do with the time they were done)

But I'll just throw my 2 cents out with only knowing the sport as long as I have

1. bs 10
2. 1260
3. double mobe
4. w2w 10
5. fs 10
6. double half cab roll
7. speedball
8. hs bs 9
9. pete rose 7
10. wake to rail gap

and after saying those 10...its amazing how hard it is to leave out... 009, osmosis 7, crow mobe 7, kgb 5, fountain gap, seadoo gap, w2w ts bs 7, toeside double backroll, ts bs 9 on cable, wrapped grab heel 9, moby dick 7, ect.

Pretty cool list. Very valid. I may not agree with all of them but agree with where he is coming from. How the sport progressed and you can only use 10 of them. I don't get the 2 tens though. One in a contest and the first documented. Pick one. Personally- Fashion AIr

My list in no particular order (way to hard for me to decide)

Indy Tantrum to Blind
313
Osmosis anything
Whirly Dick
1260
BS 10
Double Back Mobe
Bee Sting
Speedball
Orbital anything.

There are a tone more. If I made the list again tomorrow, it would be different.

I think Shapiros Iron Cross Should be in there! That is insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can get the 2 10s, because though it may be the same trick (10 years ago was the holy grail... and kind of still is)... throwing it in a contest was a huge step in the right direction for the sport and that move...

this is the only way I see the double half cab roll beating the double mobe... the double half cab roll was thrown rediculously smooth and consistently in contests.

but thats just my 2 cents

If we are going off of tricks that were stuck clean then I vote for chads double indy ts backroll. That was clean!!!

off topic but why the hell doesnt byerly wakeboard? doesnt seem to be anything special on a skate?
Old     (dirwoody)      Join Date: Apr 2003       10-07-2009, 5:46 AM Reply
I'd definately have to include the indy double backroll, oo9, S Bend, orbitals, the wake to rail gap, and more than just a trick, but when murray and Byerley (I think that's right) stuck the first 7's for the first time on a powell trip in back to back sets

I thought that it was interesting that nobody but Nick had mentioned the 009 .....
Seems that politics is alive and well in wakeboarding as well as every other part of life.

I agree with John. That list was mislabeled. Most influential, maybe. Not all the gnarliest.
